Bigelow Aerospace
Bigelow Aerospace was an American space technology company founded by Robert Bigelow in 1998 and headquartered in North Las Vegas, Nevada that specialized in expandable space habitat development. The company was funded primarily through Bigelow's profits from the Budget Suites of America hotel chain and ceased active operations in March 2020. Bigelow Aerospace is also the parent company of Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS), which received the 2008 AAWSAP contract from the Defense Intelligence Agency to investigate UAP and anomalous phenomena.
Robert Bigelow and the founding
Robert Bigelow built his initial fortune in real estate development in Nevada, founding Budget Suites of America — a chain of extended-stay hotels — before pivoting to aerospace investment. His interest in UAP and anomalous phenomena predated Bigelow Aerospace by decades; he publicly stated that a close family member experienced a dramatic UAP encounter that motivated his lifelong focus on the subject. In 1995, Bigelow founded the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) — a private research organization that employed credentialed scientists, former military intelligence officers, and law enforcement professionals to investigate UAP sightings, cattle mutilations, and anomalous phenomena using rigorous scientific methodology. NIDS produced internal research reports on UAP cases, animal mutilation patterns, and other phenomena — reports that were not publicly released but circulated within the government research community and laid the groundwork for the later AAWSAP contract relationship.
Bigelow founded Bigelow Aerospace in 1999 with the explicit long-term goal of developing commercial space habitats — a vision that combined his aerospace interests with the practical business model of providing private orbital infrastructure. The company's compound in North Las Vegas — which Brandon Fugal, Bigelow's eventual successor as owner of Skinwalker Ranch, described as "the closest thing to a James Bond villain lair that I've ever seen... huge buildings that house full size space stations and space habitats" — became both the production facility for hardware and the storage site for anomalous materials acquired during the BAASS program.
Expandable habitat technology
Bigelow Aerospace's primary commercial product is the BEAM (Bigelow Expandable Activity Module), an expandable habitat technology licensed from NASA's cancelled TransHab program. The company licensed the underlying expandable module technology from NASA in 2000 and held three Space Act Agreements as the sole commercializer of NASA's expandable technologies, investing approximately $75 million in proprietary modifications by mid-2006. A BEAM prototype was attached to the International Space Station in 2016 and remained operational through the early 2020s. The company's B330 habitat design was intended as a freestanding commercial space station module with 330 cubic meters of pressurized volume.
The expandable habitat concept represented a potential leap in commercial space infrastructure costs: inflatable modules can be compressed for launch in a conventional rocket fairing and expanded to full size on orbit, dramatically increasing the usable volume per dollar of launch mass. Bigelow's B330 design, if deployed at commercial scale, would have provided more than three times the pressurized volume of any single ISS module. At the time of the AAWSAP contract period (2008–2012), Bigelow was simultaneously in discussions with SpaceX and NASA about habitat supply arrangements for future lunar and orbital missions — a dual track of black-budget anomalous phenomena research and legitimate commercial space development that was characteristic of his business model throughout the period.
The expandable modules used multiple Vectran layers — a high-strength fiber Bigelow described as a double-strength variant of Kevlar — providing superior micrometeoroid resistance; ground testing showed Bigelow materials resisted penetration "about halfway through" relative to standard ISS module materials, theoretically allowing roughly 24 hours to remedy punctures. Targeted applications included microgravity research, on-orbit manufacturing, variable-gravity studies (Moon at 0.16 g; Mars at 0.38 g), space tourism, and transportation infrastructure.
Genesis test modules
Bigelow Aerospace launched two unmanned subscale test modules to demonstrate the expandable habitat concept on orbit: Genesis I (July 12, 2006) and Genesis II (June 28, 2007), both inserted into low Earth orbit aboard converted Soviet-era Dnepr launch vehicles from Dombarovsky Air Base in Russia. The Genesis program validated deployment, pressurization, and long-duration exposure of expandable structures and provided the engineering basis for the BEAM and B330 designs.
BEAM specifications and ISS deployment
NASA contracted Bigelow Aerospace in December 2012 for $17.8 million to deliver the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) — a 16 m³ (565 cu ft) attachment to the ISS for two-year evaluation of structural integrity, leak rate, radiation dosage, and thermal performance. BEAM was launched aboard the SpaceX CRS-8 Dragon mission on April 8, 2016 and successfully inflated at the ISS the following month. Originally scheduled for removal at the end of the test period, NASA announced an extension in October 2017 — the first of a series of decisions to retain the module indefinitely; by 2019 the agency had cleared BEAM for service through 2031. Bigelow transferred ownership of BEAM to NASA's Johnson Space Center in December 2021.
B330 development and launch arrangements
The flagship B330 module — approximately 45 ft (14 m) long by 22 ft (6.7 m) in diameter when expanded, with a launch mass near 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) — was intended as a freestanding commercial space station building block. In April 2016, United Launch Alliance (ULA) announced a Atlas V 552 booking for B330 delivery in 2020. In October 2017, ULA stated that the Vulcan Centaur was "the only launch vehicle available with the performance and fairing capacity" required for the B330. The B330 program was cancelled when the company shut down operations in 2020.
