S-4 or S4 (also known as Site Four, Sector Four, or the Papoose facility) is an alleged classified underground installation built into the slope of Papoose Mountain at Papoose Lake, approximately 12 miles south of Area 51 (Groom Lake), inside the Nevada Test and Training Range. The facility allegedly housed at least nine non-human craft from 1958 through at least the mid-1990s, in individual hangar bays with sloped, sand-textured doors designed to blend into the hillside. Below the hangar level, multiple subterranean floors allegedly contain a pressurized clean sphere habitat, biological research laboratories, a Looking Glass device, and MJ-12 support infrastructure. S-4 operates under a separate clearance regime from Area 51; Groom Lake security personnel are not permitted to set foot on Papoose ground, and the two installations function as administratively distinct entities despite their geographic proximity. The facility has been independently described by Bob Lazar (1988-1989), Bill Uhouse (1950s-1980s), Dan Burisch (1990-2003), and Stephen Chua (1980s), among others. In a 2003 FOIA request citing "Area 51 (S-4)," the CIA issued a Glomar response, stating it could "neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of records."
Physical layout
Location

S-4 is located off the eastern shore of Papoose dry lake, approximately 13 miles south of Area 51 (Groom dry lake). There is a teardrop feature on the dry lakebed; S-4 is approximately 900 feet off the lakebed, where the desert floor meets the hillside.

Surface level: hangar bays
The surface level of S-4 consists of nine hangar bays built directly into the slope of Papoose Mountain.
The hangar doors are set at approximately 30-60 degree angle against the hillside and coated with a sand-colored material matching the texture of the surrounding desert environment; Bob Lazar described running his hand across the surface on his first visit and finding the texture and construction "really weird" and visually reminiscent of a James Bond film set. A synthetic tarmac area was present outside the hangar doors. As the bus pulled up to the facility, it would drive past the row of nine camouflaged hangar doors before turning 90 degrees to the left and pulling up to the pedestrian entrance. Once Lazar was dropped off at the pedestrian entrance, he would go inside a double-door-type entry and bypass the front security desk to reach a hand scanner; once the scanner verified his identity, a card authorizing access to specific locations within S-4 would be dispensed.
Several of the camouflaged hangar doors appear visible in this overhead shot
The bay doors could be opened between adjacent hangars; on one occasion all nine interior bay doors were opened simultaneously, allowing a view through the entire row.
Beneath the hangar doors, a diagnostic working area extended forward and underneath the prefabricated slope doors, projecting out in front of the mountain face. Dan Burisch noted that this area -- designated 401 -- was absent from Bob Lazar's published descriptions of the facility, speculating it may have been held back as a verification detail.
The hangar level was also designated the Galileo Bay (labeled 4-1 and 4-1A/4-1B), with sections dedicated to avionics work, propulsion research, and weapons R&D. A device called Sidekick was originally located on the first floor behind the avionics section, adjacent to the nine bays where the discs were stored. According to Bob Lazar, Project Sidekick ran alongside Project Galileo and concerned the weapons potential of the craft -- specifically whether a gravity generator could act as a lens to focus a particle-beam weapon.
Subterranean levels
Diagram of the S-4 facility, attributed to Marcia McDowell.
Layout of S-4 Level 1, from Michael Schratt's Project Aquarius report for Open Minds (2010).
Below the hangar bays, the facility extends several floors underground. Caps were placed over the floor numbers on the elevator panels to prevent personnel from determining how many levels the facility contained. The elevator system included both standard closing doors and lift doors (rising from the floor) at the biological containment levels, the latter designed to make pressure leaks easier to detect since gravity would pull any contaminant downward rather than sideways.
The composite layout, drawing on accounts from Bob Lazar, Dan Burisch, Bill Uhouse, and researcher Michael Schratt, includes the following known areas:
- Level 1 (Hangar/Craft level): The nine hangar bays holding recovered craft, along with the Galileo Bay propulsion laboratory and avionics workspaces.
- Level 1B: The S-4 disc flight simulator, constructed by Bill Uhouse and his engineering team, designed to convert the alien craft's metric avionics into instrumentation familiar to terrestrial pilots.
