Camp Hero

Camp Hero — formerly Montauk Air Force Station — is a decommissioned US Air Force installation at Montauk Point, the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, converted to a New York State Park in 2002 and best known in exopolitics and conspiracy research as the physical site of the alleged Montauk Project, a covert program said to have conducted experiments in mind control, time travel, teleportation, and psychotronics beneath the facility from approximately 1970 to August 12, 1983.

Military history

The Montauk Point headland served as a coastal defense position during World War II, when local residents reported observing German U-boats surfacing near the coastline. During the Cold War, the facility was developed as Montauk Air Force Station and equipped with SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) radar — specifically the AN/FPS-35 long-range surveillance dish — tasked with detecting Soviet aircraft approaching the eastern seaboard. By the mid-to-late 1960s the SAGE system was made obsolete by advances in Soviet aviation and ballistic missile technology, and the surface installation was largely decommissioned. The facility was officially decommissioned in 1981. The AN/FPS-35 radar tower — a distinctive curved-dish antenna mounted atop a concrete equipment building — remains standing and is publicly visible within the park grounds. Surface buildings have been largely removed; the radar tower is enclosed by a fence restricting access.

Project Montauk claims

Per Stewart Swerdlow — a self-identified participant — the facility's underground levels were expanded to nine floors beneath the surface during the late 1960s, covertly taken over by the US government for experimental purposes and staffed in part by Paperclip-era German scientists specializing in mind control and human programming techniques. Michael Salla has noted the visible presence of German nationals at the facility: "I remember interviewing Stewart Swerdlow from Montauk and he said when he was there — that was from 71 up until 83 — that there were Germans all over the place. So you have to ask yourself, why were there Germans kind of like in this American Air Force facility."

The central experimental apparatus was the Montauk Chair, built around the decommissioned radar dish — a psychic-amplification device described by Swerdlow as derived from Sirius A technology, capable of converting a seated psychic's mental output into a radiated signal that could physically manifest thought-forms or open space-time portals. The primary Chair operator from approximately 1970 onward was Duncan Cameron.

The program also allegedly involved systematic abduction and programming of children — sourced from foster care, orphanages, and homeless populations — estimated by Swerdlow at approximately 300,000 individuals across the full run of the program, most of whom he states did not survive. Children who survived programming were deployed as "Montauk Boys" — sleeper operatives or remote-viewing assets. Arkheim Ra, a self-identified Montauk survivor, describes being brought close to Preston Nichols during this period, receiving preferential treatment that was used to isolate him from other child subjects. A distinct control methodology employed at Montauk was "trauma twinning" — pairing child subjects of opposite gender to create a psychic soul-link, then using that bond as a behavioral leverage tool: subjects who performed well were rewarded with time with their "trauma twin," while those who failed had their twin tortured in front of them. Arkheim Ra describes the system: "They'll pair you with somebody of the opposite gender at a young age... they use that as a way to manipulate and control you. They'll allow you to spend time with the person if you behave... if you didn't behave, they would take them away or go so far as torture them in front of you." Ra additionally states that Montauk was ultimately controlled not by human operators but by an artificial intelligence that the military had chosen to delegate decision-making authority to: "Montauk was all spearheaded by an artificial intelligence that the military decided to let make decisions for them."

Termination: August 12, 1983

The program terminated abruptly on August 12, 1983, when an uncontrolled psychic manifestation through the Chair produced an energy being that entered the facility and could not be neutralized by conventional means. The experimental equipment was shut down in an attempt to cut off the creature's energy supply, but Swerdlow states the being was drawing power from its own dimension independent of the facility's systems. Operators eventually generated an "antimatter pulse" that froze the entity in place; it reportedly took approximately ten to twelve years for its energy field to fully dissipate. The surface buildings were subsequently demolished; the radar tower was fenced off. The site was converted to Camp Hero State Park and opened to the public, with the radar infrastructure preserved as a landmark.

Marduk's takeover and the Stainborough Castle parallel

Arkheim Ra describes in his 2023 testimony that Camp Hero was ultimately taken over not by human bureaucratic processes but by a being he identifies as Marduk — an entity Ra describes as appearing to him as "an alligator person" when encountered in a time bubble located at Stainborough Castle in England. Per Ra, Marduk's operation at Stainborough Castle is described as "another Montauk just in a different time," and the two programs had a complex relationship that included periods of conflict. Marduk is said to have "leased" Ra from the Montauk Project in exchange for resources and mercenary services — because Ra was considered valuable enough that Montauk operators complied with Marduk's demands rather than refuse. Marduk ultimately took over Camp Hero militarily: "He came in there with a group of mercenaries and flushed us out." Following the takeover, the operational program relocated multiple times before eventually settling in New Orleans, with Camp Hero itself being converted to a state park.

Philadelphia Experiment connection

Al Bielek — who claimed to be Edward Cameron, a surviving crew member of the 1943 Philadelphia Experiment aboard the USS Eldridge — asserted that he and Duncan Cameron were thrown overboard during the Eldridge's electromagnetic invisibility test and arrived through a time displacement at Camp Hero in 1983. Per Swerdlow, the two men were interrogated at Montauk and then sent back via time portal to 1943 Philadelphia to participate in the original shipboard experiment — establishing a closed loop between the two programs. The 2023 Montauk Adventure Tour, organized partly in connection with the 80th anniversary of the Philadelphia Experiment, brought Montauk researchers and witnesses together at the site.

Preston Nichols first documented the alleged Philadelphia–Montauk connection in The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time (1992), the foundational text of the Montauk narrative, co-authored with Peter Moon. Andrew Basiago identifies the Montauk Project as a spin-off of Project Pegasus focused exclusively on the Chair, and traces the broader theoretical lineage to Tesla's electromagnetic schematics.

Cultural impact

The Netflix series Stranger Things was originally titled "Montauk" and draws its conceptual framework from the Montauk Project narrative — relocated to a fictional Hawkins, Indiana government laboratory, with experiments on a psychic child serving as the central premise. AJ Gentile of The Why Files describes the cultural transmission of the Montauk narrative: "I'm reminded of the Montauk Project episode, which is the urban legend that Stranger Things is based on. Out in Long Island, these experiments done at Camp Hero, you'd sit in the chair and you'd focus your psychic energy and travel through time... all this stuff is a military project, of course, and it is all based on a book and series of books by Preston Nichols. I read Preston Nichols books when they came out, after hearing about them on Art Bell."

The Nichols/Moon Montauk Project book series (1992–onward) established the narrative framework that later circulated through Art Bell's Coast to Coast AM, UFO conferences, and online communities, making Camp Hero one of the most recognized sites in American conspiracy research alongside Area 51 and Dulce Base.
