The Aquarius Teletype is an alleged Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) message that came into the possession of researcher William Moore and entered the Majestic documents corpus chiefly for a single off-hand line referring to "MJ-TWELVE." Its overt subject is the Project Aquarius effort, the researcher Paul Bennewitz, and a film discussed within the message; the MJ-12 reference is incidental to that content. Distinct from the Eisenhower Briefing Document and the Cutler-Twining memo in both source and form, the teletype reached researchers as a retyped copy rather than an original, a circumstance that became central to disputes over its reliability.
Provenance dispute
The teletype is one of the four core papers — alongside the Eisenhower Briefing Document, its appended Truman memorandum and the Cutler-Twining memo — that Kevin D. Randle reviewed in concluding the MJ-12 record to be a fabrication. Randle reports that the original AFOSI teletype has since been located and does not match the MJ-12-referencing copy that was circulated to UFO researchers, with the discrepancy attributed to Moore himself, who at the time was working both sides of the Bennewitz affair. Because only the altered retype carries the "MJ-TWELVE" line, the teletype is generally weighed as the weakest of the early documentary anchors for the committee's existence.