- Level 2: The Project Looking Glass device, ARVs (alien reproduction vehicles), a Sidekick device, and weapons research and development facilities. Items under tarpaulin covers were also present on this level.
- Level 3: Housing and support facilities for Majestic 12 personnel, including briefing rooms and administrative areas.
- Level 4 (Biological laboratories): A tiered biological containment system running from Biosafety Level 1 through BL-4, with the highest-containment "cabinet laboratory" designated for work on extraterrestrial biological material -- specifically J-Rod tissue samples. A sign reading "PRETEND" was posted at the transition between BL-3 and BL-4, a sardonic reference to the pretense of leaving one facility when in fact one was simply rounding a corner into an adjacent lab. A badge board tracked personnel locations on this level.
- Level 5 (Ambassadorial suite and clean sphere): A pressurized clean sphere habitat for Chi'el'ah (J-Rod), with an observation gallery above. The clean sphere itself was stored below the ambassadorial suite level and raised through an iris in the floor when needed. A viewing gallery above the suite allowed supervisory observation of clean sphere operations.
Interior features and atmosphere
Composite diagram of the alleged S-4 facility — including the Looking Glass device configurations and stargate access units — from the Project Aquarius document.
The walls and floors throughout the facility were cement gray, with a large orange stripe painted at approximately waist height along the corridors. The facility was kept extremely cool, which Burisch noted worked well for him as someone who preferred cold environments.
The surveillance system combined two generations of camera technology. Extending "snail-eye" cameras -- late 1960s to early 1970s vintage -- would project outward from beveled wall panels near the ceiling, rotate to scan the work area, then retract into the wall. Alongside these, 1980s-era rotating cameras provided updated coverage, indicating at least one cycle of surveillance upgrades.
Several idiosyncratic decorations were noted within the facility. A white rabbit statue was placed above the Looking Glass device -- an apparent Alice in Wonderland reference. A sign reading "Cooking for Nevada" hung above the food storage and service area, where supply boxes were arranged on the floor in the geographic shape of the state of Nevada. Burisch attributed these quirks to the psychological pressure of working under extreme security: "weird rituals that go on in these SAP facilities that you wouldn't think would happen... maybe it's insanity under the pressure of the security."
Access and transportation
Personnel traveling to S-4 followed two documented routes. Bob Lazar described departing from a special projects EG&G building at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, boarding a JANET Boeing 737 (unmarked except for a red stripe and cockpit number details), flying to Groom Lake, then transferring to a bus with blacked-out windows for the approximately 15-20 minute drive south to S-4 on a road that transitioned from paved to dirt.
Former SR-71 pilot Captain David Fruehauf independently described Lazar's route before his death, recounting that a small group of employees would board an unmarked bus to drive south toward Papoose Lake.
Dan Burisch used an alternative route for most of his tenure. Rather than the bus, he traveled in a van nicknamed the "Cannonball Express," driven at high speed over washboard dirt roads between Groom Lake and S-4. On some occasions he was transported by helicopter. Tarpaulin fences on berms along the pull-out area near the Galileo Bay prevented incoming personnel from seeing Papoose Lake itself, further obscuring the facility's geographic orientation.
For the JANET flights themselves, Burisch described being seated in the rear of the aircraft behind a drape separating him from Groom Lake engineers seated forward -- "You're here, they're there, and never the twain shall meet." The PA system played Neil Diamond's "Coming to America" on a continuous loop during the flights. The pilot's call sign to Groom ground control was "Pyramid."
Security
S-4 operated as what Bill Uhouse called "a separate country" entirely outside normal United States government authority, with its own rules, laws, and permanent monitoring of all personnel. The security force, known as the Black S's, wore all-black uniforms with black berets and carried compact automatic weapons. Burisch believed they held a United States Navy affiliation but was uncertain of any further organizational identity. When the Black S's changed shifts, they performed a precise changing-of-the-guard ceremony reminiscent of the honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier -- walking a designated line with an extremely smooth gait, meeting their replacement, executing a turn-about, and separating.
Camera incident and weighing origin
Before personnel weighing was in effect, Bob Lazar smuggled a small 110-format camera into the facility by concealing it in the hollow leg of a work chair, intending to photograph the craft and retrieve it on a later visit. According to John Lear, who discussed the incident with Lazar directly, the camera was discovered by security; this discovery prompted S-4 to adopt the practice of weighing all personnel entering and leaving the facility to detect smuggled objects by weight differential.
