Aurora is an alleged classified USAF hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft reportedly developed at Area 51 (Groom Lake) as a successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, operating at speeds estimated between Mach 6 and Mach 16 and altitudes of 180,000 to 200,000 feet. Aviation researcher and Lockheed Skunk Works specialist James Goodall — who has spoken to multiple personnel who heard the craft's distinctive pulse-detonation engine exhaust — identifies Aurora as a real, operational platform that has been active at least since the early 1990s.
Program description
According to Goodall, Aurora is reportedly fuelled by liquid methane — a cryogenic fuel incompatible with standard aviation tankers — requiring a dedicated, specially cleared air-refuelling operation using modified KC-135 or KC-10 tanker aircraft. According to Goodall's reconstruction from multiple sources, the operational profile involves taking off from Area 51 aboard an SR-75 carrier aircraft, launching at altitude, overflying denied territory, landing at Diego Garcia for in-flight refuelling, then returning to Area 51 — with Mach 12+ transit speeds generating distinctive double sonic booms that were widely reported over California in the early 1990s.
Goodall believes Aurora's primary mission is tracking the movement of fissile materials from the former Soviet Union and its successor states, with overflight clearances negotiated with both Russia and Persian Gulf nations.
Evidence and witnesses
The existence of Aurora has never been officially confirmed. James Goodall identifies at least three corroborating witnesses who independently described hearing the pulse-detonation acoustic signature: himself, aviation journalist John Andrews, and an individual named only as "Bob." Questions about Aurora have also been posed to a subsequent Skunk Works president, who told Goodall he had no knowledge of Aurora but could not exclude the possibility that it was a compartmented programme predating his tenure.
Gary McKinnon, who accessed U.S. military computer networks in 2001–2002, did not find explicit Aurora references but did discover a spreadsheet on a U.S. Navy network labelled "Non Terrestrial Officers" listing ship names, ranks, and material transfer records — evidence that McKinnon interpreted as an administrative record of a clandestine space fleet operating beyond publicly known programmes.
Dr. Steven Greer identifies a parallel track of Lockheed Skunk Works classified programmes involving electrogravitic craft — human-built Alien Reproduction Vehicles that use electromagnetic field propulsion rather than aerodynamic lift — distinct from Aurora but sharing the same deep-black administrative structure.
