Art Bell

Art Bell (1945–2018) was an American radio broadcaster and the founder and long-running host of Coast to Coast AM, a late-night AM radio talk show covering UFOs, paranormal phenomena, conspiracy theories, and fringe science. Broadcasting from "the high desert in the great American Southwest," Bell built Coast to Coast AM into a widely heard overnight program reaching listeners across North America and abroad, and created the cultural template for alternative overnight radio. He also hosted Dreamland, a weekend paranormal spinoff, and the SiriusXM show Dark Matter with Art Bell (2013–2015).

Career

Bell's radio programs became a major venue for UFO disclosure research and paranormal testimony. On Coast to Coast AM and Dreamland, he interviewed key figures including Travis Walton, Mike Rogers, John Rhodes, and Steven Greer. The 1995 Dreamland interview with Travis Walton and Mike Rogers about the 1975 Snowflake incident was among his most discussed programs; Bell guided both witnesses through the sequence of events, examining how the crew first saw what Walton described as "a golden color rather than a red color" object hovering above the tree line on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Walton described the object as "a very distinct mechanical object with hard angular edges" about 20 feet above the ground, and Bell drew out the detail that Rogers witnessed Walton being "blown backwards literally" — an intensity he argued the film Fire in the Sky had under-dramatized.

On Dreamland, Bell also hosted researcher John Rhodes, who presented the thesis that humanity shares genetic descent from an ancient bipedal reptilian race and that underground bases potentially concealed non-human inhabitants — topics Bell engaged with directly, noting that the HAARP project was said to include a mandate to "map underground tunnels and caves." Rhodes described visits to cave systems near Las Vegas that he believed to be Reptilian outposts, and argued that tunneling technology patented by Los Alamos Laboratories — thermal nuclear boring machines — made subterranean civilizations physically plausible.

Jonathan Reed case

In late 1998, Bell received a fax from Robert Raith describing a claimant — Jonathan Reed — who asserted he had filmed an extraterrestrial being and its craft in the forests of Washington state. Bell read the fax on air and brought Raith on as a live caller the same night. The fax described "films of an extraterrestrial and its craft taken with video and 35 millimeter cameras" and characterized the materials as making "the Alien Autopsy and Victor's film look sparse in comparison." Raith told Bell the craft resembled "a marquise diamond" — a "large black thing we call the obelisk" — and that photographic and video evidence was "very, very clear. You can't mistake what you're looking at for anything other than it is." Raith described Reed as a psychologist who had been hiking in the Washington state forest with his dog when the dog was killed by the being, which Reed struck with a large stick and transported home; the house was subsequently "cleaned out" by unidentified individuals. Raith also stated that audio recordings of the being screaming had been captured. Bell described the account as "pretty exciting" and arranged to receive photographic evidence by overnight mail, with a planned broadcast interview with Reed set for the following week. Bell subsequently broadcast several interviews with Reed and Raith between 1998 and 2001, making Coast to Coast AM the primary public venue for the Jonathan Reed case. Reed and Raith had waited to bring the story to Bell specifically, having planned to approach him before Bell's earlier temporary departure from the air: "we were actually ready to go forward just after you announced that you were leaving the air and we waited hoping and praying that you would come back on because we really wanted to give this story to you."

Dark Matter on SiriusXM

Bell returned to broadcasting in 2013 with Dark Matter, carried exclusively on SiriusXM channel 104, described by Bell as a "bad language free zone" with three and a half hours of content per broadcast after commercials were removed. An early program featured Steven Greer, whom Bell introduced as "father of the disclosure movement" and founder of the Disclosure Project, the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and The Orion Project. During that interview, Greer described his 1993 meeting with CIA Director Woolsey, who told him — after a nearly three-hour briefing — "how do we disclose that which we have no operational control over? We don't have access to this material," a moment Bell called "chilling." Bell engaged Greer on the claim that senior officials including Gordon Cooper and John Callahan of the FAA had provided government documentation of UAP encounters — telling Greer that Cooper had personally recounted the Edwards Air Force Base 1956 UAP landing to him on an earlier broadcast.

Jonathan Reed on Dark Matter

On September 18, 2013, Bell reunited with Jonathan Reed on Dark Matter, bringing him to a new SiriusXM audience seventeen years after the 1996 forest incident. Reed retold the full account of the encounter, presented photographs on Bell's website, and three additional witnesses called in. Reed also described subsequent years of contact with Freddie and a claimed teleportation experience via the Link bracelet to a large oval chamber where a ten-to-fifteen-foot golden entity communicated with him telepathically. Bell summarized the episode to listeners: "Believe it, not believe it. Think it's a hoax, think it's gospel, whatever. It's a hell of a story."

Interview with Joe Rogan

Bell conducted an interview with comedian and media personality Joe Rogan for the UFO: WHISTLEBLOWER! podcast, released under the title "EXCLUSIVE – Art Bell Interview with Joe Rogan – Media Icons." Rogan, himself a major podcast host with a long-running interest in UAP and conspiracy theories, discussed the territory Bell pioneered with overnight alternative radio.