Personnel protocols
Upon arrival, all personnel were required to strip out of their personal clothing and change into facility-issued jumpsuits ("jumpers") in the RN's office, though Bob Lazar may have been permitted to bypass this by his supervisor. The cement floors were cold, and booties were stored in the restroom; gaining permission to collect one's booties before changing required building rapport with the security staff over multiple visits.
Security was provided by a unit Burisch calls the "Black Seals" — not Navy SEALs from Special Warfare — stationed throughout the facility with automatic weapons. Blue and red lines were painted on the floors; personnel were required to stay inside the blue lines, and stepping outside the red lines while outside the facility would result in being shot. A movement protocol called "walking the line" required all personnel to follow designated floor paths to their assigned locations without deviation. Multiple armed guards were stationed per floor at various corridor positions, and an escort accompanied every individual at all times.
In the biological laboratories, weighing devices were embedded in the floor at each workstation. At the command "Gentlemen, hold," personnel would step onto their weighing pads, cross their hands in front of their bodies, and remain motionless in designated "safe positions" -- preformed plastic hand-prints on the bench surfaces -- while equipment was delivered by support staff ("bottle washers"). All glassware and plasticware was single-use.
The clearance level required for S-4 access was designated Majestic clearance, described as 38 levels above Q clearance. Civilian personnel at the facility served exclusively scientific functions, while military personnel filled only security roles; the ratio was "a small percentage of scientific to military personnel."
Compartmentalization
Strict compartmentalization governed all work at S-4. Bob Lazar's assignment was conducted in partnership with a single colleague he called "Barry" under a supervisor he called "Dennis Mariani," who headed the propulsion laboratory. Lazar could only exchange ideas with Barry and was explicitly forbidden from asking questions of anyone else, a protocol he described as destructive to scientific progress.
Burisch experienced a parallel compartmentalization regime. For several years, he was told the facility was called "Piute Mesa" rather than its actual name of Papoose, and was not informed of the true name until approximately the end of 1993. Even his initial exposure to the facility in 1990 was limited to the Galileo Bay, Looking Glass, and Sidekick for approximately one year; he was not brought to the biological levels until later in his assignment.
Craft inventory
Nine craft of different designs are stored in S-4's individual hangar bays. Shapes include the disc Lazar worked on (the "Sport Model"), one he called a "Jell-O mold" with rippled sides, and a very flat disc resembling a straw hat -- one of which appeared to have been struck by a projectile through its edge.
Burisch described Lazar's account of the Galileo Bay as accurate from his own observations: "I can tell that his story by evidence is accurate because of the accuracy of the Galileo Bay at S-4." He also described a small triangular craft resembling "black liquid mercury" which he nicknamed "the chocolate drop" — a smooth, cornerless object that appeared to hover above the floor without noise.
Sport Model
Main article:
Sport Model
The primary craft studied by Lazar, designated the Sport Model, occupied Bay 1; on the occasion he first saw it, a small American flag was affixed to its hull. The craft was approximately 52 feet in external diameter, with an interior of a single dark pewter color, no right angles -- every junction having a radius of curvature -- and was sized for occupants approximately half Lazar's height (he is 5'10"). All edges were rounded because a high-voltage electrical field appeared across most of the hull, with the sole exception of a small insulator ring immediately below the uppermost dome. Briefing documents stated that the craft originated from Zeta Reticuli 3, the third planet of the binary Zeta Reticuli system, approximately 37 light years from Earth. The reactor design, gravity amplifier propulsion mechanism, Omicron and Delta operating configurations, and gravitational lensing effects are described in the dedicated Sport Model article.
Other identified craft
Bay 3 reportedly held a craft recovered from the 1947 Roswell incident. Bay 4 held a P-52 Orion craft associated with the future-human beings studied under Project Aquarius. Bill Uhouse noted that the dimensions of the craft were built in metric units -- a 16-meter craft measured 58.32 feet, and a 10-meter craft measured approximately 32.95 feet -- and that precise dimensional accuracy was critical to successful simulator development.
