In the ancient astronaut theory, multiple non-human intelligent beings (NHIBs) allegedly acted as gods over ancient human civilizations — receiving worship, issuing commandments, demanding sacrifice, and holding literal political dominion over human populations and territories. The framework holds that the gods of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Hebrew Bible, and other traditions were not supernatural beings but extraterrestrial visitors whose technological superiority was interpreted as divinity by their human subjects. The thesis was popularized by Erich von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods? (1968).

Sumerian Anunnaki as historical rulers

Zecharia Sitchin, drawing on Sumerian cuneiform texts, argued that the Anunnaki — the gods of the Sumerian pantheon — were an extraterrestrial civilization from the planet Nibiru who arrived on Earth approximately 450,000 years ago. In Sitchin's reading, the Sumerian gods Anu, Enlil, and Enki were historical persons: rulers, scientists, and commanders who held real administrative dominion over Mesopotamian city-states, each city assigned to a particular god's jurisdiction. Sitchin described the Anunnaki as having been encountered in multiple forms — living beings, androids, and eventually as remote symbolic presences as the civilization withdrew — and noted that ancient depictions of beings with large oval heads and prominent eyes closely resemble modern descriptions of gray entities.

Anunnaki dominion

In the exopolitics synthesis, the Anunnaki exercised dominion over multiple civilizations simultaneously, operating as a multi-territorial empire on Earth. Enlil held military command over the solar fleet and the colonies; Enki oversaw genetic engineering and relations with humanity. Individual city-states were allocated to specific Anunnaki lords as their domains; the gods of Egypt, Babylon, and Sumer are interpreted as the same small group of Anunnaki appearing under different names across cultures. This multi-civilization dominion is discussed in the broader context of the NHIB dominion on Earth concept.

Biblical alien gods

The Hebrew Bible's Elohim — translated "God" but grammatically plural in Hebrew — is reinterpreted in this framework as a reference to the Anunnaki or related NHIBs. Ella LeBain, interviewed by Michael Salla on Exopolitics Today, argued that many biblical figures designated as divine beings, including those associated with the Gog and Magog prophecy, were physical extraterrestrial entities whose encounters with humans were recorded in scriptural terms.
