Faked death, also faking death or pseudocide, is the fabrication of a death that did not occur, so that a living person is made to appear dead. Where a covert assassination kills the target and disguises the killing as a suicide or accident, a faked death does the opposite: no one is killed, and a death is manufactured through means such as swapping in another body, staging a fatal scene, or falsifying the records that certify a death.[citation needed] When the fabricated death is presented as a suicide, it is a faked suicide — the deceptive counterpart of the staged suicide, in which a real killing is dressed as suicide.
In the context of elite conspiracies and the apparatus that manages their secrecy, faked death is described as a tradecraft technique with several uses: to exfiltrate and protect a cooperating witness or asset by retiring their public identity; to remove an inconvenient figure from view without an actual killing; or to close the file on an operative whose continued existence would be a liability.[citation needed] It shares with covert assassination the aim of ending a person's public presence, but differs categorically in that the person survives — a distinction that matters for how an alleged case is investigated and cross-linked, since a faked death implies a living person who might resurface, whereas a covert killing does not.
Distinction from covert killing
The line between a faked death and a covert killing is the crux of many disputed cases: an official death ruling may reflect a real homicide disguised as suicide or accident (a covert assassination), a genuine death, or a wholly fabricated death behind which the person is still alive. Because both deception and murder can produce the same official record, an alleged faked death is argued from anomalies — a closed-casket or absent body, inconsistencies in identification, sealed or altered records, or a later reported sighting — rather than from the death certificate itself.[citation needed] The broader pattern of contested deaths among UFO researchers and insiders, most of them ruled suicides or accidents, is documented at UFO researcher deaths.