Programs and operational history
1953: Kingman retrieval and J-Rod arrival
Chi'el'ah (J-Rod) was recovered from a craft that crashed near Kingman, Arizona in 1953 due to a physiological malfunction affecting the being's bio-interface with the craft. The being and the recovered craft were transferred to the Nevada Test Site, initially to Groom Lake, then to S-4, where the clean sphere habitat was established. The term "J-Rod" was a basing designation derived from Mayan and Egyptian numerology -- the "J" and rod symbol combining to mean 15, representing the number of light years from the being's point of origin.
1950s-1980s: Disc simulator and engineering programs
Bill Uhouse, a Marine Corps fighter pilot turned civilian avionics engineer, spent approximately 30 years at S-4 developing a flight simulator to train human pilots on alien disc technology. The simulator replicated the cockpit, avionics, and flight characteristics of the actual disc, paralleling how conventional flight simulators were developed alongside terrestrial aircraft such as the F-86, F-94, and F-102. Uhouse stated that no human pilot could step into an actual alien disc and fly it -- the avionics were so fundamentally different that the entire information display system had to be translated into familiar terrestrial instrument formats.
Uhouse's team worked directly with an entity he called "J-Rod" (also referred to as "General Rod" in some accounts), who served as a technical translator. Uhouse described presenting engineering questions to the being and finding it had the answers ready before the questions were fully formulated; it responded in English. The being wore ordinary shirt and pants rather than any specialized garment. At a meeting at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the 1970s, one of J-Rod's associates met with Edward Teller and a group of 18 scientists and engineers to answer technical questions regarding mathematical calculations for reverse engineering the acquired disc.
1975: Security incident
Main article:
1975 S-4 security incident
On May 1, 1975, during a demonstration of a small antimatter reactor, the head Grey alien asked Blue Beret guards to remove their rifles as a safety precaution against accidental discharge during energy emissions. When the guards refused, a Blue Beret opened fire and killed the Grey. The resulting response from the Greys killed two scientists and 41 military personnel. The incident was described by Michael Wolf, who served as chairman of Majestic 12's Alphacom Team.
Wolf's The Catchers of Heaven provides additional detail. The entities involved were designated "Reticulian Four" (abbreviated "Ret. Four"), and the demonstration involved bombarding a super-heavy element with protons inside the small anti-matter reactor to produce the 100 percent annihilation reaction — a power output far exceeding anything achievable by terrestrial nuclear weapons. The Grey performing the demonstration requested the removal of all rifles and especially the bullets, given the potential consequences of an accidental discharge during a display of such enormous energy; the security colonel refused. No alien weapon was ever seen; one guard was left alive, apparently to attest to the power the Greys possessed and the restraint they had shown in killing only a selected few. Wolf theorized that the Greys' brains themselves were the weapons, reasoning that a brain operating at full capacity could direct internal or external free energy with phenomenal force — consistent with the Greys' demonstrated abilities to manipulate gravity waves, walk through matter, and communicate telepathically. The scientists were killed, in Wolf's assessment, to demonstrate the catastrophic consequences of an unstable reaction involving that level of energy. The incident ended certain exchanges between the Greys and the United States government.
Majestic 12 oversight visits
Michael Wolf visited S-4 on multiple occasions as part of his role with Majestic 12's Alphacom Team, listing it alongside Wright-Patterson, Area 51, and underground facilities in Dulce, New Mexico. At some of these facilities Wolf observed autopsy tables fitted with tie-down straps, indicating specimens were being dissected while still alive.
1979: Security altercation
Main article:
1979 S-4 security altercation
According to briefing documents provided to Bob Lazar at S-4, an incident occurred in 1979 during a period when live aliens were present at the facility as part of an information-exchange program. A group of security personnel attempted to enter a restricted area; the beings could have caused the ammunition in the guards' sidearms to detonate had they entered. One of the aliens attempted to stop the security team, a fight broke out, and all the security personnel involved were killed by head wounds. The incident brought the alien information-exchange program to a halt.
