Grey alien (also spelled Grey alien, also uncapitalized) refers to a humanoid morphotype or phenotype of non-human intelligent beings characterized by a large rounded hairless head, large black almond-shaped eyes, a relatively small mouth, a slender frame, and sometimes four fingers. The archetype entered public consciousness through the 1961 Barney and Betty Hill abduction in New Hampshire, and was cemented as the dominant extraterrestrial image by the 1987 cover of Whitley Strieber's bestseller Communion. Alleged contactees and witnesses have described several generally-unrelated but morphologically similar species. Grey aliens were supposedly among the beings recovered in various UFO crash retrievals including those recovered from the Roswell incident.

Research by Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs, and Karla Turner established a recurring pattern of physical evidence — scoop marks, tissue samples, reproductive interference — across thousands of independent abduction accounts; Dr. Roger Leir's implant research further documented physical objects reportedly recovered from abductees. The Grey is the archetypal image of an extraterrestrial being, alien, or non-terrestrial intelligent being in popular culture and the dominant trope of late-twentieth-century abductee and some contactee accounts.

Physical description

The canonical Grey morphology includes a head disproportionately large relative to body size; large, wrap-around eyes that are uniformly dark with no visible sclera; a small vestigial nose; a lipless horizontal mouth; a thin elongated neck; and a torso and limbs described as skeletal. Height reportedly ranges from approximately 3.5 feet (short worker-type Greys) to 5–6 feet (tall command-type Greys). The skin is typically described as grey, pale grey, or blue-grey. Some accounts describe a translucent nictitating membrane rather than eyelids. Digits number three to four in most accounts, occasionally five. The entity depicted in the Skinny Bob footage is consistent with this morphology and is internally labelled as from the Zeta Reticuli system, independently identified by Campobasso as the original homeworld of both EBEs and Grey races.

Campobasso distinguishes three Grey size classifications: Short Greys (four to five feet with gray skin and "large, dark, bulbous eyes" that "wrap around their heads"), Tall Greys (six to eight and a half feet with elongated heads and protruding insect eyes reportedly concealing "huge human-like eyes" behind nictitating membrane lenses), and Taller Greys (nine to twelve feet with "more human" muscular frames and "facial skin crinkled like crepe paper"). The Short Greys are described as having "lost their spiritual nature over time from inbreeding, cloning, and their pursuit of technology" and as "desperately trying to regain" their connection to Spirit. Campobasso states that "through powerful mind telepathy, they can control and paralyze humans" and that "they place screen memories in the minds of those they have abducted" — and that "due to the electromagnetic energy enhancements programmed into their auras," Greys can reportedly "tune their frequency to become invisible and walk through walls."

Campobasso also separately catalogues purportedly benevolent Zeta Reticulans — a variation with "slight bodies about four feet tall," three long fingers with an extra joint, and "huge round irises and pupils colored blue, green, brown, steel blue, or violet." These beings, described as hermaphroditic and members of a benevolent galactic alignment, allegedly possess technology to "rewire neural patterns to increase brain function in their contactees" and maintain "Earth museums from the beginning of time, showcasing human and extraterrestrial life."

Greys are alleged by Michael Wolf Kruvante to have soft, dolphin-like skin and — like dolphins on Earth — to respond to physical touch as a primary expression of affection. According to Wolf Kruvante via Paola Harris and journalist Chris Stonor, the highly evolved Greys he worked with reportedly enjoyed hugging and kissing their human colleagues to the extent that one scientist nicknamed them "kissey facey."

Both Grey-type beings and Tall Whites are allegedly strictly plant eaters — "the Tall Whites and the Grays do not eat meat, they're only plant eaters" — a dietary restriction noted as shared across both species by Charles Hall based on his direct observations at Nellis Air Force Base (Area 51) in the 1960s.

