Project Winterhaven was a classified research proposal submitted to the Office of Naval Research by physicist and inventor Thomas Townsend Brown in 1952, calling for the United States government to fund development of a Mach-3 disc-shaped aircraft propelled exclusively by electrogravitic forces derived from the Biefeld–Brown effect. Brown's supporters assert that the proposal was accepted in a classified form, that subsequent electrogravitics research was transferred into black programs inaccessible to independent researchers, and that the disc aircraft described in Project Winterhaven became the template for the classified triangular and disc-shaped craft later reported by military whistleblowers. The formal declassification status of Project Winterhaven remains unclear; its existence was noted by electrogravitics researcher and writer Thomas Valone and referenced in declassified Aviation Studies International documents from 1956 that described the anticipated development of a 1,680-mph electrogravitic platform by the major US aerospace contractors.

Background

Thomas Townsend Brown had spent two decades attempting to interest the US Navy and military establishment in his electrogravitic research, beginning with early demonstrations of the Biefeld–Brown effect in the 1920s and continuing through Project RAND and post-war contacts with the Office of Naval Research. By 1952 he had demonstrated, to his own satisfaction, that a highly charged asymmetric capacitor produced genuine thrust in vacuum and that the effect scaled with voltage, suggesting a viable propulsion mechanism for atmospheric and eventually space-capable aircraft.

Proposed design

The Project Winterhaven proposal described a saucer-shaped disc aircraft approximately 40–50 feet in diameter, propelled by high-voltage electrostatic thrust applied across the leading edge of the craft. Brown calculated that the effect, at the voltages required, would allow the disc to achieve Mach 3 in the atmosphere without conventional jet or rocket propulsion — and, by extension, without the sonic booms and aerodynamic heating that limit conventional high-speed aircraft. A second-generation version of the platform was proposed to be capable of spaceflight.

Classification and alleged development

Aviation Studies International published a report in 1956, later partially declassified, noting that the major US aerospace contractors — including Lockheed, Convair, Glenn L. Martin Company, Sperry Gyroscope, Lear, and Bell Aircraft — had established classified electrogravitics research programs following Project Winterhaven. The report anticipated operational electrogravitic platforms achieving 1,680 mph within the decade. No public acknowledgment of any successor program has appeared in the unclassified record.

Per Brown's supporters, including Jesse Michels, the disappearance of electrogravitics from public scientific funding after 1956 is evidence that the field was successfully classified rather than abandoned — consistent with the pattern of other black programs such as the stealth fighter program, which also vanished from public view for over a decade before being acknowledged. Per Dan Willis, a Disclosure Project witness, the classified development that followed Project Winterhaven eventually intersected with the reverse-engineering of recovered non-human craft, producing hybrid propulsion systems currently operated under Special Access Programs.

Destructive potential

Jesse Michels, who produced a documentary on Townsend Brown's work for his American Alchemy channel, noted that the widely quoted assessment of Brown's electrogravitic research holds that the technology "would make a thermonuclear bomb look like a child's firecracker." Michels situated this in the broader context of dual-use advanced physics: technologies capable of providing essentially unlimited propulsion through electromagnetic-gravity unification would simultaneously represent weapons of extraordinary destructive potential — which Michels argued explains both the classification and the persistence of secrecy despite decades of public interest.

Hunt for Zero Point

Nick Cook, aviation editor of Jane's Defence Weekly, documented the post-Winterhaven electrogravitics landscape in his 2002 book The Hunt for Zero Point: Inside the Classified World of Antigravity Technology — published via archive.org — tracing the disappearance of all public research into electrogravitic propulsion after the mid-1950s and the circumstantial evidence that work continued inside classified contractor programs. Cook's research identified the same 1956 Aviation Studies International report as a central piece of evidence: it named Lockheed, Boeing, Glenn L. Martin Company, and other aerospace primes as engaged in active classified electrogravitics development, then went silent — consistent with full classification rather than program termination.

Cook's investigation paralleled that of Townsend Brown researchers including Thomas Valone, and his conclusion — that the electrogravitics field remained classified out of public science rather than proven unworkable — is the basis for the SSP community's identification of the TR-3B and similar triangular craft as Brown-lineage technology developed to operational maturity inside Special Access Programs over six decades.

Classified electromagnetic-gravity mathematics

Engineer Dave Rossi, discussing the theoretical foundations of electrogravitic propulsion in a 2024 forum with researcher Ashton Forbes, identified the Heaviside interpretation of Maxwell's equations as having established a direct analogy between electromagnetism and gravity in the 1880s — and argued that this finding was subsequently classified rather than published. Rossi cited Edward Teller as having disclosed in the 1980s that the equations enabling directed-alleged energy weapons (SDI-era programs) were being withheld in classified form in North America while the same literature was openly accessible in the Soviet Union. In this analysis, Project Winterhaven's disappearance from the public record after 1956 fits a wider pattern: the mathematical framework enabling electrogravitic propulsion was identified in the 19th century, suppressed in classification for decades, and re-surfaced only in fragmentary public glimpses such as Brown's proposal.

Lockheed connection

Harloff and Michels discussed the Townsend Brown–Lockheed connection in the context of the broader UAP disclosure: Harloff noted that Brown "dealt too much with Townsend Brown, who's the head of the Washington National Lab, so there's too much with him where I'm like, okay, this dude definitely intersected with the UFO world." Michels described the relationship as one where Brown's independent research track was feeding into, or being absorbed by, the same institutional network that managed crash retrievals — with Lockheed's Skunk Works cited as the most probable home for any successor electrogravitics program given its historical role in black aircraft development.
