The extratempestrial hypothesis (also termed the intertempestrial hypothesis (IHT) or the extra-temporal model) is a framework proposed by Michael P. Masters — professor of biological anthropology at Montana Technological University — which holds that UFO occupants commonly described as grey beings are not extraterrestrial beings from other star systems but are future humans — descendants of Homo sapiens — who have traveled backward in time using advanced time travel technology and revisit their own past. Masters coined the term "extratempestrial" — from Latin extra (outside) and tempus (time) — to parallel "extraterrestrial" and distinguish temporal from interstellar origin. The hypothesis does not exclude the extraterrestrial hypothesis; it proposes that a subset of UAP encounters — specifically those involving Grey-type entities — are best explained by temporal rather than interstellar origin. Because time travel is generally held to entail operating across extra dimensions, the extratempestrial thesis is classed as a subset of the interdimensional hypothesis and is surveyed among the origin models compared in the metatheories of the UFO phenomenon. Independent corroboration is claimed from the testimony of Dan Burisch (legal name Dan Crain), who says he worked directly with a being designated Chi'el'ah — a future-human entity from approximately 52,000 years in the future — at S-4, the classified facility adjacent to Area 51.

Academic formulation

Michael P. Masters holds a faculty position in biological anthropology at Montana Technological University (also reported as Montana State University) and has published extensively on evolutionary anatomy and biomedicine. Masters presented the hypothesis in Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach to the UFO Phenomenon (2019), drawing on anthropology, evolutionary biology, theoretical physics, and UFO encounter literature, and developed it further in his 2023 volume The Extra Temporal Model, which lays out roughly thirty case studies. Hal Puthoff, one of the primary scientific investigators associated with advanced UAP programs, recommended Masters to MUFON after reading his work — one of the few endorsements from within the intelligence-adjacent research community.

Morphological argument

Masters argues that the morphological characteristics consistently reported for grey beings — enlarged cranium, reduced musculature and jaw, large eyes, small mouth, vestigial digestive structures, and frail overall build — map precisely onto what paleoanthropologists and evolutionary biologists would predict for Homo sapiens hundreds of thousands of years in the future: a lineage in which intellectual capacity and technology have progressively displaced physical strength and manual subsistence, while artificial environments have reduced the selective pressure maintaining musculature, jaw size, and gut complexity.

The argument draws on several well-documented evolutionary trends in Homo sapiens: progressive encephalization (growth of the brain case relative to the face), reduction of the dental arcade and jaw musculature as diets soften and food-processing technology improves, progressive loss of body hair, and a general reduction in skeletal muscle mass as technology mediates physical labor. Projected across 45,000 to 60,000 years of additional evolution, these trends would produce a being with a dramatically enlarged cranium, diminutive jaw, minimal muscle, and reduced body hair — matching the iconic Grey silhouette found consistently across abduction case studies, cave art, and popular cultural depictions.

Anatomical convergence: the evolutionary case

The hypothesis draws its scientific coherence from the convergence of multiple independently observed evolutionary trends in Homo sapiens, all measurable within the historical record:

Masters observes that self-domestication — a process where reduced environmental pressure relaxes selection — is already measurable in 21st-century human populations, producing exactly the trends that would compound over millennia.

Behavioral and encounter pattern argument

Masters argues that the behaviors reported in close encounters and abduction accounts — systematic genetic sampling, physical examinations, an apparent interest in reproduction and human biology, and the evident study of human history and culture — are more consistent with a scientific expedition to one's own past than with interstellar exploration. The systematic nature of the sampling, and the specifically biological focus of reported examinations, suggests an anthropological research program oriented toward recovering lost biodiversity or addressing evolutionary bottlenecks. The hypothesis specifically predicts why gamete extraction is so consistently reported: future humans, having undergone centuries of genetic manipulation, declining sperm counts, and reproductive-technology dependency, may require access to genetically intact ancestral gametes.

Masters cites the Rendlesham Forest incident of 1980, in which U.S. Air Force Sergeant Jim Penniston touched a landed craft and later, under hypnotic regression, received and decoded a binary message: "We are you from the future. We are having problems with reproduction and we need this genetic material to help ourselves." He also notes Burisch's testimony as independent corroboration: "you also have the Dan Burisch testimony of this J-Rod, this allegedly captured alien, who said, we're from the future, we are you from the future, and we're from about 55 to 60,000 years in your future."

