Sherry Walker

Captain Sherry Walker is an American commercial airline captain, flight instructor, and college professor who has flown commercially since 1991 and who argues that the decline of commercial aviation safety in the United States stems from DEI and ESG mandates replacing merit-based hiring and training standards across the airline industry and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). She is also a professor of human factors at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Biography

Background

Walker began commercial flying in 1991, at a time when fewer than four percent of airline transport pilots in the United States were female. She describes herself as an aviator rather than an "air person," having reached captain rank through the same progression required of her male peers. In a March 2025 interview on The Tucker Carlson Show, she addressed both the systemic factors she believes underlie recent U.S. aviation incidents and her analysis of specific accidents.

Claims about aviation decline

The decline of airline safety and culture stems from a combination of ESG-driven corporate priorities and DEI hiring mandates. Airlines — which depend operationally on fuel, aircraft, and people — have shifted focus away from pilot quality as a consequence of investor pressure to improve ESG scores and expand fleets at low financing costs, sidelining the internal-customer culture associated with leaders such as Gordon Bethune and Herb Kelleher.

On hiring, she cites a major airline CEO's 2021 public commitment that fifty percent of incoming pilots would be women or people of colour — a target she describes as numerically impossible given the existing pilot demographic and structurally corrosive to quality regardless of the protected attribute selected. She states that DEI training at her own airline required her to certify that a male colleague was a woman in every sense, which she refused on religious grounds, ultimately forcing a group of pilots to file for religious accommodations.

A generational skills gap compounds the DEI problem: pilots trained on glass glass-cockpit aircraft arrive at airlines as operators rather than aviators — capable of managing automation but lacking manual handling skill — and are being promoted to captain within a year of hire rather than spending a decade building judgment. The Air Line Pilots Association is partly responsible for opposing an increase in the mandatory retirement age, noting that younger pilots voted to push out senior captains rather than retain their mentoring capacity.

Analysis of specific incidents

Reagan National mid-air collision (2025)

The Reagan National Airport mid-air collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, based on the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary press conference. The chairwoman's disclosure was "astounding": that the approach corridor in question had recorded more than 945,000 potential incursions over eleven years, and that the design clearance between an approaching airliner and a helicopter holding its ideal position could be as little as 75 feet — comparable to the pre-flight width regulation between herself and her first officer. Structural responsibility lies with the FAA's dual mandate — to both promote and regulate aviation — which which creates an institutional conflict precluding rigorous proactive oversight, citing Boeing's prior permission to self-certify the Boeing 737 MAX as an illustration of the same dynamic.

COVID-19 vaccine mandate and pilot health

Walker reported that on 6 August 2021, the CEO of her airline announced a vaccine mandate requiring compliance within one month or termination. Together with Captain Laura Cox and an attorney, she organised a resistance effort that ultimately involved approximately 2,000 employees filing religious and medical accommodation requests. She noted that only three U.S. airlines — Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and United Airlines — independently mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for employees; the rest followed only after the Biden administration imposed the OSHA employer mandate for companies with more than 100 employees, which was subsequently overturned in court. Walker is the co-founder of Airline Employees 4 Health Freedom (AE4HF), an organisation that advocates for pilot health screening and has conducted research into cardiac adverse events among vaccinated pilots, and is a researcher on the Oklahoma State University pilot health study.

Toronto Pearson landing accident (2025)

On the Air Canada regional jet that overturned on landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Human-factors analysis of the accident identified the flying pilot from radio transcript voice patterns (the non-transmitting crew member flies while the other communicates) and a ground-level snow swirl caused the pilot to lose runway situational awareness at the critical transition to visual landing, resulting in a hard contact that collapsed the gear and allowed one wing to rise before the aircraft rolled inverted.
