Cryptoterrestrial hypothesis

The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis (CTH) is the proposition that some or all beings commonly characterized as extraterrestrial are in fact cryptoterrestrials native to Earth — remnant advanced civilizations resident in subterranean, undersea, or cloaked habitats who have cohabited with surface humanity while remaining deliberately concealed. The hypothesis is one of several non-ETH frameworks — alongside the interdimensional hypothesis and the intertempestrial hypothesis — surveyed in Hal Puthoff's 2022 "Ultraterrestrials" paper as candidate explanations for unidentified aerial phenomena.

Formulation

The modern CTH was articulated by researcher Mac Tonnies in his posthumously published The Cryptoterrestrials (2010), which argued that the observed characteristics of UAP — high local sighting density, apparent concern with nuclear and environmental policy, genetic outreach through abduction programs — are better explained by an indigenous isolated population than by interstellar visitors. Puthoff extended the framing in academic form, adopting the broader term "ultraterrestrial" to encompass both physically co-resident populations and beings native to adjacent non-physical registers.

Candidate populations

In contemporary contact literature, several populations are proposed as cryptoterrestrial: the Anshar (described by Corey Goode as an Inner Earth humanoid civilization claiming descent from ancient surface humanity), the Nordic inner Earth civilization, the Ant People reported by Indigenous traditions and by witnesses such as Chris O'Connor, and pre-diluvian remnants associated with Atlantis and Lemuria traditions.

Relationship to other hypotheses

The CTH is typically presented as complementary rather than exclusive to ETH and IDH. Jacques Vallée's control-system model and John Keel's ultraterrestrial framework partially overlap with CTH. The intertempestrial hypothesis — that some Greys are evolved future humans — shares CTH's terrestrial-origin commitment but situates the population in time rather than space.
