A non-human intelligent being (NHI being) or alien is an alleged intelligent being who is not human, usually described as non-terrestrial and an inherent part of the phenomenon. Non-human intelligent beings are the most popular hypothesized UFO occupants and a primary subject of ufology, exopolitics, and contactee research. Reported origins range from other celestial bodies and star systems, i.e., space aliens, to alternate dimensions, timelines, planes of existence and regions of conventional space–time hidden from surface humanity. The category spans physically embodied extraterrestrial visitors, interdimensional beings operating outside ordinary spacetime, cryptoterrestrials inhabiting hidden or unexplored regions of Earth, incorporeal beings and energy beings existing as pure consciousness, intelligent cryptids such as Sasquatch, and synthetic, non-biological, or programmed entities created by other species. The existence of such beings is a foundational tenet of ufology, exopolitics, and the broader study of the extraterrestrial reality, supported by close encounters, abduction cases, crash retrievals of exotic spacecraft, contactee communications, secret space program testimony, remote viewing data, and the ancient astronaut interpretation of archaeological evidence. Accounts of encounters with such beings appear in the traditions of every documented human culture — Vedic, Buddhist, Daoist, Islamic, Abrahamic, Indigenous American, African, and Celtic among them — and span all of recorded history. The subject is among the most contested in human knowledge, with the reality, nature, and intentions of these beings remaining matters of intense dispute among governments, researchers, experiencers, and the broader public.

The term is distinct from extraterrestrial being, which includes alleged extraterrestrial humans — biologically Homo sapiens populations originating from or residing on worlds other than Earth. Extraterrestrial humans are aliens in the geographic sense but are not non-human. By contrast, human-looking extraterrestrials — beings who closely resemble humans but belong to separate species, sometimes differing in organ count, skeletal structure, or reproductive compatibility — are non-human intelligent beings despite their superficial resemblance. Similarly, subterranean humans — such as the Anshar and Telosii — are not classified as non-human intelligent beings despite living beneath the Earth's surface. The concept is central to numerous conspiracy theories that suggest these beings play a hidden but significant role in the development of human civilization, technology, and culture, are being concealed by the powers-that-be, and are treated as real by a private civilization operating outside public oversight. Many different species of non-human intelligent beings in many communities have been alleged, ranging from Zeta Greys and Mantis beings to less anthropomorphic forms such as energy beings or non-biological entities.

The most common designations are alien (the dominant popular term), extraterrestrial or ET (assuming space-based origin), NHI or non-human intelligence (the origin-neutral government term adopted from 2023, appearing 26 times in the UAP Disclosure Act), EBE (the earliest US government classification from Majestic 12 documents), UFO occupant (the clinical research term used by Hynek, Vallée, and Sheehan), and ultraterrestrial (John Keel's term for beings sharing Earth's environment at frequencies beyond human perception). The shift from "ET" to "NHI" in official discourse reflects growing recognition that the phenomenon includes beings whose origin cannot be reduced to interstellar travel. Beyond these formal designations, Elena Danaan noted that "alien races" remained the most broadly recognizable human term even while acknowledging its imprecision, and alternative naming traditions include "Star People" (in indigenous and New Age discourse), "Visitors" (Whitley Strieber's preferred term), and "The Others" (used in some academic parapsychology). When Representative Anna Paulina Luna received a classified SCIF briefing on UAP programs, she described the material as showing "things out there that have not been created by mankind."

Scope and boundaries

The defining criterion is intelligence — the capacity for language, tool use, self-awareness, or organized social behavior. This distinguishes the subject from exotic animals or non-intelligent extraterrestrial life-forms, which fall outside the scope.

Categories included:

• Extraterrestrial beings — physically embodied intelligences originating from other star systems, operating primarily in three-dimensional spacetime. The largest documented category, encompassing Greys, reptilians, Nordics, insectoids, mantids, amphibians, and numerous humanoid phenotypes.
• Interdimensional beings — intelligences existing primarily outside the three-dimensional physical plane, sometimes identified with what religious traditions call angels or demons.
• Cryptoterrestrials — intelligences indigenous to Earth but concealed from surface humanity, including inner-Earth civilizations such as the Anshar and Telosii, as well as subterranean beings and Earth-native reptilians.
• Incorporeal beings — non-physical or energy-state intelligences, including the highest expressions of the Sphere Being Alliance, Blue Beings, Celestials, and other entities operating at sixth density and above.
• Intelligent cryptids — beings such as Sasquatch and related entities reported across cultures, whose intelligence is attested but whose biological classification remains undetermined.
• Synthetic and programmed beings — cloned worker drones, cybernetically integrated populations, and wholly inorganic entities created as servants by other species.
• Temporally displaced beings — entities that are temporally rather than spatially foreign, such as the P-52 Orions or the Anshar, documented through Contact with time travelers.

