The TR-3A, popularly nicknamed the Black Manta, is an alleged smaller triangular reconnaissance aircraft grouped with the United States black-program black triangles and associated with the same Aurora lineage as the larger TR-3B. It is distinguished from the TR-3B, the fully electrogravitic antigravity platform, as a smaller and more conventional reconnaissance airframe; the two designations are frequently conflated under the composite name "TR-3B Black Manta," which properly attaches the "Black Manta" nickname to the smaller TR-3A.
Joe Rogan connected the black-triangle craft to sightings during Desert Storm of a smaller triangular aircraft designated the TR-3A. In the account of the aerospace writer Edgar Fouché, the TR-3A sits within the broader AURORA program alongside the SR-75 Penetrator and the antigravity TR-3B, the various platforms representing successive steps between transitional scramjet aerospace and the fully electrogravitic triangle.
