Roger Kean Leir (1934–2014) was an American podiatric surgeon and alien abduction researcher based in Thousand Oaks, California, best known for performing approximately seventeen surgical removals of alleged alien implants from self-reported abductees beginning in the 1990s. The extracted objects shared a cluster of anomalous physical properties — no surrounding fibrous rejection capsule, direct neural interfacing, radio-frequency emission, and isotope ratios inconsistent with terrestrial manufacture — that Leir argued placed them beyond the range of conventional foreign-body explanations. He was medical director of A&S Research, a nonprofit organization established to investigate implant cases scientifically, and collaborated with UFO investigator Derrel Sims on case selection. Leir died in March 2014.
Surgical methodology
Leir's protocol for implant assessment required radiological confirmation (X-ray or MRI) of a sub-surface foreign body before any surgical intervention was proposed. Pre-surgical examination consistently failed to identify a portal of entry — no scar, incision, or skin disruption was found at the implant location despite the presence of an object clearly visible on imaging. Leir described one such case: "We took a physical examination of his hand arm. We looked for the telltale marks of the portal of entry. We didn't see any. There was no scar. It had to enter somewhere."
Surgical removals were conducted under general anaesthesia with full medical team support and pathology protocols. Post-removal analysis of specimens used scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy at independent and university laboratories. In one televised case (a patient identified as "Paul" who discovered an object following an X-ray of an injured hand), the extracted specimen resisted mechanical crushing and could not be matched by X-ray diffraction to any of the 65,000 substances in the University of Texas at San Antonio's reference database — the laboratory report noting the specimen did not conform to any known naturally or artificially produced material.
Neural interfacing
A consistent anomaly across Leir's surgical cases was the relationship between the implanted object and the surrounding neural tissue. Rather than the standard foreign-body response — a fibrous rejection capsule isolating the object from immune surveillance — Leir's extracted specimens were found ensheathed by peripheral nerve fibers in a configuration suggesting deliberate connection rather than encapsulation. Leir stated: "The nerves that they were attached to seem to indicate that there was a procedure done that allows whoever did this to monitor that person's biological functions and even to control them." This finding — a biological wrapper interfacing directly with the host's nervous system rather than being isolated from it — was regarded by Leir as the most diagnostically significant feature of the objects.
Collaboration with Derrel Sims
Leir's principal research collaborator was Derrel Sims, a former CIA operative and hypnotherapist who specialised in abduction case investigation. Sims developed a pre-surgical screening protocol using ultraviolet light, which revealed fluorescent marks on subjects' skin at sites corresponding to reported insertion wounds — marks invisible under standard lighting. Together Sims and Leir documented hundreds of implant claims, with Sims handling investigation and case selection while Leir performed surgical analysis and removal.
Endorsement of Ganesh particle research
In 2008 Leir attended a lecture by Dan Burisch at the Beckman Institute at Caltech and publicly endorsed Burisch's claims regarding the Ganesh particle: "I was extremely impressed with his knowledge and the presentation that he gave in relation to a particle release called the Ganesha Particle. I thought he was very articulate and with the slide presentations showed material that certainly was scientifically new." Leir further stated that if Burisch's experimentation were carried to its intended conclusion, "it's going to revolutionize the theory of life on planets in our solar system and perhaps other solar systems in the universe."
Death and legacy
Leir died in March 2014. At the time of his death, Stargate Productions was working with Leir on a documentary titled The Incident at Varginha, Brazil — described as "the Brazilian Roswell" — which incorporated footage from John Mack's estate in which Mack personally interviewed the two primary witnesses to the Varginha incident on January 13, 1996. His cases remain among the most forensically documented in the alien implant literature.