Origins and Grey species

Reported homeworlds

According to Michael Wolf, the Greys originate on Reticulum Four, the fourth planet of the binary star system Zeta Reticuli. They are referred to in alleged government treaty documents as "Reticulians." The association between Grey aliens and Zeta Reticuli in mainstream ufology originated with schoolteacher Marjorie Fish's 1969 interpretation of a star map Betty Hill had drawn under hypnosis after the 1961 abduction; Fish modeled the drawing and determined the marked home system to be the binary Zeta Reticuli.

Selected species in detail:

History of the archetype

Literary and occult precursors (1893–1933)

In 1893, H. G. Wells described humanity's future appearance in the article "The Man of the Year Million" as having no mouths, noses, or hair, and large heads; in 1895 he depicted the Eloi in similar terms in The Time Machine. Both share many characteristics with later perceptions of Greys.

Crowley's drawing of "Lam", the entity he believed he was in contact with

As early as 1917, the occultist Aleister Crowley described a meeting with a "preternatural entity" named Lam that was similar in appearance to a modern Grey. Crowley claimed to have contacted Lam through a process called the "Amalantrah Workings," which he believed allowed humans to contact beings from outer space and across dimensions. Other occultists and ufologists, many of whom have retroactively linked Lam to later Grey encounters, have since described their own visitations from him, with one describing the being as a "cold, computer-like intelligence," and utterly beyond human comprehension.

"...the creatures did not resemble any race of humans. They were short, shorter than the average Japanese, and their heads were big and bald, with strong, square foreheads, and very small noses and mouths, and weak chins. What was most extraordinary about them were the eyes — large, dark, gleaming, with a sharp gaze. They wore clothes made of soft grey fabric, and their limbs seemed to be similar to those of humans."

Gustav Sandgren, The Unknown Danger (1933)

In 1933, the Swedish novelist Gustav Sandgren, under the pen name Gabriel Linde, published the science-fiction novel Den okända faran (The Unknown Danger), whose illustrated depiction of short, bald, large-dark-eyed extraterrestrials in soft grey fabric would become the template upon which the popular image of Greys is based.

Roswell (1947) and Aztec (1948)

Grey-type beings feature centrally in the post-1978 reconstruction of the 1947 Roswell UFO incident: a number of publications beginning with Berlitz and Moore's 1980 The Roswell Incident contain statements from individuals who claimed to have seen U.S. military personnel handling unusually proportioned, bald, child-sized beings with oversized heads and slanted eyes but scant other distinguishable facial features. Similar descriptions appeared in accounts of the 1948 Aztec UFO hoax.

Barney and Betty Hill abduction (1961)

The conception remained a niche one until 1965, when newspaper reports of the Betty and Barney Hill abduction made the archetype famous. The alleged abductees, Betty and Barney Hill, claimed that in 1961, humanoid alien beings with grayish skin had abducted them and taken them aboard a flying saucer.

In his 1990 article "Entirely Unpredisposed", Martin Kottmeyer argued that Barney's memories revealed under hypnosis may have been influenced by an episode of the science-fiction television show The Outer Limits titled "The Bellero Shield", broadcast 12 days before Barney's first hypnotic session and featuring a wraparound-eyed extraterrestrial. Carl Sagan echoed Kottmeyer's suspicions in his 1997 book The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, adding Invaders from Mars as another potential inspiration.

Diffusion into folklore (1965–present)

After the Hills' encounter, Greys became an integral part of ufology and extraterrestrial-related folklore. According to journalist C. D. B. Bryan, Greys make up about 50% of reported alien encounters in Australia, 73% in the United States, 48% in continental Europe, and around 12% in the United Kingdom, with reports including two distinct height groups.

A Grey as popularized from the cover of Communion by Whitley Strieber; the portrait was painted by Ted Seth Jacobs to Strieber's description and approval.

In 1987, novelist Whitley Strieber published Communion, categorized — unlike his previous works — as non-fiction, describing a number of close encounters Strieber alleged he had experienced with Greys and other extraterrestrial beings. The book became a New York Times bestseller, and New Line Cinema released a 1989 film adaptation starring Christopher Walken as Strieber. The cover portrait became the single most recognisable image of an extraterrestrial in twentieth-century popular culture.

