Kathleen Marden
Kathleen Marden is an American UFO abduction researcher, author, and lecturer who serves as Director of the Experiencer Research Team of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). She is the niece of Betty Hill, one of the first widely documented alien abductees, and was present in the Hill household in the immediate aftermath of the 1961 abduction incident. Marden co-authored Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience (2007) with Stanton Friedman and has written several additional books on abduction phenomena and contact.

Background
Marden holds a Bachelor of Science degree in social work and a graduate degree from the University of New Hampshire. As Betty Hill's niece, she had direct access to Betty and Barney Hill's contemporaneous letters, diaries, and hypnosis session recordings documenting their claimed September 1961 abduction — materials that formed the primary source base for her co-authored account with Friedman. She subsequently became trustee of Betty Hill's estate and archive.
Marden was twelve years old at the time of the Hills' abduction on 19–20 September 1961, near Indian Head, New Hampshire, and was among the family members who received Betty Hill's initial distressed phone call in the aftermath. This direct familial connection, combined with her subsequent custody of the Hills' personal archive — including the original hypnosis session tapes recorded by Benjamin Simon — gave Marden unparalleled access to primary documentation of the case.

Research and MUFON role
Marden serves as MUFON's Director of Experiencer Research, conducting interviews with individuals who report ongoing contact with non-human intelligences and compiling comparative data across cases. In this role she has developed standardised interview protocols for experiencers and has compiled one of the largest datasets of comparative abduction testimonies in the civilian research community. She also leads MUFON's STAR Team — a rapid-response investigation unit deployed to high-priority cases — and has trained investigators in witness interview methodology.
Marden collaborated with Stanton Friedman on archival research related to prominent UFO sceptic Philip Klass, and the project brought Marden and Friedman to the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia to review Klass's personal files. The research revealed extensive correspondence between Klass and figures including Donald Menzel and Edward Condon and demonstrated financial connections to institutional sceptic networks.
Marden is frequently cited as a primary authority on the Hill case and as a corrective source when claims about Betty Hill's activities circulate without documentation.
The Betty and Barney Hill case
The Betty and Barney Hill abduction of 19–20 September 1961 is the foundation of Marden's research career. Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial married couple from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, reported losing approximately two hours of time while driving home from Niagara Falls through the White Mountains, after observing and being apparently pursued by a large craft with coloured lights. Betty subsequently experienced a series of vivid dreams she described as recovered memory — which she wrote in a letter — and Barney began suffering from anxiety and stress-related symptoms.
The case achieved landmark status when Benjamin Simon, a Boston psychiatrist, conducted hypnotic regression sessions with both Hills separately in 1963–1964, and both produced consistent accounts of being taken aboard a craft, subjected to medical examination, and returned. Betty described a Hill star map — a three-dimensional map shown to her aboard the craft — which astronomer Marjorie Fish subsequently proposed corresponded to the Zeta Reticuli system. Marden's research has focused on corroborating and contextualising these accounts using the contemporaneous documentary record she inherited as estate trustee.
Abduction researcher David Jacobs noted that he knew Betty Hill personally for many years and knew Marden — whom he referred to as "Kathy Martin" — as the person with primary knowledge of the case details, though he disagreed with the characterisation Betty gave of the procedure performed on her during her abduction, arguing that what Betty described as a "pregnancy test" (needle inserted in the navel) was in fact an ovarian follicle extraction that recurs in hundreds of his own regression sessions. Travis Walton noted a physical resemblance between the being he encountered aboard a craft and the beings described by Betty Hill — "He was dressed the way Betty Hill's beings were in the black suit" — a detail that abduction researchers including Marden have cited as a cross-case consistency point supporting the Hill account's credibility.
The Hill case was subject to coordinated debunking campaigns over several decades. Jennifer Stein, a documentary filmmaker who worked with both Marden and Friedman on archival research, documented that both the Hill case and the Travis Walton abduction were attacked simultaneously on two continents by campaigns she characterised as financed and organised rather than grassroots.
Hypnotic regression research
Marden has written extensively on the methodology and validity of hypnotic regression as applied to abduction research. The Hill case was among the first to apply formal hypnosis to abduction recall, and the tapes of Benjamin Simon's sessions with Betty and Barney Hill represent foundational documents in abduction research methodology. Marden's custody of these materials has allowed her to publish detailed analyses of the consistency and cross-correlation of the Hills' separately produced accounts.
Marden has also conducted hypnotic regression sessions with experiencers through her MUFON Experiencer Research role, and has commented publicly on the proper application of regression protocols to minimise suggestion and contamination. Researcher Budd Hopkins, who also applied hypnotic regression extensively in abduction cases, described the technique as "a very helpful and cathartic method of looking into these experiences" when applied correctly. Marden's work has built on Hopkins's framework while incorporating more recent developments in memory research and witness psychology.
