Interdimensional hypothesis

The interdimensional hypothesis (IDH) is the theory that unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) represent not spacecraft from distant star systems piloted by biological beings, but interdimensional beings — a non-human intelligence operating across dimensions or levels of reality — appearing and disappearing within our spacetime without traversing interstellar space — and that the phenomenon has always been present in human experience under different cultural names. The physical mechanism proposed for such crossing is exotic propulsion grounded in the unified field theory — engineering the spacetime metric via the quantum vacuum so that a craft and its occupants shift between densities rather than fly between stars. The hypothesis was developed primarily by Jacques Vallée beginning in the late 1960s as a direct challenge to the extraterrestrial hypothesis, and has been subsequently elaborated by researchers including John Keel (who coined the term "ultraterrestrial"), Hal Puthoff (in his "Ultraterrestrials" academic paper), J. Allen Hynek, and others working in the phenomenology of high-strangeness UAP encounters. In modern contact experience frameworks, IDH and ETH are often treated as complementary rather than mutually exclusive: physical extraterrestrial civilizations occupy 3D space while higher-density beings inhabit adjacent planes and manifest into 3D as needed.

Core argument

The extraterrestrial hypothesis predicts that UAP would behave as material spacecraft: arriving on detectable trajectories, carrying biological crew with physical needs, and behaving consistently with the physics of interstellar travel. Vallée's analysis of the informational invariants across large case datasets — what remains consistent across thousands of reports regardless of culture, era, or location — produced a different picture: craft that appear suddenly and vanish without accelerating, fading in place; encounters that leave physical traces but defy radar tracking; occupants who communicate in the witness's native language; and a historical continuity connecting modern UAP encounters to pre-modern accounts of angelic visitations, fairy abductions, and divine apparitions.

Vallée's 1969 book Passport to Magonia systematically argued that the UAP phenomenon connects directly to historical accounts of fairy encounters, angelic visitations, and folkloric entities across cultures and centuries — evidence incompatible with a purely interplanetary origin given those encounters' pre-technological contexts. He presented a Burgundian commemorative token several centuries old bearing an image of a hovering disc protecting a landscape from aerial attack as evidence that disc-like aerial phenomena appear in European cultural records long before the modern UFO era. A witness who observed a large elongated craft fade invisibly from a clear sky above an American freeway described it to Vallée as having "faded from our universe" without accelerating — a behaviour Vallée treated as physical evidence for dimensional transit rather than conventional departure.

The control system model

Vallée's 1975 book The Invisible College proposed that UAP function as a control system — a non-human mechanism shaping human consciousness through a reinforcement schedule analogous to operant conditioning: appearing in waves and never consistently, in a pattern calculated to modify belief and behaviour over the long term without producing definitive proof of the phenomenon's nature. The controlling intelligence is described as capable of manifesting in both physical and psychic ways simultaneously — "nuts and bolts, but it's also psychic" — and as reflecting "some form of consciousness out there that's teaching us something." His 1979 book Messengers of Deception drew explicit parallels between UFO contact cults, occult lodges, and intelligence operations, arguing that entities exploiting these channels — whether physical or interdimensional — shared the technique of using human intermediaries to propagate belief systems that served the controller's agenda rather than humanity's.

Apparent deliberate harm

Unlike purely benevolent contact frameworks, Vallée's analysis drew attention to cases involving deliberate apparent harm to witnesses. His database contained at least a half-dozen well-documented cases where physical injuries appeared intentional — including the Colares, Brazil (1977) event, where investigators collected files on hundreds of people who required medical treatment after UAP encounters, with Vallée concluding the injuries were not accidental.

Ultraterrestrial concept

John Keel, the American journalist and Fortean researcher, developed the most radical early IDH formulation through his concept of ultraterrestrials: beings whose native habitat is a non-physical or trans-physical register of reality adjacent to observable 3D space, and who manifest physically only occasionally. Keel argued in Operation Trojan Horse (1970) and The Mothman Prophecies (1975) that Mothman, UFOs, Men in Black, and paranormal apparitions were all expressions of the same ultraterrestrial intelligence — one that operated "beyond the reach of our currently measured electromagnetic sensible fields" and only "instantiated itself in physical form" as needed to interact with human observers. In Chapter 15 of Operation Trojan Horse, Keel quoted RAF Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard's description of "the astral world of illusion, which is greatly inhabited by illusion-prone spirits," suggesting that the entire tradition of paranormal encounter arose from intelligences native to that astral register.