In 1988, Christophe Dechavanne interviewed the French ufologist Jimmy Guieu on TF1's Ciel, mon mardi!, where Guieu described "the little greys" — later better known in French as les Petits-Gris — alongside Majestic 12 material. Guieu later wrote two docudramas using the Grey aliens / Majestic-12 theory as framed by John Lear and Milton William Cooper: the "E.B.E." (for "Extraterrestrial Biological Entity") series E.B.E.: Alerte rouge (1990) and E.B.E.: L'entité noire d'Andamooka (1991).

Greys subsequently became the subject of many conspiracy theories. Some hold that Greys represent a government-led disinformation or plausible deniability campaign, or that they are a product of government mind-control experiments. During the 1990s, popular culture also began to increasingly link Greys to military-industrial complex and New World Order theories.

In 1995, filmmaker Ray Santilli claimed to have obtained 22 reels of 16 mm film depicting the autopsy of a "real" Grey supposedly recovered from the 1947 Roswell site. In 2006, Santilli announced that the released film was not original but a "reconstruction" created after the original footage had allegedly degraded, maintaining that a real Grey had been found and autopsied on camera in 1947 and that the released footage contained a percentage of the original.

Temperament and social behaviour

Greys are variously described as kind, fun-loving, and spiritually advanced, and as weirdly mechanical and dissociated from their human subjects. Michael Wolf characterized his Grey associate Kolta as possessing "incredible spirituality" and interacting with humans with "gracious caring."

According to Wolf Kruvante via Chris Stonor, the Greys reportedly maintain an active trading relationship with so-called "Orange" extraterrestrials from the Andromeda galaxy — a form of exchange distinct from the terrestrial conception of commerce: "Trading has a different meaning for ETs. They share knowledge like technology and philosophy and send their people to each other's planet to learn the culture."

Communication and mental abilities

Telepathy is reportedly the primary mode of Grey communication. Greys do not articulate words with their membrane-type mouths; instead, the recipient allegedly hears a clear voice inside the mind as though the Grey were speaking aloud. This is referred to as "thought throwing" — directed mental transmission of information from one mind to another.

According to Wolf, Greys use a substantially greater proportion of their brains than humans, who typically operate at approximately 10 to 15 percent capacity. A fully utilised brain is theoretically capable of directing internal or external free energy as a weapon; during the 1975 S-4 firefight, all 43 human fatalities reportedly died of head wounds with no visible alien weapon, suggesting the Greys may have directed lethal mental energy in self-defence. This expanded neural capacity also allegedly enables time and space manipulation, the ability to walk through matter, mind reading, and the levitation of humans without physical instrumentalities.

Hive mind and individuation

Most Grey species are reported to operate through a hive-mind or collective-consciousness structure rather than individuated personalities. Elena Danaan's A Gift from the Stars account of her 1987 childhood abduction describes the Solipsi Rai who abducted her as acting "so weirdly mechanical" with "no consideration" for her as a person — "I was just like a piece of meat. They think we have no soul, that we are so inferior to them." A larger, supervisory Grey present during the abduction appeared "more expressive, as if he was a real person and the others some sort of robots, or clones, or organic machines" — a distinction consistent with the command-hierarchy in which Tall Greys direct shorter drone-types.

The Udu — a pacifist Grey hive collective from the F-65 star system — illustrate that not all hive-consciousness Greys are adversarial: the Udu are members of the Galactic Federation of Worlds, with their fleet value lying precisely in coordinated hive movement.

The question of whether Greys are biological organisms in the conventional sense, cybernetic constructions, or some hybrid of the two has recurred in mainstream UAP commentary. On The Joe Rogan Experience #1315, filmmaker Jeremy Corbell characterised at least some encountered Greys as cybernetic organisms — biological tissue integrated with engineered systems rather than naturally evolved beings. Joe Rogan, in the same exchange, framed the open question as whether the entities are "actually living things or whether they were created" — an explicit engineered-vs.-evolved distinction. The framing parallels the programmed life form hypothesis, in which apparent Greys are understood as bioengineered constructions with integrated electronics rather than independently evolved extraterrestrial biology.

