Stanford University (Stanford, California; founded 1885) is a private research university significant in exopolitics and UAP disclosure primarily through the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) — a separate research institute founded in 1946 that conducted the Project STARGATE remote viewing program for the CIA and DIA from the early 1970s through 1995 — and through the work of faculty members including Hal Puthoff (quantum physicist and SRI remote viewing program director) and Garry Nolan (immunologist who analyzed implants and biological anomalies in alleged UAP contact cases).
SRI remote viewing program
Hal Puthoff received his PhD in quantum physics from Stanford and later transitioned to the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) to pursue laser and quantum research. At SRI, a chance encounter with Ingo Swann — who had reported anomalous psychic abilities at City College in New York — led to a formal CIA-funded investigation beginning around 1972. Puthoff described the initiation in detail: he invited Swann for a weekend experiment in which Swann was asked to influence a superconducting quantum chip shielded against all known electromagnetic interference. Swann generated anomalous signals in the device, which a CIA representative witnessed and subsequently used to justify funding a formal remote viewing program.
The program grew from a $50–60K initial CIA contract into a multi-decade classified operation running approximately 23 years, working with remote viewers including Ingo Swann, Pat Price, and Hella Hammid. A decisive operational success came when remote viewer Pat Price, given coordinates of a Soviet R&D facility at Semipalatinsk, produced drawings of a giant crane rolling over the top of a building — confirmed accurate by satellite imagery. President Jimmy Carter later publicly confirmed that SRI remote viewers had located a crashed Soviet aircraft in Africa after satellite reconnaissance failed, placing a marker within three miles of the actual crash site.
Puthoff described briefing CIA Director Bill Casey (under Reagan), who became so engaged with the remote viewing program that he dismissed his afternoon calendar and spent five hours being briefed — a response Puthoff characterized as typical of "really high level people" who tended to be more open to anomalous data than mid-level officials.

Garry Nolan: Atacama humanoid and NHI contact research
Garry Nolan, a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine whose primary research is in immunology and cancer biology, became involved in UAP-related biological research after being contacted to analyze the Atacama humanoid — a six-inch mummified figure discovered in Chile displaying anomalous skeletal morphology. Nolan assembled a team at Stanford including a pediatric bone-disorder specialist, a South American genetics expert, and Roche Diagnostics bioinformatics resources to sequence the humanoid's genome. The resulting publication concluded the figure was biologically human — a female child with specific skeletal gene mutations — rather than extraterrestrial.
Approximately one month after the Atacama documentary's release, Nolan received a visit at his Stanford office from a CIA representative and an aerospace company representative, who disclosed the existence of a scientific community he had been unaware of — government-connected researchers already deeply involved in UAP biological analysis — and invited him to contribute his expertise.
In subsequent work, Nolan analyzed blood samples from pilots and individuals with high UAP exposure. Using his laboratory's mass cytometry technology — which he had previously used to map immune cell complexity in cancer research — he identified a statistically anomalous pattern among high-contact individuals: hyperconnectivity in the caudate-putamen region of the brain, associated with enhanced pattern recognition. Nolan interpreted this as suggestive that NHI contact preferentially selects or affects individuals with specific neurological configurations.
Jacques Vallée and Stanford
Computer scientist and UFO researcher Jacques Vallée, who authored the "interdimensional hypothesis" of UFO origin in the 1960s–1970s, is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and has maintained connections to Stanford's academic community. Vallée's framing of UFO phenomena as involving control systems operating outside conventional spacetime has influenced multiple generations of researchers who passed through the Stanford-SRI intellectual community. Puthoff cited Vallée as a key influence on his own movement from classical physics toward consciousness-related research.
CIA Physicist on Ultraterrestrials
Puthoff's podcast CIA Physicist on Ultraterrestrials: The Classified Truth About UFOs? explored his view — developed across decades of classified SRI work — that UAP phenomena involve non-human intelligence of uncertain origin and operating modality, potentially including ultraterrestrial entities rather than interstellar visitors. Puthoff distinguished between the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) and the ultraterrestrial hypothesis, arguing that the SRI data on remote viewing demonstrated a consciousness-environment interaction that was more consistent with an underlying reality structure unknown to physics than with simple interplanetary visitation.
UFO materials at Stanford: the Nolan/Vallée collection
Nolan disclosed in a 2024 interview with Jesse Michels on American Alchemy that he possesses recovered UAP materials stored in a locked bank safety deposit account. The materials were originally collected by Jacques Vallée, who had for years published his contact address so that witnesses across the country could mail him recovered fragments. Nolan performed spectroscopic and laboratory materials analysis that Vallée lacked capacity to conduct independently. Hal Puthoff, reached by telephone during the interview, confirmed that at least one sample had been received anonymously from a person claiming to be an Army officer who discovered it in a grandfather's archives.
Nolan speculated that government programs may have recovered far more advanced UAP technology than independent researchers possess, suggesting that publicly available materials may represent peripheral debris — "maybe the stuff that we have somebody is sitting around saying laughably they're wasting their time on exhaust, we have the engine."
SETI and mainstream research
Stanford-affiliated researchers have contributed to mainstream SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) research, including work on directed panspermia, optical SETI methodologies, and the theoretical frameworks for recognizing technosignatures. The simultaneous presence at Stanford-adjacent institutions of both the classified SRI remote viewing program and the public SETI research program created a remarkable intellectual juxtaposition — with the classified program producing classified evidence of anomalous consciousness phenomena while the public program searched for conventional electromagnetic signals, the two efforts proceeding in parallel for over two decades.