Motivations for temporal visitation

Masters proposes that far-future humans may travel to the past for three primary reasons: scientific and anthropological study of their own evolutionary history; recovery of genetic diversity lost between the present era and theirs; and correction of, or compensation for, evolutionary bottlenecks or genetic degradation that occurred in the intervening period. The planetary-care imperative noted by abduction researcher John Mack and observed cross-culturally in contactee testimonies also fits the framework without requiring altruistic motivation: future humans whose planet is their only possible origin — they cannot go to another world to replenish their genetic stock — have a purely utilitarian stake in ensuring the biosphere of Earth is not destroyed in the present.

Temporal mechanics and paradox

Masters frames temporal displacement as a more parsimonious solution to the UAP puzzle than interstellar travel. Where interstellar travel requires resolving the light-speed barrier and the vast distances between star systems, backward time travel is at least theoretically permitted by general relativity via manipulation of spacetime geometry — specifically, by orienting spacetime light cones toward the past through high-speed rotation of the craft, combined with relativistic time dilation as the craft accelerates to near-light speed within that rotational field. Masters notes that the characteristic spinning or pulsing motion of disc-shaped UAP is consistent with this mechanism. The practical limit on backward time-travel range — estimated by Penniston under hypnotic regression as 40,000–60,000 years — is thus both a physical constraint and an independent confirmation of the 45,000–52,000-year timestamps reported by Burisch.

On the question of the bootstrap paradox — the apparent logical problem of future humans interacting with ancestors who then go on to create the future from which those travelers came — Masters and the framework generally adopt the block universe interpretation of time, in which past, present, and future are equally real and co-existent, and in which closed causal loops create no logical contradiction. The alternative, the many-worlds interpretation, would allow that time travelers branch off into a new timeline without disturbing their origin, which Burisch's two-timeline framework accommodates differently — the timelines are competing futures, not parallel ones, and which future materializes depends on choices made in the present.

Variable morphology across time periods

Masters acknowledges that reports include a wide variety of humanoid forms, not only the classic small gray. He argues this is consistent with the hypothesis rather than refuting it: beings returning from very different future periods — separated by hundreds of thousands of years of further evolution — would have diverged substantially from one another, just as human populations today differ from those of 100,000 years ago. A muscular, human-appearing being and a small gray seen at the same encounter site could both be temporal visitors from different eras.

Masters also addresses the logistics of sustained research operations: extratempestrial visitors may not need to travel through time for each individual encounter. Instead, they may have established fixed bases — possibly on the far side of the Moon — from which they can conduct ongoing operations without repeatedly transiting through time. The systematic collection of gametic material (sperm and egg) that abduction testimony describes would be operationally easier from a stable base than from a time machine in transit.

Masters is also open about the limits of the hypothesis — he explicitly rejects the label of "the future human guy" and does not claim the extratempestrial framework explains all UAP phenomena, noting that it addresses specifically the gray-humanoid encounters and that other categories of phenomenon may require different explanations.

J-Rod time-travel testimony

Dan Burisch (legal name Dan Crain), a microbiologist who claims a classified career spanning the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Majestic 12 working group, provides the most detailed first-person account of contact with future-human entities. Burisch states that from approximately 1994 onward he worked at the Clean Sphere facility at S-4 with an entity referred to as Chi'el'ah, whom he designates a P+52k entity — a being whose society is located approximately 52,000 years in the human future.

Burisch describes two distinct future-human lineages who return to the present. The P-45s (P+45k, approximately 45,000 years in the future) are associated with Zeta Reticuli and are the entities most commonly encountered in abduction cases. The P-52s (P+52k, approximately 52,000 years in the future), including Chi'el'ah, are from a more evolved society with a service-to-others orientation, having gradually shifted toward greater ethical consciousness over the 7,000 years separating the two groups.

According to Burisch, the split between the two lineages results from a catastrophic event in the near future: the portion of humanity that retreats underground following the catastrophe undergoes tens of thousands of years of subterranean evolution, developing into the J-Rods — with the P-45s representing the earlier, more diminished branch and the P-52s a slightly more developed later branch. The portion of humanity that instead evacuates to the Moon, then Mars, and eventually the Orion star system evolves along a separate trajectory — becoming the beings known as Oriontals or Nordics.