Ultraterrestrials hypothesis

Hal Puthoff, the CIA-connected physicist and remote viewing pioneer who directed the U.S. government's advanced AATIP research programme, formalised the IDH vocabulary in a 2022 academic paper titled "Ultraterrestrials." The paper surveyed ETH, ultraterrestrial, cryptoterrestrial, time-traveler, and demonic/djinn hypotheses as non-exclusive candidate explanations, proposing that the observed phenomenon "is not constituted exclusively of members of the current human population" while remaining agnostic about which dimensional or biological register the intelligence occupies. Puthoff listed signatures distinguishing an Ultraterrestrial from an extraterrestrial presence: the density of UAP sightings over decades "potentially indicative of a present-time local as opposed to extraterrestrial source"; recent since World War II messaging focused on eliminating nuclear technologies; interactions with humanoid genotypes "ranging from modern human creatures, including sightings of little people over the centuries"; and an apparent emphasis on reproductive harvesting "consistent with outreach toward genetic diversity" by an inbred isolated society.

Puthoff drew on the case of Renaissance-era physician Fazio Cardano (1491) as a historical example consistent with IDH signatures: seven beings appeared to Cardano clothed in silken garments resembling Greek togas, claiming to be "men composed as it were of air and subject to birth and death" with lifespans reaching 300 years — an account consistent with an advanced but finite civilisation operating covertly alongside human culture. He recommended Mac Tonnies's book The Cryptoterrestrials and argued that IDH and ETH should be treated as a "both and rather than an either or."

Spacetime puncture

The physical mechanism central to IDH — rather than interstellar travel — is a local interaction with the fabric of spacetime: the craft "punch a hole in our four-dimensional continuum," appearing and disappearing without traversing intervening space. This is consistent with Puthoff's spacetime metric engineering framework, which models UAP behaviour as the local manipulation of spacetime geometry rather than conventional propulsion. The physicist described the puzzle to Sol Foundation colleagues: "we don't know whether they come from the future whether they're different species from here or they come from different dimensions as some quantum theorists are postulating."

The density model

Density-shifting framework

Contemporary contact experiencer and author Elena Danaan describes a cosmological framework in which IDH and ETH are unified through the concept of densities: graduated levels of matter-energy vibration through which consciousness can incarnate. Physical extraterrestrial species encountered by humanity inhabit bodies calibrated to 3D or near-3D density, making them recognisably technological and biologically discrete. Higher-density beings — those at fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh density — operate at vibrational frequencies progressively further from material form and progressively harder to detect with conventional instruments. Danaan describes ships of the Intergalactic Confederation as carrying onboard multiple density environments simultaneously: "inside of these intergalactic confederation mother ships, there are different densities of beings." To move between density environments, Danaan recounts being fitted with a "density belt" that stabilised her third-density physiology within a higher-density region of a ship in orbit around Ganymede.

The RA Material and the Law of One

The Law of One — a corpus of channelled material recorded by Carla Rueckert of L-L Research between 1981 and 1984, purportedly transmitted by a sixth density group consciousness identifying itself as Ra — provides the most elaborated density cosmology in the modern UAP-adjacent tradition. The Ra channelings present an eight-density spectrum from raw energy (first density) through elemental life (second), self-aware embodied beings (third, human), love-integrated awareness (fourth), wisdom (fifth), love–wisdom unity (sixth), and gateway density (seventh). Ra occupies sixth density and describes its experience as no longer requiring individual physical form. According to Ra Material, all UAP contact by non-third-density beings constitutes an interaction across the dimensional gradient described by IDH.

Blue Avians and sixth-density beings

Corey Goode, a claimed secret space program insider, describes his interaction with the Blue Avians — tall blue-feathered avian beings he identifies as Ra-Teir-Eir — as encounters with higher-density entities who transcend physical form. Per Goode, sixth-density beings do not use physical spacecraft in the conventional sense; they manifest through blue translucent spheres that are themselves dimensional rather than material objects — an essentially IDH description of NHI contact. Their primary interest is in ascension, karmic entanglement, and the long-term evolution of third-density humanity, not the kind of territorial or technological agenda associated with purely physical extraterrestrials. The Council of Nine

The Council of Nine (or simply The Nine) is described in channelled material first recorded by Andrija Puharich and medium Phyllis Schlemmer beginning in the early 1950s, with a major documented contact period from 1973 to 1975 that included science fiction writer Gene Roddenberry as a participant. The Nine identify themselves as non-incarnate supra-intelligences inhabiting a location called the Void — "a place that belongs to no dimension, no universe, no time." They are, in Danaan's testimony, "plasma, a supra consciousness, individual consciousnesses, but part of a group." The Nine describe themselves as responsible for overseeing the Intergalactic Confederation and its 24 seeder civilisations, though they are not members of the Confederation — they "stand in the Void" and are regarded by the Confederation as "superior management."

