Jim McCarty (born 1947) is an American researcher, author, and co-founder of L-L Research, best known as the transcriptionist and co-facilitator of the Law of One channeling sessions conducted between 1981 and 1983. Together with Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert, McCarty formed the three-person team whose collaboration produced the five-volume The Law of One series — also called the Ra Material — one of the most widely cited channeled texts in exopolitics and consciousness research.
Background
McCarty was born in 1947 and was already engaged in spiritual and metaphysical study before joining L-L Research. In late 1980 he moved to Louisville, Kentucky to live with Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert, completing the three-person configuration that Ra — the sixth-density social memory complex that subsequently came through Rueckert's trance channel — would describe as essential to sustaining the contact.
Role in the Law of One
McCarty joined Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert at L-L Research in Louisville, Kentucky, shortly before the Ra contact began on January 15, 1981. During the 106 sessions, McCarty served as the scribe — meditating, maintaining the ritual conditions of the room, and transcribing everything Ra communicated through Rueckert's trance channel. His presence was considered essential to the energetic integrity of the contact; Ra specifically noted the importance of all three members' polarization in sustaining the communication link.
The contact employed a method Elkins had developed called tuned trance telepathy, in which the channel enters a very deep trance state and allows transmissions to pass through without conscious ego interference. McCarty's role was to record these transmissions verbatim while simultaneously holding the energetic and protective conditions of the session room — the precise placement of objects, candles, and incense that Ra specified as necessary for a clean contact.
The sessions ran from January 1981 through March 1983, a period David Wilcock later described as producing "the most authoritative and accurate telepathic communications about extraterrestrial life, human history and the evolution of consciousness ever received." Among the most significant disclosures in the Law of One were Ra's teachings on density structure — a seven-level cosmological model of consciousness evolution — on the concept of harvest and graduation between densities, on wanderers (ET souls incarnated in human bodies), and on the nature of service to others vs. service to self as the two primary paths of polarization.
Session 8, delivered January 26, 1981, was initially withheld from publication because its contents — including Ra's confirmation that human governments had already developed and were flying craft resembling unidentified flying objects — were too far outside Elkins' frame of reference. The session was eventually published in Book Five (1998) and is now freely available online.
After the Contact
Following Don Elkins' death in 1984 and Carla Rueckert's declining health in her final years, McCarty continued as the primary steward of L-L Research, editing and publishing the Law of One transcripts and maintaining the organization's archive and outreach activities. He remained at the Louisville homestead where the sessions had taken place.
McCarty co-authored A Wanderer's Handbook with Rueckert — a practical guide for ET souls navigating incarnation on Earth — and has been interviewed by numerous researchers working at the intersection of Law of One cosmology and exopolitics. He also co-authored Living the Law of One 101: The Choice with Rueckert, which distills the Ra sessions' ethical framework for a general audience.
Following Rueckert's death in 2015, McCarty became the sole surviving member of the original contact trio and continued to manage L-L Research's archives, publications, and outreach programs, including an annual gathering of Law of One students called the Homecoming conference held at the Louisville property.
Influence on Exopolitics
The Law of One material McCarty helped preserve has been extensively cited across the secret space program community. David Wilcock described his initial encounter with the books in 1996 as transformative, and later stated he spent years verifying Law of One scientific claims against research that postdated the sessions. Corey Goode claimed that the Law of One material was required reading for key groups in different secret space programs. The concept of wanderers described in the Ra sessions — souls from higher densities incarnating in third-density Earth to help with planetary graduation — has become a foundational framework within the SSP whistleblower community, with Corey Goode, David Wilcock, and others invoking it to explain why individuals with apparent prior ET memories volunteer for Earth incarnation.
Broader recognition
The channeling methodology used by the Law of One team has been independently referenced by researchers outside the original L-L Research circle. Biological anthropologist Michael Masters, in a conversation with Julian Dorey, described the Ra contact as one of several significant channeling bodies — alongside the Seth material and the Q'uo material — in which entities communicated consistent cosmological frameworks about density structure, polarization, and the nature of physical existence as a learning environment for consciousness.
Michael Salla has described the Ra material produced through Carla Rueckert's trance channel — with McCarty serving as scribe — as among the highest quality channeled texts available, placing it alongside the Only Planet of Choice by Phyllis Schlemmer and the Seth material by Jane Roberts as examples of channeling with "a high degree of accuracy."
