Frank Stranges (1927–2008) was an American Christian minister, author, and UFO researcher best known for his claim of a personal meeting with a Venusian named Valiant Thor at the Pentagon in 1957 and his subsequent books documenting that encounter, most notably Stranger at the Pentagon (1967) — one of the foundational texts of the modern contactee tradition connecting Venusian NHI contact with U.S. government secrecy. Stranges claimed that Valiant Thor came to the U.S. to offer assistance to humanity — specifically a solution to disease and suffering — and was rebuffed by the Eisenhower administration, which declined his offers because implementing them would collapse the pharmaceutical and military industries.
Background
Before becoming a UFO researcher, Stranges had been a federal marshal, an investigator, and a Pentecostal minister; he was also president of the International Evangelical Crusades and the International Theological Seminary of California. In 1960 he first published his account of Val Thor in a pamphlet titled My Friend from Beyond Earth, which he later expanded into the 1967 book Stranger at the Pentagon. In 1963, between the pamphlet and the book, Stranges was arrested and convicted of fraud by the State of California over a diploma mill that charged students $25 for immediate doctorates in divinity, serving a few months in prison and paying a fine; around the same period he was convicted a second time, on drug-smuggling charges, which he disputed and later claimed to have been pardoned for.
Valiant Thor account
In Stranges' account, Valiant Thor arrived on March 16, 1957, and came to offer humanity solutions to disease, food scarcity, energy dependency, and warfare — technologies that would "cure all diseases, solve the problem of hunger, and put an end to all human war forever." Thor met with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon; Eisenhower reportedly said he would accept the offer "in a second, but it's not up to me." Val remained at the Pentagon for three years under the care of the USAF and CIA; world leaders refused to bring his message to the people, and the offer was rejected.
Thor's arrival at the Pentagon occurred through a landing of his spacecraft in Alexandria, Virginia, from which he and two companions walked to the Pentagon and made direct contact with government officials without prior arrangement — an event described in Stranges' 1967 book as the beginning of an unusual three-year covert diplomatic mission.
Physical appearance and nature
Stranges described Valiant Thor as fully human in appearance — distinguishable from Earth humans primarily by anatomical differences in his extremities. Stranges claimed that the Venusians possessed six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, a detail he repeated consistently across multiple public presentations over decades. Thor appeared to be approximately 30 years old in physical appearance despite a claimed actual age of 58, consistent with claims in later SSP and contactee testimony that Venusian and other NHI physiology includes substantially extended lifespan and slower aging.
Stranges characterized Thor's rejection by the Eisenhower administration as the product of a shadow government that kept Eisenhower and Nixon from implementing the Venusian's plans out of concern for corporate pharmaceutical and defense industry interests: those forces "as dark as the clothes they wore" kept both leaders from accepting an offer that Eisenhower personally supported but could not implement unilaterally.
Independent witness reports
The account has been partially corroborated by others including Harley Byrd (nephew of Admiral Richard Byrd) who claimed to have seen Thor at the Pentagon.
After the release of Craig Campobasso's 2013 short film adaptation of Stranger at the Pentagon, Laura Eisenhower — great-granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower — went public with her own testimony affirming confidence that her great-grandfather had met with a Venusian commander, lending additional family-level corroboration to Stranges' account. In a separate interview, Eisenhower described Valiant Thor's Pentagon presence: "there was Valiant Thor. He was put on VIP status at the Pentagon... the beings from Venus were present for a couple of years and they proposed something to Eisenhower and Eisenhower was in agreement to it... it was all about assisting the human race in becoming sovereign."
Rob Potter, a contactee who claims personal acquaintance with both Stranges and Thor, stated that the original photographs of Valiant Thor, Commander Donn, and Jill — taken at Howard Menger's property on March 16, 1957 — were given to him by Stranges himself; Michael Salla noted that "Frank Stranges actually got that photo and was showing it at lectures and that's how he was then taken to the Pentagon and met with Commander Thor." Potter further recounted that in his own conversations with Stranges, the minister told him that when Valiant Thor met Eisenhower, the President "was sympathetic" and that Thor subsequently "agreed to stay and help them in the secret space program" — specifically inventing the G-suit to prevent pilots from blacking out during high-acceleration maneuvers.
Elena Danaan has described her own communications with Val Thor as consistent with and extending Stranges' original account, connecting Val to the Ahel species of Taygeta.
Institutional disputes
When Stranges began publicizing his Valiant Thor account in the early 1960s, the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) — then the most credible civilian UFO research organization in the United States — canceled his membership, returned his membership fees, and publicly disavowed his claims, declaring Stranges untrustworthy prior to his assertions about meeting a Venusian. This institutional rejection placed Stranges outside the mainstream UFO research community but did not prevent him from building a loyal following. The group he gathered around the Valiant Thor material — which he called the Inner Circle — comprised several hundred believers who claimed to have gained exceptional spiritual insight from their engagement with the Venusian teachings Stranges relayed.
Legacy
Stranges founded the National Investigations Committee on Unidentified Flying Objects (NICUFO) in the 1960s. His Stranger at the Pentagon remains one of the most read contactee books of the 20th century, with Michael Salla incorporating the Valiant Thor account into his broader exopolitics framework as an early example of covert diplomatic contact between Venusian NHI and the U.S. government. Stranges went on to publish close to a dozen books about Valiant Thor, maintaining the account as his primary public mission until his death in 2008.
