John Podesta

John David Podesta Jr. (born January 8, 1949) is an American political consultant who served as White House Chief of Staff under President Bill Clinton (1998–2001), Counselor to the President under Barack Obama (2014–2015), chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, and Senior Advisor to the President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation (2022–2025) and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (2024–2025) under Joe Biden. He is widely regarded as the most prominent mainstream political figure to have consistently and publicly advocated for UAP disclosure over more than two decades, having described his failure to achieve UFO file declassification as his "biggest regret" from the Clinton years.

Early life and education

Podesta was born on January 8, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois, to Mary (née Kokoris), of Greek-American descent, and John David Podesta Sr., of Italian-American descent. His older brother is the lobbyist Tony Podesta, co-founder of Podesta Associates. He attended Lane Tech College Prep High School (graduating 1967), received a BA from Knox College in 1971, and earned a JD from Georgetown University Law Center in 1976.

Early career

Podesta met Bill Clinton in 1970 while both were working on a Democratic political campaign in Connecticut. His political career began in 1972 with George McGovern's presidential campaign, and he worked through the 1980s as a congressional staffer, including for Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary and as Counselor for Technology to Tom Daschle.

Background and Clinton administration

Podesta first joined the Clinton White House as Senior Policy Adviser. He served as White House Staff Secretary (January 1993 – June 1995), White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (January 1997 – October 1998), and White House Chief of Staff (October 1998 – January 2001). He was reportedly the first White House staffer to receive notice of the Lewinsky scandal and managed the administration's crisis response. Following the Clinton administration he founded the Center for American Progress (CAP) in 2003, serving as its president and CEO until 2011, and currently as chair and counsellor.

Rockefeller Initiative involvement

During the Clinton administration, Podesta was directly involved in responding to the Rockefeller Initiative, the private campaign by philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller to pressure the White House into declassifying UFO files. Filmmaker James Fox, who spoke directly to Podesta about the events, described Rockefeller's leverage: Rockefeller threatened to expose the administration's inaction on the issue publicly if Clinton refused to investigate. The administration's response was to focus on the Roswell case, which ultimately produced the Air Force's "Roswell Case Closed" report attributing the debris to Project Mogul — a conclusion Podesta himself acknowledged was unsatisfying.

2002 National Press Club speech

In October 2002, Podesta delivered a significant speech at the National Press Club alongside Leslie Kean and other researchers, becoming the first senior former White House official to publicly call for declassification of government UFO records. He stated that "it is time for the government to declassify records that are more than 25 years old," and explicitly urged Congress and the executive branch to release relevant classified files. The speech is cited as a watershed moment in mainstream UAP disclosure advocacy.

Obama administration

Podesta co-chaired Obama's 2008–09 presidential transition team and returned to the White House as Counselor to the President from January 2014 to February 2015, focused on climate-change policy, executive action, and the Affordable Care Act rollout.

Podesta emails

Podesta chaired Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. On October 7, 2016, WikiLeaks began publishing thousands of emails from his Gmail account. The cybersecurity firm Secureworks attributed the hack to "Fancy Bear," a Russian hacking group, with the breach traced to a phishing attack against Podesta's account; the U.S. Intelligence Community formally accused Russian intelligence of involvement, and Podesta himself attributed the leak to "Russian intelligence officials attempting to influence the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump." Neither Podesta nor the Clinton campaign formally confirmed the emails' authenticity.

WikiLeaks emails and the Tom DeLonge connection

The October 2016 WikiLeaks release of Podesta's email archive revealed that he had been in regular contact with Tom DeLonge, the Blink-182 co-founder then assembling the To the Stars Academy with a team of former senior intelligence and defense officials. DeLonge confirmed in a 2017 interview that before the WikiLeaks release became public he had been conducting video conferences and calls with Podesta, who at the time was serving as a senior adviser in the Obama administration. The exposure of these communications forced DeLonge to acknowledge the depth of his government contacts earlier than planned.

The same WikiLeaks dump contained an email from Edgar Mitchell — the Apollo 14 astronaut and prominent UFO researcher — addressed to Podesta, urging disclosure of information about zero-point energy and extraterrestrial contact before the end of the Obama administration.

2014 tweet and Biden climate role

In February 2014, Podesta famously posted on Twitter upon leaving his White House Counselor position under Obama: "Finally, my biggest failure of 2014: Once again not securing the #disclosure of the UFO files." In April 2023 (effective September 2, 2022), President Joe Biden appointed Podesta as Senior Advisor to the President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation under the Inflation Reduction Act — overseeing administration of an estimated $370 billion in clean-energy tax credits — a role he held through January 2025. In 2024 he was promoted to U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, succeeding John Kerry. The White House Office of Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation was abolished by President Donald Trump via executive order on January 20, 2025.

Other positions and personal life

Podesta has been a visiting professor at Georgetown University Law Center, teaching congressional investigations, law and technology, legislation, and copyright law. He has served on the boards of Joule Unlimited (an energy company), Equilibrium Capital, and the steering committee of the China–United States Exchange Foundation. He is married to attorney Mary Podesta; the couple have three children including daughter Megan Rouse. Podesta is a Roman Catholic and has worked with Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good.