Workforce and operational history
Bigelow Aerospace's workforce expanded and contracted in cycles tracking the availability of crewed transport options. In September 2011, the company laid off 40 of approximately 90 employees, citing delays in U.S. crewed transport capability following the Space Shuttle retirement; rehiring began in March 2012 and by 2015 the company was advertising more than 100 open positions. In January 2016 a further round of 30–50 layoffs was conducted from a peak workforce of approximately 150, accompanied by closure of a Huntsville, Alabama facility. In March 2020, citing the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bigelow laid off the entirety of its remaining 88 employees.
NASA lawsuit
In March 2021, Bigelow Aerospace filed suit against NASA seeking $1.05 million for BEAM project work, contending it had met all required milestones and deliverables under the contract; NASA countered that full payment had already been made and that Bigelow had not met the criteria for additional payments.
Crew transport partnerships
Because the Bigelow business model required reliable human transportation to low Earth orbit, the company pursued a series of partnerships with launch and capsule providers. In 2004 it offered the $50 million America's Space Prize for an industry-developed crewed orbital vehicle, which expired without a winner in early 2010. In August 2009 the company announced Orion Lite — a lower-cost variant of NASA's Orion capsule. In 2010 it pursued options with Boeing's CST-100 on Atlas V and SpaceX's Dragon on Falcon 9, and in May 2012 announced a joint marketing arrangement with SpaceX. Corporate counsel Mike Gold characterised the strategy as deliberately multi-vendor: "we would be foolish to depend completely on one capsule provider."
Beyond-LEO ambitions
Bigelow Aerospace publicly explored multiple beyond-low-Earth-orbit concepts. In February 2010, Robert Bigelow stated, "We as a company have lunar ambitions,... and we also have Mars ambitions." An April 2010 proposal envisioned positioning Bigelow stations at the Earth–Moon Lagrange point L1, with a private moon base composed of three B330 modules. A March 2013 Space Act Agreement with NASA covered private exploration contributions and lunar base construction. In December 2014, the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation completed a regulatory review of the proposed lunar habitat, indicating willingness to ensure Bigelow could carry out lunar activities without interference from other U.S. companies. In June 2019, Bigelow Aerospace unveiled "First Base," a 330 m³ lunar surface station for four people with four airlocks and two warehouses topped with solar arrays; the project was cancelled in 2020.
Bigelow Commercial Space Station
The "Bigelow Next-Generation Commercial Space Station" — branded "Space Complex Alpha" from October 2010 — was planned as a private orbital complex initially comprising two Sundancer modules and one B330. By 2013 the company stated that B330 modules would be ready to launch in 2017, contingent on the availability of commercial crew transport. In an October 2010 announcement, Bigelow identified six nations with usage agreements: the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and Sweden; Dubai (UAE) became the seventh by February 2011.
Honors
Bigelow Aerospace received the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation Innovator Award on October 3, 2006 and the Space Foundation 2007 Space Achievement Award (announced January 26, 2007; presented April 9, 2007).
Skinwalker Ranch ownership
Robert Bigelow purchased Skinwalker Ranch in Utah in 1996 for approximately $200,000 from the Sherman family, who had reported repeated anomalous events on the property. Bigelow funded a resident investigation team — the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) — that documented cattle mutilations, poltergeist phenomena, and UAP sightings. When BAASS received the AAWSAP contract in 2008, Skinwalker Ranch became an official AAWSAP research site. Bigelow sold the ranch to Adamantium Holdings in 2016, after which the property was developed into the Secret of Skinwalker Ranch television series.
The sale to Brandon Fugal — a Utah real estate developer who became the ranch's current owner and the subject of the television series — was preceded by a meeting at the Bigelow Aerospace compound in Las Vegas. Bigelow indicated he was willing to sell as he was focused on commercial space negotiations with SpaceX and NASA. Bigelow declined to transfer any of the research data accumulated during the NIDS and AAWSAP periods, citing both the classified nature of the BAASS program and personal preference. As Fugal later recounted: "He said he wanted to keep that private. And he felt that the Ranch was part of a Pentagon-funded black budget program between 2007 and 2013."
AAWSAP and BAASS

In 2008, BAASS — a NIDS successor entity created to receive government contracts — was awarded the $22 million DIA contract to run AAWSAP. BAASS employed approximately 40–50 staff at peak operation, produced 38 Defense Intelligence Reference Documents (DIRDs) on exotic technologies, and ran field investigations of UAP witnesses, biological effects, and paranormal phenomena. The program's existence was first publicly acknowledged in a 2017 New York Times article, which named Bigelow as the primary contractor.
