Bose electromagnetic car suspension
The Bose electromagnetic active suspension system was a high-performance automotive ride control technology developed between 1980 and 2004 at Bose Corporation by founder Amar Bose and a small engineering team at MIT. The system replaced conventional spring-and-damper suspension with electromagnetic linear motors at each wheel, capable of actively counteracting road inputs in real time, and was publicly demonstrated in 2004. The project was subsequently shelved without entering production.
Technical description
The Bose active suspension replaced every passive spring, shock absorber, and anti-roll bar with a linear electromagnetic actuator — a device directly analogous to a voice-coil motor — at each wheel. The actuator could push or pull the wheel relative to the car body with great speed and force, controlled by a signal processor analysing road surface data from accelerometers at up to 100 times per second.
The demonstrated performance in 2004 was startling:
- The car body remained essentially level through sharp turns with no roll.
- Driving over a curb at speed produced no vertical motion at the body level — the wheel simply dropped and returned.
- Potholes and bumps were absorbed entirely before the impulse reached the passenger compartment.

The electromagnetic actuators could switch between absorbing energy (acting as generators) and inputting energy (acting as motors) within milliseconds. Net energy consumption across a drive cycle was claimed to be comparable to a conventional passive suspension, because energy absorbed from bumps was regenerated and returned to the vehicle's electrical system.

Despite a successful 2004 public demonstration in a modified Lexus sedan — with footage circulated widely on the internet — Bose Corporation never commercially licensed or productized the suspension. Amar Bose stated in interviews that the technology was ready but that automotive manufacturers were not willing to pay the cost premium, and that the company had decided not to spin out an automotive division.
