Garry Nolan is an American immunologist and cancer researcher, a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology, known in mainstream science for developing high-dimensional imaging instruments used in single-cell analysis of the immune system, and in UAP research for analyzing alleged anomalous materials, leading a study of brain imaging in UAP experiencers, and co-founding the SOL Foundation. On The Joe Rogan Experience in August 2025 he stated his age as 64, placing his birth year at approximately 1960–1961.
Nolan holds that the weight of evidence supports the existence of non-human intelligence visiting or interacting with Earth, but he consistently separates that personal assessment from his own published scientific findings, which he describes as producing data rather than conclusions about origin. A 2023 documentary produced by Yes Theory described him as a Nobel Prize nominee, among other honors, though Nobel nominations are sealed and the claim has not been independently verified elsewhere in his own accounts of his career. No named skeptic or rival researcher has published a critical assessment of Nolan's UAP-related work.
Background and academic career
Nolan received his doctoral training at Stanford University under Len Herzenberg, whose laboratory had developed the fluorescence-activated cell sorter. He then completed postdoctoral work with David Baltimore at MIT, where Baltimore had won the Nobel Prize for reverse transcriptase, before returning to Stanford as an assistant professor. There he developed the 293T retroviral producer system, now used in tens of thousands of laboratories worldwide, and technologies for analyzing 50–60 proteins simultaneously in single cells — a hundred-fold expansion over existing methods — founding a succession of companies that commercialized this work, including one sold to Roche and one sold to 10x Genomics.
His laboratory's primary focus is cancer immunology: understanding how tumors evolve to evade immune recognition and how that evasion can be reversed, building on the work of Jim Allison, whose blockade of immune "turn-off" signals turned a 5% survival rate for melanoma into a 50% survival rate and launched the modern immunotherapy field. Nolan carries a hereditary mutation he calls MIDF that predisposes him to both melanoma and kidney cancer; he has had both, and describes his own cancer diagnoses as a personal driver of his research.
Entry into UAP research
Nolan's entry into UAP-related work came through his analysis of the "Atacama humanoid," a small mummified body found in Chile that had drawn claims of extraterrestrial origin from Steven Greer. Around 2011–2012 he obtained bone material, assembled a team of Stanford specialists and Roche Diagnostics, and published a peer-reviewed paper concluding the specimen was human — a female with an unusually large number of mutations associated with bone-growth disorders.
Shortly after the Atacama paper's associated documentary was released, Nolan received an unannounced visit at his Stanford office from a representative of the CIA and an aerospace company, who asked for his help analyzing medical records and MRI scans of military and diplomatic personnel who claimed to have been harmed by unknown phenomena — the origin of the Stanford UAP experiencer brain study. Through the same CIA representatives, Nolan was introduced to the broader network of UAP investigators he calls the "invisible college" — including Jacques Vallée, Hal Puthoff, Eric Davis, Robert Bigelow, and Colm Kelleher — who showed him MRI scans of government personnel before his own basal ganglia analysis began. He was an early associate of Luis Elizondo, meeting him roughly two weeks before the December 2017 New York Times article that brought the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program into public view, and later became connected with David Grusch and Ryan Graves.

Reviewing roughly 100 patients' medical records referred to him by the CIA contacts, Nolan found that most were early Havana syndrome cases, while about ten did not fit that profile and reported their symptoms had begun after contact with a UAP. Reviewing the accompanying MRIs, Nolan and colleagues identified an enriched, MRI-dense feature in the basal ganglia — which he describes as a "brain within the brain" involved in goal processing and planning — that later analysis showed to be heritable rather than injury-related, appearing in Nolan's own family and in husband-and-wife pairs within the study cohort.
UAP materials analysis
Through his mentorship by Jacques Vallée, Nolan obtained alleged UAP-related physical materials with documented chains of custody and subjected them to mass spectrometry to determine elemental and isotopic composition. Among the samples he analyzed was a magnesium-alloy fragment from the Ubatuba incident in Brazil, dating to the late 1950s and obtained by Vallée, in which he reported magnesium isotope ratios dramatically outside the terrestrial and solar-system norm. On a 2024 episode of American Alchemy with Jesse Michels, Nolan displayed small metallic fragments at his Stanford lab, including a separate sample of layered bismuth-magnesium material, and remarked of possible government-held material: "Maybe the stuff that we have somebody is sitting around saying laughably they're wasting their time on exhaust. We have the engine."
The SOL Foundation and congressional involvement
Nolan is a co-founder and chairman of the board of the SOL Foundation, a Stanford-affiliated research organization that convenes scientists, philosophers, and policy specialists to study UAP through academic channels; he co-founded it with David Grusch, before Grusch departed to pursue his whistleblower activities and later governmental responsibilities. Nolan described the organization's purpose as providing a professional forum "not to advocate that any of this is real" but to allow academics, policy professionals, and laypeople to examine the evidence rigorously, and it has held annual symposia at Stanford, San Francisco, and Italy. He is also a member of the Galileo Project.
Nolan was present at the 2023 congressional UAP hearings and was informed the night before that he had been requested for a classified closed session — a request he says was denied: "I was told last night that they requested me to be cleared for a closed session after. But the request was denied. I was blocked. So that's like obvious obstruction."
Views on non-human intelligence
Nolan states that the self-consistency of UAP experiencer testimony across unconnected witnesses — including the 1994 Ariel School UFO incident in Zimbabwe — warrants serious scientific inquiry even where individual accounts cannot be verified. He argues that UAP-related technology, if genuine, represents potential access to physics radically beyond human capability and warrants a public-private research structure rather than continued concealment, possibly including amnesty for those who managed classified programs. He met Jacques Vallée around the same time as Elizondo and has described him as a formative intellectual influence, particularly the idea that UAP encounters may function as a "control system" or influence campaign on human civilization rather than straightforward visitations.
In a 2025 conversation with Jordan B. Peterson, Nolan discussed the hypothesis of a long-term non-human presence on Earth; Peterson stated his own provisional conclusion that "there's something non-human here and it's been here for a long time," framing the prior question of whether such a presence is possible as easily answerable given the age of the universe and the scale of the galaxy.