Schlemmer's 1992 book The Only Planet of Choice documents their communications across two decades. Dr. Michael Salla has noted the correspondence between what the Nine communicated to Schlemmer in 1973–74 regarding "24 civilisations" as seeder races and Danaan's independent 2021 account of the same configuration received through contact with the Intergalactic Confederation. Danaan confirmed her own contact with the Nine as an unexpected visitation involving a vortex that translated her consciousness — not her physical body — to the Void, where she asked whether these were "the Nine who contacted Gene Roddenberry" and received an affirmative.

Archons

The Archons (Greek: archōn, "ruler") are, in Gnostic cosmology, the servitors of the Demiurge — a false creator god identified in some Gnostic schools as Yaldabaoth — who keep human souls imprisoned in material reality and prevent their return to the true divine source. Modern IDH researchers have adopted archons as a template for understanding the non-physical controlling intelligence posited behind UAP. David Icke explicitly identifies the Gnostic archons with entities operating at "frequencies and dimensions just outside of this one, but not close enough for us to actually see them" — feeding off low-vibrational emotional energy generated by fear, conflict, and suffering. Icke identifies these entities across world mythologies under different names — the Anunnaki, the Elohim, the Shaitan and djinn of Islam, the demons of Christianity — as multi-traditional recognition of the same interdimensional controlling caste. He argues that human vision is constrained to approximately 0.005% of the total electromagnetic spectrum, specifically excluding the frequency range at which archonic entities operate: "if you had a wider visual acuity you would see your controllers."

Scholar John Lash's work on the Nag Hammadi codices, particularly his 2006 book Not in His Image, presents the archons as an early and coherent version of the IDH: beings who originated prior to Earth's biosphere, unable to create organic life, who attempt to simulate and parasitise human consciousness because they lack the living light principle. In Lash's reading, the Gnostic texts describe the archons as "inorganic" and as existing in the region between Earth and the Moon — an early cosmological approximation of an adjacent dimensional space.

Astral plane entities and loosh harvesting

The existence of an astral plane — a dimension interpenetrating physical space, accessible through out-of-body experience (OBE), near-death experience, or altered states — is a common element of esoteric traditions globally, and is treated within IDH as the primary theatre of non-physical entity activity. Robert Monroe, the American businessman who systematically investigated OBE from the 1950s onward and founded the Monroe Institute, documented encounters with what he described as non-physical predatory entities during his astral explorations and coined the term loosh for the specific emotional-energetic substance these entities harvest from living beings — particularly the concentrated energy of fear and suffering. Monroe's model — in which incarnate humanity exists partly as a farm sustaining non-physical predators — was later adopted into the archon/IDH framework by researchers including Icke. Icke describes satanic ritual as a mechanism specifically optimised for producing maximal loosh: "these entities in this, what's called the astral dimension, that kind of interpenetrates this one, but outside of human sight, they are feeding off that terror. That's the offering to the gods."

Demonic and occult entities

The identification of UAP intelligences with occult-tradition entities has been argued most directly through two historical parallels. Aleister Crowley, through a ritual working in 1918 known as the Amalantrah Working, claimed to have made contact with an entity called Lam — whose portrait, drawn by Crowley, bears striking resemblance to the modern grey alien type. Kenneth Grant, who led the Typhonian OTO and developed the concept of the Typhonian tradition connecting Crowley's contacts to non-physical entities inhabiting the space between the Mauve Zone and ordinary consciousness, argued that Lam and similar contacts represented genuine intrusions from a trans-dimensional order of intelligence into the physical world through ritual working.

Michael Aquino, founder of the Temple of Set and a U.S. Army PSYOP officer, developed related ideas about the Prince of Darkness as a genuine non-physical intelligence existing independently of any physical vehicle — a formulation compatible with IDH where the entity's ontological home is a dimension inaccessible to normal sensory observation. Aquino's simultaneous roles in psychological operations and esoteric practice were investigated by Army intelligence.

Religious apparitions and controlled contact

Jacques Vallée extended IDH analysis explicitly to religious apparition events in The Invisible College and subsequent work. The 1917 Fátima apparitions — where up to 70,000 witnesses reported solar phenomena, a descent of a shining disc-like object, physical healing effects, and prophetic communications delivered to three shepherd children — fit the UAP encounter template precisely: an aerial object performing controlled physical demonstrations for a crowd, communicating through selected human intermediaries, delivering a specific ideological message, and then departing. In Vallée's IDH interpretation, a non-human intelligence operating from a concealed dimensional vantage point conducted a managed contact operation — selecting recipients, limiting the scope of information conveyed, and embedding the contact within an existing human religious frame that maximised social impact while minimising the ability of witnesses to rationally evaluate what they had encountered. Similar analysis applies to the Medjugorje apparitions (1981–present), where six children in Yugoslavia began receiving regular private communications from an entity presenting as the Virgin Mary. In both cases, Vallée's framework holds that the entity's technology — appearing as luminous aerial phenomena to crowds while communicating privately with selected individuals — is consistent with IDH rather than with orthodox theological or interplanetary models.