Excluded from this category:

• Extraterrestrial humans — biologically Homo sapiens populations living on other worlds, including human-looking beings such as the Ahel and Errahel. They are aliens geographically but not biologically non-human.
• Non-intelligent exotic fauna — extraterrestrial animals and extraterrestrial plants lacking organized intelligence.

Explanatory frameworks

Several competing frameworks attempt to account for the origin and nature of non-human intelligent beings. The extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) — the position that UFO occupants are physical beings traveling from other star systems — has been the dominant framework in ufology since the post-Roswell era. It posits that the beings traverse interstellar distances via advanced propulsion technologies, possibly including warp drive analogues or portal transit, and underpins most secret space program (SSP) testimony. Luis Elizondo of AATIP described receiving briefings from physicist Hal Puthoff on a unified theory that purportedly explained "how it's possible" for UAP craft to operate as described.

The interdimensional hypothesis (IDH) proposes that some beings originate in adjacent dimensions or frequency bands of reality rather than other star systems; proponents include Jacques Vallée, John Keel, and researchers within the Skinwalker Ranch investigations. The IDH accommodates phenomena the ETH struggles to explain, such as the reported ability of UAP to appear and disappear instantaneously or pass through solid matter. The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis suggests some beings may instead be indigenous to Earth — remnants of an ancient advanced civilization, inhabitants of Inner Earth, or a parallel branch of hominid evolution — a view Mac Tonnies developed most systematically before his death in 2009. The ultraterrestrial hypothesis holds that some reported entities may exist outside ordinary spacetime entirely, better described through parapsychology or consciousness studies than conventional physics.

Cross-cultural traditions

Accounts of non-human intelligent beings are not confined to modern Western ufology. Every major cultural and religious tradition documents encounters with intelligences understood as non-human, under locally specific names and cosmological frameworks.

John Keel proposed that these traditions describe not random visitors from distant stars but a resident intelligence sharing Earth's electromagnetic environment — "ultraterrestrials" capable of manifesting in any form, whose appearances across history have been interpreted through the cultural lens of each era: as angels in Biblical times, as fairies in medieval Europe, and as spacefaring extraterrestrials in the modern age. John Mack reached a convergent conclusion through clinical work with over two hundred experiencers: indigenous cultures, in which "the spiritual and material worlds" are not rigidly separated, integrate encounters with "star people" naturally into their cosmology, while Western culture struggles to classify the same phenomena because it insists on a strict division between physical and spiritual. Charles Fort, the earliest systematic compiler of anomalous data, proposed that Earth and its inhabitants are "property" — owned or managed by non-human intelligences whose occasional visible manifestations constitute only a fraction of their actual activity.

Classification frameworks

No unified taxonomy exists. Several parallel classification frameworks are used across exopolitics, contactee traditions, religious cosmology, and channelled material, each addressing different aspects of the subject: ontological origin (extraterrestrial, interdimensional, subterranean, temporally displaced, non-corporeal), phenotype (humanoid, Grey, reptiloid, insectoid, amphibian, plasma/energetic), density level, alignment, civilizational stage as defined by the Galactic Federation of Worlds' Prime Directive, and consciousness structure (individuated, interfaced, or hive-mind). The same entity may be simultaneously classifiable as a phenotypic Grey, a fourth-density being, a Stage 3 civilization, and a hive-mind culture, with none of these labels contradicting the others.

Published catalogues document hundreds of distinct species: A Gift from the Stars covers over 110 species, while the Encyclopedia Galactica Volume I extends this with additional civilizations. The Disclosure Project Briefing Document compiles testimony from over 100 military and government witnesses confirming the reality of extraterrestrial civilizations and the retrieval of their craft.

Contact and abduction literature describes dozens of allegedly distinct non-human species. Elena Danaan's A Gift from the Stars catalogues over 100 species with morphological descriptions, home systems, and purported disposition toward humanity. Frequently reported types include:

