Harald Malmgren

Harald Malmgren (1935–2025) was an American economist and presidential advisor who served as a senior aide to four presidents — JFK, LBJ, Nixon, and Ford — and who, shortly before his death, publicly claimed to have directly handled physical debris recovered from an unidentified flying object that fell from the plume of a 1962 Marshall Islands nuclear test. He also described private briefings on extraterrestrial technology from CIA Deputy Director of Plans Richard Bissell, and discussed his awareness of the Majestic-12 governance structure for the UFO issue.

Background

Malmgren was born in the middle of the Great Depression to Swedish immigrant parents in Rhode Island, near Narragansett Bay. At thirteen he was discovered by Karl Compton, then president of MIT, while helping his father restore a mansion in Newport; Compton offered him a full scholarship through graduate school on the spot, which Malmgren initially declined. He subsequently studied at Yale and Oxford, earning a doctorate under Nobel laureate John Hicks, and went on to advise trade economists including Tom Schelling.

At age 27, as an aide to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Malmgren was deployed to the Cuban Missile Crisis situation room in October 1962. He is credited with slowing down Curtis LeMay's push for immediate strikes on the Soviet Union by pressing the generals on what their first target would be, causing LeMay to storm out when the logic of hitting Moscow was refuted.

UFO material handling — the Bluegill Triple Prime test

In October 1962, simultaneous with the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Atomic Energy Commission conducted the Bluegill Triple Prime high-altitude nuclear test in the Marshall Islands under Operation Dominic. Malmgren, then tasked with assessing missile costs and performance data, was sent to Los Alamos approximately two weeks before President Kennedy and his team visited the site.

At Los Alamos, Malmgren was briefed by Lawrence Keys of the Albuquerque division of the Atomic Energy Commission, who told him the test had produced an anomalous result: a device — which the report called a "tag alarm" — had appeared to knock down alongside the incoming missile as it reacted to the X-ray blast. Naval Intelligence had recovered what fell. When Malmgren pressed for details, he was told the recovery data was controlled by Naval Intelligence and he did not have access to it, despite holding presidential-level clearances for all nuclear weapons programs.

Keys then placed physical debris on his desk, described as round anomalous material — recovered from the nuclear plume. Malmgren handled the material directly. Jesse Michels, in a subsequent interview with James Fox, summarized the significance of the Bluegill Triple Prime test: "when you leave the protective magnetosphere of the Earth" the test "cut a hole in the magnetosphere" and "guess what came out — UFO material," and that Malmgren "was holding the pieces." Keys told him this was not the first case of such objects, that there was a history, and that the Navy would likely have scrubbed the video documentation.

Before his death, Malmgren told his daughter Pippa Malmgren that the entire Bluegill test was an attempt to shoot down a UAP using directed energy, and that the concept of using a nuclear electromagnetic pulse to destabilize a UFO had originated with an extraterrestrial being who survived the 1947 Roswell crash. Michels relayed this detail in his discussion with Fox: "the alien gave them the idea to do Bluegill Triple Prime and have this specialized x-ray system that would not only be used as missile defense but be used to take out UFO material out of the sky to be reverse engineered."

Richard Bissell briefing

Some months after the Bluegill test episode, Malmgren received a series of Friday afternoon briefings from Richard Bissell, then CIA Deputy Director of Plans and the architect of Area 51. Bissell briefed Malmgren extensively not only on UFOs but on the global scope of CIA operations. He described unidentified craft as presenting forces beyond CIA knowledge or control that interfered with CIA interactions with private industry, particularly Lockheed, and as showing up not only around nuclear tests but around a wide range of advanced technology development.

Bissell also confirmed to Malmgren the existence of the 1933 Magenta UFO crash in Italy — a case later publicly raised by David Grusch in 2023.

Majestic-12 awareness and broader intelligence connections

Malmgren implied — through his connection to the network of scientists and officials who briefed him from an early age, including contacts at MIT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Atomic Energy Commission — that he had been tracked by the governance structure known as Majestic-12 from a young age. He linked Karl Compton — who had recruited him as a teenager — to a special flying saucer committee operating at the highest government level in the late 1940s and early 1950s, noting that the FBI destroyed Compton's files in 2006.

In a separate episode of American Alchemy focused on Henry Kissinger and UFO secrecy, Michels traced the chain of custody for the Bluegill debris, noting that the anomalous material recovered from the plume was sent to the Albuquerque Operations Office under Lawrence Preston Geiss — Jeff Bezos's maternal grandfather — who also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. Michels stated that "according to Malmgren, Geiss was directly involved in reverse engineering recovered craft in this exact period."

A close Washington friend, attorney Tom Farmer, who had been general counsel of the CIA and involved in Operation Paperclip, later confirmed to Malmgren his awareness of the broader intelligence network surrounding recovered technology. Malmgren stated his view that JFK's assassination was probably related to the UFO issue, calling it probably the number one issue.

He also claimed to have independently uncovered a collaboration between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Townsend Brown through intelligence sources, and stated his belief that advanced technology at Department of Energy sites continues to be developed under classified programs.

Later life and death

Malmgren gave his disclosure interview to journalist Jesse Michels for the American Alchemy podcast in April 2025. One day after filming, he was hospitalized. He continued to communicate with Michels by phone from hospital, making further disclosures in what Michels describes as a final interview, three days before his death. His daughter Pippa Malmgren, a former special assistant to President George W. Bush on his National Economic Council, participated in the interview and later confirmed additional details Harald had shared on his deathbed.