The P-52s had by their time developed entirely telepathic communication, with a specialized neurological organ — analogous to the dolphin's acoustic melon — that allows them to entrain to the emotional and neurological state of present-day humans, facilitating contact and, in the case of the P-45s, abduction compliance. Burisch notes that the P-52 entity Chi'el'ah described present-day humans as his "organic pure form" — an expression of the being's recognition that his own degenerated physiology (including the progressive neuropathy that afflicted him) was a departure from the ancestral baseline he encountered in Burisch himself.

Burisch's specific medical findings at S-4 aligned with the hypothesis: the J-Rod's chromosomal count had been reduced from the human baseline of 46 to 38 (19 pairs) through Robertsonian translocations — a compression of the genome consistent with long-term evolutionary change — and the entity suffered from a complex neuropathy with no human analog. The P-45 entities ranged 0.91–1.07m in height; the P-52s stood 1.07–1.22m and displayed a Cockayne-syndrome-like phenotype with a stooped posture and accelerated cellular aging.

Project Looking Glass and the timeline framework

According to Burisch, central to the framework is Project Looking Glass, a back-engineered Stargate device capable of viewing probable future timelines rather than creating a traversable passage through them. According to Burisch, the Looking Glass device — a barrel, ring, and projection assembly derived from ancient cylinder-seal descriptions — was operated at S-4 beginning in the early 1970s, initially demonstrated by Will Uhouse, who witnessed its earliest field tests; a second Looking Glass unit was required to be operated simultaneously at another site to obtain acoustic output alongside the visual feed.

Burisch claims that within the Looking Glass data, two primary future timelines were discernible — designated Timeline 1 and Timeline 2. Timeline 2, associated with a planetary catastrophe in the early 21st century, would produce the conditions — subterranean human survivors evolving in darkness and low-oxygen environments — that lead to the J-Rod phenotype over 45,000 to 52,000 years. On this view, the hypothesis is not about a singular fixed future but about a contingent one: the J-Rods exist in the timeline where the catastrophe occurred, and they return to the past partly to observe, partly to influence, and partly to harvest genetic material needed to correct the physiological deterioration their subterranean evolutionary path produced. The P-45 "rogues" actively want Timeline 2 to occur, as it justifies the catastrophe that defines their own history; the P-52s oppose the catastrophe and seek to preserve Timeline 1, the branch in which humanity avoids planetary collapse. The Looking Glass devices were subsequently decommissioned under an international treaty framework — the Tau-9 Treaty system — with their three components separated and distributed to different geopolitical authorities to prevent further use.

Relationship to the extraterrestrial hypothesis and other frameworks

The extratempestrial hypothesis does not rule out the existence of genuinely extraterrestrial intelligence elsewhere in the universe, but argues that the specific beings most commonly reported in UFO encounters — grey humanoids with unmistakably hominid anatomy and Earth-specific behavioral patterns — are better explained by temporal origin than by interstellar travel, given that the latter would require independently evolving convergent humanoid morphology across astronomical distances. The hypothesis applies specifically to the Grey phenotype and the behavioral profile — gamete extraction, genetic sampling, apparent interest in human reproduction and ecological status — that would be unintelligible for a truly alien species but is immediately comprehensible for a descendant lineage managing its own biological continuity.

Burisch's P-45/P-52 taxonomy intersects with other testimony-based frameworks. Within Elena Danaan's Galactic Federation of Worlds taxonomy, Zeta Reticulan entities are described as a distinct species; under the extratempestrial reading, the "Zeta Reticulan" designation may reflect the P-45 entities' self-reported residence near that star system, to which they migrated following the catastrophic divergence from the main human timeline. The interdimensional hypothesis is also partially compatible: beings who have evolved over 50,000 years may perceive and interact with reality at a different density or frequency level, and the higher-dimensional consciousness reported in P-52 contact experiences could represent genuine evolution of the perceptual apparatus rather than an alternate origin dimension. The Rendlesham Forest incident, the Betty and Barney Hill abduction, and the broader abduction literature all contain elements — physical humanoid appearance, apparent familiarity with human biology, systematic extraction of reproductive material, and cross-cultural emphasis on Earth's ecological health — that fit more naturally within the extratempestrial framework than within a strict extraterrestrial hypothesis requiring independent alien convergent evolution to a near-human morphology.