The 38 DIRDs produced under BAASS contract covered exotic propulsion concepts, quantum vacuum energy, high-frequency gravitational wave communications, warp drive physics, and related topics — effectively a classified state-of-the-art review of advanced physics concepts relevant to UAP propulsion and behavior. Several of the DIRD authors were prominent academic physicists, including Hal Puthoff and Eric Davis, who were retained as BAASS contractors. The DIRDs were formally classified as Defense Intelligence Reference Documents and, when partially released through FOIA litigation by journalists, confirmed that the U.S. government had been formally researching topics far beyond the "mere misidentification" public posture it maintained regarding UAP through the same period.
Metamaterials claims
The 2017 New York Times article that first disclosed the existence of AATIP (a related program to AAWSAP) reported that Bigelow Aerospace had "modified buildings in Las Vegas for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and other program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena." This statement — in a major newspaper, citing government program officials by name — was the first public acknowledgment that a government-connected contractor had claimed physical possession of non-human-origin materials in the modern disclosure period.
Luis Elizondo, the former director of AATIP, confirmed in multiple interviews that the materials held at Bigelow Aerospace facilities were of potential non-human origin and were part of an ongoing government assessment program. The materials question — whether Bigelow's North Las Vegas compound held physical recovered craft or craft components — became a focus of congressional UAP investigation interest after the 2017 disclosures. Bigelow himself, in a 2017 CBS 60 Minutes interview, stated that he was "absolutely convinced" of extraterrestrial presence and that the U.S. government possessed recovered materials — a statement made by a sitting government contractor with direct program knowledge, not an outside researcher or witness.
Senate connections and Harry Reid
The AAWSAP contract was arranged with significant support from U.S. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) — the Senate Majority Leader at the time — who had a long personal relationship with Bigelow and had become convinced of the significance of the UAP phenomenon through briefings that Bigelow arranged. Reid, along with Senators Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Ted Stevens (R-AK), secured the initial $22 million appropriation for AAWSAP through the Defense Appropriations process. The three senators were all members of the "Gang of Eight" senior congressional leadership who receive the most sensitive intelligence briefings — their personal involvement in launching the program is consistent with the assessment that the UAP question had reached the highest levels of congressional awareness by the mid-2000s. Reid later publicly stated that he had "no regrets" about the program and that UAP represented a genuine national security issue warranting further investigation.
2020 workforce layoff and current status
In March 2020, Bigelow Aerospace laid off its entire workforce of approximately 68 employees, citing the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company remained technically operational but with no active production staff. The BEAM module on the ISS continued to function with NASA monitoring. Bigelow subsequently founded a new entity, Bigelow Space Operations, to pursue the B330 commercial station concept. The BAASS program had formally concluded prior to the layoffs; its records, materials, and data remain under the classification arrangements established during the DIA contract period. Whether the materials claimed to have been stored at the Bigelow compound were transferred, retained under new arrangements, or remain in a classified government custody chain has not been publicly disclosed.
NIDS field methodology at Skinwalker Ranch
The National Institute for Discovery Science's investigation at Skinwalker Ranch, prior to the AAWSAP contract, established the field methodology that later informed the BAASS program. Brandon Fugal, describing the NIDS era based on his review of the research record, noted that Bigelow's team installed three observation towers on the property, each with "bait pens surrounded by razor wire" using animals as biosensors — a predator-lure methodology designed to draw out whatever entities were responsible for the anomalous activity. The resident science team documented cattle mutilations, poltergeist phenomena, and UAP sightings under field conditions. The UFO activity documented at the ranch during the NIDS era was consistent with a broader pattern across the entire Uinta Basin studied by local researcher Joseph Junior Hicks, who spent 70 years documenting UAP activity in the region before his death.
Jacques Vallée on BAASS research limitations
Jacques Vallée, a BAASS contractor, noted in a 2025 interview that the program's classified research template — requiring documentation of trajectory, composition, luminosity, and radiation in the manner of conventional aerospace intelligence — reflected the standard toolkit for analysing Soviet aircraft rather than the novel phenomena being observed. Vallée expressed concern that the compartmented structure of the BAASS program prevented the kind of interdisciplinary synthesis — combining physics, consciousness research, and historical analysis — that he believed the phenomenon required.
Self-funded research and additional facilities
Luis Elizondo, who ran AATIP as a component within the broader AAWSAP umbrella, has described Bigelow as "an American hero," stating: "I've seen what he's been able to contribute to our country... our country owes him a great deal of gratitude for what he's been able to do for our nation." Elizondo confirmed that Bigelow self-funded significant research efforts beyond the government contract, noting that "there was more than one ranch" — that Bigelow operated additional anomalous-phenomena research facilities beyond Skinwalker Ranch that are not publicly known. Regarding Bigelow's refusal to transfer NIDS-era research data to Brandon Fugal when selling the ranch, Elizondo speculated that Bigelow may have been constrained by the classified nature of the AAWSAP program: "maybe he's like, look, it's proprietary to the AAWSAP. All this information we did is proprietary to the U.S. government. I can't release it without the US government's approval."
In a separate interview, Elizondo confirmed that the data produced under the BAASS program "was very compelling" and that Brandon Fugal and others have since "recognized the validity of some of that data," while declining to elaborate further on the specifics of the Skinwalker Ranch research portfolio.