• Greys — The most commonly reported type in Western abduction literature. Short, large-cranium beings with large dark eyes and greyish skin, associated with abductions, implants, and alleged hybridization programs. In Danaan's taxonomy, multiple Grey species exist — the Zeta Reticulans, the Solipsi Rai, and others — representing a convergent body type across multiple evolutionary lineages.
• Reptilians — Tall, bipedal reptilian beings reported across contact traditions. In Danaan's taxonomy, the dominant reptilian group is the Draco reptilians, a reportedly warlike empire based in the Alpha Draconis system. Reptilian entities are also described by Stewart Swerdlow, Alex Collier, and various indigenous traditions.
• Pleiadians — Humanoid beings reportedly from the Pleiades star cluster, one of the most widely reported benevolent species in channeling and contact traditions. Prominent Pleiadian communicators include Semjase (contacted by Billy Meier) and the Taygetan delegation described by Elena Danaan.
• Tall Whites — A species described by Charles Hall from his reported experiences at Nellis Air Force Base, characterized as tall, pale humanoids allegedly present under a long-standing arrangement with the U.S. Air Force.
• Nordics — Tall, blonde, humanoid beings reported across European and American contact literature from the 1950s onward, often described as benevolent. Nordics were among the first species described by early contactees such as George Adamski and Howard Menger.
• Mantids (Insectoids) — Tall, praying mantis-like beings reported in abduction accounts, often described as playing a supervisory role during procedures allegedly performed by Greys. Notable in accounts by Whitley Strieber and Jim Sparks.

Non-human intelligent beings do not conform to a single biological template. Carbon-based humanoids, cold-blooded reptiloid species, silicon-adjacent crystalline life-forms, insectoid hive organisms, mantid intelligences, aquatic amphibians, and plasma-state entities have all been catalogued. Biochemistry splits broadly between warm-blooded humanoid carbon life-forms and cold-blooded reptiloid species, though many beings cross these categories. Reproductive strategies range from sexual reproduction to egg-laying, cloning, and wholly artificial conception. Lifespans vary by orders of magnitude, from mortal spans to the 600–800-year lifetimes reported for the Tall Whites. Height and stature vary from the diminutive Zeta Greys to the towering Tall Greys. Dietary requirements, clothing, and personal artifacts differ radically across species. A significant sub-category comprises biosynthetic and engineered life-forms — cloned worker drones, cybernetically integrated populations, and wholly inorganic synthetic beings.

Culture and governance

Civilizations exhibit governance structures ranging from individuated democratic federations to totalitarian hive-mind collectives and dynastic empires. The Galactic Federation of Worlds operates as a representative body of several hundred member civilizations. The Alpha Draconian Empire functions as a hierarchical military monarchy. The Nebu Collective and the Orion Grey Collective operate as hive-mind systems in which individual autonomy is subordinated to collective direction. The Intergalactic Confederation, a body of civilizations from beyond the Milky Way, includes members at the highest documented density levels. The Alliance of the Six and Andromeda Council represent additional interstellar political bodies. Communication, emotionality, spirituality, and cultural practices vary enormously across civilizations.

Interaction with humanity

Interaction between non-human intelligences and Earth civilizations predates recorded history. Ancient traditions across Sumer, Egypt, the Vedic world, and the Americas describe beings from the sky shaping early human societies — the Anunnaki in Mesopotamian texts, the devas and asuras in Indian scripture, the star people in Native American oral tradition. The Anunnaki are identified in Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hebrew texts as the "gods" who conducted genetic modifications of early hominids.

In the modern era, interaction is documented through contactee accounts, abductee testimony, secret space program service, remote viewing sessions, official government encounters, and crash retrieval programs. Formal agreements between human governments and non-human civilizations — such as the Greada Treaty and the Eisenhower alien meetings — are described in multiple independent testimonies. David Grusch testified under oath before the United States Congress in the 2023 UAP Congressional Hearing that the United States has recovered non-human intelligence craft and biologics. The Disclosure Project Briefing Document assembled over 100 military and government witnesses confirming that "we are indeed being visited by advanced extraterrestrial civilizations and have been for some time."

The number of people with direct knowledge of the non-human presence is estimated to be small relative to the global population. The subject is held in greater secrecy than even the development of the hydrogen bomb, according to the 1950 Wilbert Smith Canadian government memorandum cited in the Disclosure Project document. This secrecy is maintained through the UFO cover-up apparatus, including Majestic 12, legacy programs, and psychological operations. Steven Greer emphasizes that the secrecy persists not because the subject is trivial but because "its implications are so profound and far reaching" — the release of associated energy and propulsion technologies would transform the global economic and geopolitical order. The push for controlled disclosure and catastrophic disclosure remains a central tension in exopolitics.

In popular culture

The word "alien" carries strong science fiction associations — particularly from films such as Alien (1979), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Independence Day (1996). Steven Greer has argued that the Hollywood entertainment industry has been used to condition public fear of extraterrestrial contact, seeding imagery of hostile invasion rather than the benevolent or neutral contact described by most contactees. In UAP disinformation literature, "alien invasion" narratives are described as a potential false flag scenario — sometimes called Project Blue Beam — drawing on testimony from Wernher von Braun (as relayed by Carol Rosin) allegedly warning of manufactured external threats culminating in a staged alien invasion to justify space-based weapons.
