Angels and demons as aliens

Angels and demons as aliens is the proposition that the angels and demons of religious tradition were not supernatural spirits but real extraterrestrial, interdimensional, or other non-human intelligent beings — that scripture and folklore preserve, in religious language, an actual record of contact with visiting beings. It is the reinterpretive counterpart of aliens as angels and demons: where that framing emphasises how religious cultures received and named the visitors, this one re-reads the surviving accounts — the Watchers and Nephilim of the Book of Enoch, the angelic messengers and "sons of God" of scripture — as history. Barry Downing argued in The Bible and Flying Saucers (1968) that the angels of the Bible were extraterrestrial visitors and that episodes such as the Exodus pillar of cloud and fire and Ezekiel's wheel describe craft; Erich von Däniken similarly re-read angelic and demonic figures as ancient astronauts, while Jacques Vallée treated the entities of religion, folklore, and the UFO phenomenon as one continuous reality appearing under different names. No mainstream verification exists.