Mortality and vulnerability

Most species of visiting extraterrestrials are reportedly mortal. Greys' home atmospheres and weather conditions are controlled; Earth's uncontrolled atmosphere — with its unpredictable winds, jet stream, and turbulence — allegedly presents a navigational hazard, and Grey conveyances reportedly occasionally crash and burn. According to Wolf, lead is acutely toxic to Grey physiology; a bullet wound will reportedly kill a Grey from lead poisoning before the wound itself proves fatal. Kolta, a Grey navigator allegedly shot by a soldier after straying into a restricted zone near a crash site in New Mexico, reportedly survived only because Dr. Michael Wolf and surgeon Dr. Candace Ryan removed the lead bullet in time; Kolta's crewmates from the same crash had already been taken by government scientists for autopsy.

Abduction phenomenon

Abduction claims, documented by researchers Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs, and Karla Turner from the 1980s onward, allegedly present consistent patterns across thousands of independent accounts: paralysis, levitation through closed surfaces (abductees passing through windows or walls described as "gelatinous"), transport aboard craft, medical procedures on examination tables, and physical marks left on the body afterward. Such claims are often described as extremely traumatic, comparable in reported emotional impact to combat, sexual abuse, and other severe traumatic events. The eyes are often a focus of abduction claims, which describe a Grey staring into the eyes of an abductee when conducting mental procedures; this staring is claimed to induce hallucinogenic states or provoke different emotions.

Campobasso describes the abduction program as driven by genetic hybridization to stave off species extinction, with Greys approximately 2,000 years ahead of humanity technologically. Hopkins described one documented case in which an abductee, Peter Khoury of Australia, was awakened to find two female entities — one with hair that "didn't quite look human" — and recovered a strand of hair analyzed as genetically anomalous by a Nobel laureate geneticist.

Physical evidence recorded by Hopkins includes scoop marks — oval depressions in the skin from which a layer of cells has been removed with no bleeding and very rapid healing — appearing on abductees across multiple countries in consistent anatomical locations. Hopkins argued the phenomenon is the opposite of a cult: "We have all these miracles and we have no theory. We have no theology."

Loosh and adrenochrome harvesting

Alex Collier, drawing on information from his Andromedan Council contacts Morenae and Vissaeus, describes Reptilian and Grey beings allegedly present at underground facilities — including Dulce — purportedly farming human fear as a narcotic substance (loosh): "Our fear... is actually a narcotic, a drug for these extraterrestrials." At Dulce, Greys reportedly absorbed blood from vats containing human remains by applying it to their skin: "Their bodies would absorb the fluid."

In government programs

Dan Burisch uses the designation "J-Rod" for the beings commonly called Greys — "when you view or observe, ah, what would be called a Gray... what I would call a J-Rod."

Grey-type beings feature centrally in alleged Majestic 12 treaties and agreements: the 1954 meeting between President Eisenhower and Grey representatives allegedly resulted in a technology-exchange agreement permitting limited abductions of human civilians in exchange for advanced technology. Laura Eisenhower, great-granddaughter of the President, describes the Greada Treaty as only the most-publicised part of a far longer history of US-ET contact: "There is so much more to the story than you can imagine... it went beyond just the United States, particularly during the Second World War."

Bill Uhouse, a former Marine fighter pilot reassigned to simulator development, allegedly spent over 30 years at S-4 building a flying disc flight simulator modelled on the craft from the 1953 Kingman UFO crash; Uhouse described the Kingman landing as controlled, with the occupants intending to present the craft to the US government.

The Greada Treaty reportedly permitted limited abductions in exchange for technology; the Solipsi Rai allegedly violated it by conducting abductions "far in excess of authorized numbers." The treaty additionally reportedly generated an "Above Top Secret" UN ruling prohibiting any Zeta from walking openly in public.

