Area studies and intelligence agencies
Area studies and intelligence agencies refers to the historical and ongoing overlap between U.S. university area-studies programs (Russian/Soviet studies, Middle East studies, East Asian studies, Latin American studies) and U.S. intelligence agencies. Post-World-War-II area-studies programs were substantially built with intelligence-community funding and front organizations (the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation's area-studies program, and the Social Science Research Council).
Historical context
The Cold War created a large civilian pipeline for intelligence-ready regional expertise; area-studies departments became a documented recruiting ground for the CIA, NSA, and State Department. The integration declined but did not end after the Cold War.
