Trance Formation of America: True Life Story of a CIA Mind Control Slave is a 1995 self-published book by Cathy O'Brien and Mark Phillips, in which O'Brien describes alleged childhood sexual abuse by her father, induction into a CIA-linked trauma-based mind control program she identifies as Project Monarch, and decades of subsequent forced participation as a courier and sexual slave for senior U.S. and foreign political figures. O'Brien states that her recovery from the program was facilitated by Phillips, an alleged intelligence-community insider who became her co-author and partner.

Publication

Trance Formation of America was issued by O'Brien and Phillips's own imprint, Reality Marketing, Incorporated, in 1995, after O'Brien's earlier attempts to obtain redress through official channels reportedly went unaddressed. The book has remained continuously in print through reprintings by the same publisher, with no major-press edition. A companion title, Access Denied: For Reasons of National Security (2004), revisits much of the same material with additional document reproductions.

The book is structured as O'Brien's first-person narrative interleaved with Phillips's commentary on the alleged programming techniques and intelligence-community context. O'Brien describes systematic abuse beginning before age five — including ritualistic abuse incidents which she says were used to fracture her personality into independent alters — followed by induction into what the book identifies as Project Monarch, the trauma-based mind-control program said to derive from Operation Paperclip research imported from Nazi Germany. O'Brien describes how each personality fragment was allegedly programmed for a specific operational function: courier, sexual operative, or political asset. The "Presidential Model" of programming, as O'Brien and Phillips describe it, was designed to produce a compartmentalized individual able to interact with heads of state without conscious awareness of those transactions.

The book names a long list of senior U.S. and foreign officials whom O'Brien states sexually abused or otherwise exploited her in this capacity, and recounts memories — recovered through what O'Brien describes as deprogramming work with Phillips — of being used as a courier in operations connected to the Iran–Contra affair and to drug trafficking by senior intelligence personnel. The book also describes ritual-abuse imagery — including a baptism-like ceremony in which O'Brien states she was doused with blood as a young child — which has subsequently been cited by other survivor researchers as a recurrent feature of trauma-based programming accounts.

Reception

Trance Formation of America has not received mainstream press review. Within scholarly literature on conspiracy theory and contested-memory research, the book has been characterized as "sensational even by the standards of conspiracy literature," with mainstream scholars holding that "no credible evidence" supports O'Brien's central claims and that her narrative contains "numerous inconsistencies." The book has nonetheless been credited with originating one of the most widely circulated mind control conspiracy narratives in American popular culture, propagating through alternative-radio interviews, conferences, and self-published reprintings throughout the late 1990s and into the 2010s.

Within the exopolitics and secret space program research community, by contrast, Trance Formation of America is treated as a foundational first-person source on the operational mechanics of Project Monarch. Laura Eisenhower has cited O'Brien as a representative example of a survivor who broke through her programming and recovered functional autonomy, presenting her recovery as evidence that survivors of trauma-based programming should be taken seriously rather than dismissed as fabricators or as suffering from false memory syndrome. Comedian and podcast host Kurt Metzger has stated on The Joe Rogan Experience that he revisited the book in retrospect and found that O'Brien's accounts of Iran-Contra and CIA-linked drug trafficking "correlate" with subsequent documented revelations about senior intelligence officials.