Hierarchy within the occupying forces

Within the adversarial forces allegedly occupying Earth prior to 2021, Greys reportedly occupied the middle tiers of command — categorised by Campobasso as operating in "service to self." Per Danaan's A Gift from the Stars, Reptilians from Thuban — the Draco reptilians and Nagai — allegedly commanded Earth-based reptilians; the Maytrei (Tall Greys) and Mantis (Insectoids) commanded below them; the Solipsi Rai and their cloned technicians formed the lowest operational tier. The key to overcoming these adversarial races, according to Thor Han Eredyon, reportedly lies not in military force but in elevating human consciousness: "the best way to fight the reptilian races, be they Draco reptilians, Nagai, Dohu, Maytra, Zetan Xrog and all the rest, is to step up to a higher level of consciousness."

Origin of the Reptilian-Grey alliance

Collier's Andromedan contacts also allegedly provided an account of the Reptilian-Grey alliance's ultimate cosmic origin: that a faction from another multiverse — whose artificial intelligence had purportedly taken over — was "dumped" into this galaxy by unknown parties who preferred to relocate them rather than exterminate them, giving them a chance to survive and start again in a less-populated region of the universe. Collier regarded this as "extremely irresponsible" to humanity and other civilisations here, which were unprepared to deal with the arriving species.

Skeptical analysis

Neurologist Steven Novella has proposed that Grey aliens are a byproduct of the human imagination, with the Greys' most distinctive features representing everything that modern humans traditionally link with intelligence: "The aliens, however, do not just appear as humans, they appear like humans with those traits we psychologically associate with intelligence."

In 2005, Frederick V. Malmstrom, writing in Skeptic magazine, presented his "Mother Hypothesis": that Greys are residual memories of early-childhood development, reconstructing the face of a Grey through transformation of a mother's face based on early-childhood sensation and perception. Malmstrom offered this as an alternative explanation for the instinctive recognition response many people experience when presented an image of a Grey, and for the role of regression hypnosis and recovered-memory therapy in "recovering" abduction narratives with common themes.

According to biologist Jack Cohen, the typical image of a Grey, assuming that it would have evolved from a world with different environmental and ecological conditions from Earth, is too physiologically similar to a human to be credible as a representation of an alien.

The interdimensional hypothesis, the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis, and the time-traveller hypothesis each offer alternative explanations to the broadly humanoid anatomy and behaviour of the alleged beings.

In popular culture

Depictions of Grey aliens have appeared in many films and television shows, supplanting the previously popular little green men. As early as 1966, the superhero character Ultraman was explicitly based on them, and in 1977 they were featured in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Greys have also been worked into space opera and other interstellar settings: in Babylon 5, the Greys are referred to as the "Vree", and are depicted as allies and trade partners of 23rd-century Earth, while in the Stargate franchise they are called the "Asgard" and depicted as ancient astronauts. South Park refers to them as "visitors".

During the 1990s, plotlines wherein Greys were linked to conspiracy theories became common. A well-known example is the Fox television series The X-Files (first aired 1993), which combined the quest to prove the existence of Grey-like extraterrestrials with a number of UFO conspiracy theory subplots to form its primary story arc; other notable examples include the XCOM video game franchise (where they are called "Sectoids"), Dark Skies (first broadcast 1996, expanding on the MJ-12 conspiracy), and American Dad!, which features a Grey-like alien named Roger whose backstory draws from both the Roswell incident and Area 51 conspiracy theories.

The 2011 film Paul tells the story of a Grey named Paul who attributes the Greys' frequent presence in science-fiction pop culture to the US government deliberately inserting the stereotypical Grey image into mainstream media, so that if humanity came into contact with Paul's species no immediate shock would occur. Child abduction by Greys is a key plot point in the 2013 film Dark Skies. Greys appear in Syfy's 2021 dramedy series Resident Alien, and as the main antagonistic faction in the 2023 independent game Greyhill Incident.