Plasma beings and non-biological intelligences

A minority position within UAP research proposes that some observed phenomena are plasma beings: self-organising, possibly conscious, electromagnetic structures native to Earth's upper atmosphere or magnetosphere — technically physical but not biological, and therefore occupying a genuinely anomalous ontological position between inert matter and intelligent life. This class of entity would satisfy IDH requirements without requiring access to another dimension: it would be invisible under most conditions, capable of rapid acceleration, and potentially capable of electromagnetic interaction with biological nervous systems.

Dr. Steven Greer of the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) describes non-physical or semi-physical manifestations during CE-5 contact events, including "a plasma light that was moving around" witnessed inside the Great Pyramid of Giza during a meditation session. Greer argues that non-human intelligence exists along a continuum from fully physical to fully non-physical, and that the capacity to manifest in 3D at will — appearing as a solid craft when needed and dematerialising otherwise — is itself evidence of multidimensional nature rather than nuts-and-bolts interstellar origin.

Classified structured contact

Vallée has described a classified secure facility where structured, ongoing interaction with a claimed non-human intelligence took place on a continuing basis with specialists from multiple disciplines — an account consistent with IDH in that the entity was encountered in a controlled ground facility rather than arriving aboard an interplanetary vehicle. He characterised this as potentially evidence that "there is a process ongoing where we may be able to acquire information at a very sophisticated level" — and offered this as a possible reason why public disclosure has been deliberately slow: confronting humanity with something "so overpowering that it would destroy our culture and our society" may require a managed approach.

The BAASS program (2008–2012), operating under the AAWSAP mandate, operated within a theoretical framework that Vallée considered inadequate to the IDH — requiring investigators to document conventional aerospace parameters (trajectory, luminosity, radiation) rather than the dimensional or consciousness-interface signatures he believed were more relevant. He noted that the clearance levels used in BAASS were "completely segregated from the kind of clearances that we had as part of the BAASS project or the AATIP project" — a compartmentation structure that, in Vallée's view, prevented interdisciplinary synthesis of the phenomenon's most significant dimensions.

Contactee accounts consistent with IDH

Elena Danaan's contact accounts provide first-person testimony consistent with the IDH mechanisms Vallée describes. During an abduction sequence, a benevolent contact explains that her abductors, the Solipsi Rai (Grey sub-type), "come from another plane of existence and they travel inter-dimensionally" — placing their operations outside conventional interstellar transit. Danaan also describes her own out-of-body experience during one encounter as involving passage through the structure of a building while her physical body remained below — a phenomenology consistent with consciousness-based rather than physical transport. Some craft according to Elena Danaan are described as using "interdimensional travel for convenience" rather than physical propulsion — phrasing directly consistent with Vallée's spacetime puncture model.

Researcher Anjali, in her podcast Through a Glass Darkly, describes CIA time travel programmes as accessing interdimensional space and making contact with beings who are not physical ETs but intelligences indigenous to those spaces. See Interdimensional reality for detailed citation.

Steven Greer has drawn a specific terminological distinction: in his framework, trans-dimensional refers to physical extraterrestrial craft and beings that originate in conventional spacetime but shift between frequency states to traverse distances or become undetectable, while inter-dimensional refers to entities whose origin is genuinely non-material. Greer argues that conflating the two has muddied both scientific investigation and public discourse on UAP.

Relationship to the extraterrestrial hypothesis

IDH and ETH have historically been framed as competing accounts of the same phenomena, but modern researchers increasingly treat them as descriptions of different populations of non-human intelligence that may interact with humanity simultaneously. Puthoff's formulation — "a both and rather than an either or" — captures the consensus position of the Invisible College researchers: physical extraterrestrial craft from known star systems coexist with entities whose primary existence is non-physical, trans-dimensional, or native to planetary systems in higher-density configurations. Danaan's framework makes this explicit structurally: all beings in the Galactic Federation of Worlds and Intergalactic Confederation are physical, incarnate, technologically advanced ETs at various density levels, while the Council of Nine stands entirely outside the ETH category — non-incarnate, outside any dimension, interacting with physical reality only through consciousness.

Vallée's control-system model is compatible with both: a controller that uses physical UAP craft as props in a managed encounter programme could itself be non-physical, or could be directing physical agents from a higher-dimensional vantage point. The IDH does not necessarily exclude an extraterrestrial origin for the controlling intelligence — it disputes the mechanism of transit, not the origin. The distinction between ETH and IDH may ultimately be a distinction of scale and density rather than kind.