1980s: Fly-by-thought programs
Stephen Chua, a Singapore Special Forces colonel with exceptional natural gamma wave brain activity, was transferred to the S-4 facility at Papoose Lake at the request of the United States Air Force with permission from Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The facility was testing fly-by-thought systems installed in modified F-15E fighters designated F-15F, in which the co-pilot's rear seat was replaced with electronics and a specialized helmet measured the pilot's brainwaves. Artificial gamma enhancement via serum caused brain damage and death in American pilots, prompting the search for individuals with natural gamma-wave ability.
While at the facility, Chua encountered Kiily-Tokurt (Tall Whites), Maytra, and short Grey drones used as worker units. Security guards assigned to protect Chua carried energy weapons rather than conventional firearms, as "the bullets don't work on these guys." The species did not freely intermingle with human personnel; Chua described a "cold mingling area" — designated work zones where the species would come and go — but outside these zones there was no relaxed interaction, and the environment was considered dangerous for humans. The Kiily-Tokurt kept a black triangular craft underground, surrounded by an energy field that required a special suit for any human who approached. The complex extended to at least 10 underground levels, with underground train systems connecting sections of the base.
Chua also encountered Mars-based human technicians temporarily assigned to the facility, whom he discovered were effectively slaves with few rights who could be expelled from their Mars bases for insubordination.
1985: Reactor accident
At some point prior to Lazar's arrival, a "horrific accident" occurred when personnel attempted to cut into an operating reactor at S-4, reportedly using a plasma cutter — killing at least one person. The incident was covered up as an "unannounced nuclear test" at the Nevada Test Site. Lazar's supervisor Barry alluded to it, and Lazar understood he was replacing someone who had been involved.
1988–1989: Project Galileo
Main article:
S-4 employment of Bob Lazar
Project Galileo -- the propulsion-research compartment under which the Sport Model was studied -- was housed at S-4 during 1988-1989, with Bob Lazar briefly assigned as a propulsion physicist tasked with determining how the craft's reactor operated. S-4 personnel reportedly held a stockpile of approximately 500 pounds of Element 115 on site, transferred from Los Alamos National Laboratory, where it was machined into discs, stacked, cut into a cone shape, and sliced along the long axis by personnel who allegedly did not know the purpose of the parts they fabricated. The S-4 briefing room contained 121 or 122 reading-room briefings covering ten thousand years of alleged extraterrestrial contact with Earth and autopsy photographs of a small being approximately 3.5-4 feet tall, with the chest opened in a T-incision and a single organ sectioned. Lazar described the on-site working environment as "terrible" and "suppressive" despite the unparalleled technological access: "the only thing that keeps you there is just that the desire to become familiar with that level of technology."
Wednesday-evening test flights of the Sport Model were conducted from S-4 grounds -- chosen because that night had the lowest civilian traffic on the surrounding highways. A ground technician with a scanner reportedly communicated with the disc operator on an unencrypted frequency in the 200 MHz bandwidth, a security breach that surprised Lazar. The flight characteristics observed and the circumstances of Lazar's removal from the program in April 1989 are detailed in S-4 employment of Bob Lazar and Sport Model.
Skeptical analysis
Tom Mahood, a physicist who investigated Lazar's claims extensively in the 1990s and 2000s, argued that the Wednesday night glowing objects seen over Groom Lake were not craft but plasmas generated by a high-powered proton accelerator dumping its beam into the atmosphere, and that Lazar knew this. In Mahood's reconstruction, Lazar was hired as an electronics technician for the proton beam project at Groom through a recommendation from Teller, then fabricated the saucer narrative to his friends as a cover when he brought them to observe the classified tests -- and was forced to maintain the story afterward to avoid prosecution. Mahood also noted that no structures have been observed at Papoose Lake consistent with hangar bays by researchers who have visited or photographed the site.
1990–2003: Biological research program
Dan Burisch (born Daniel Crain) was assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1990 and began working at S-4 that same year, initially receiving limited exposure to the Galileo Bay, Project Looking Glass, and Sidekick before being transitioned to biological research. He had previously performed testing work at Groom Lake itself, two floors underground, in a biological warfare containment laboratory (Lab 8B) that featured a large spanning walkway set inside a cavern with an aircraft-carrier-style elevator system.
Biological containment procedures
S-4 Level 4-3 residential quarters (Schratt, Project Aquarius, 2010).
S-4 Level 4-4 biocontainment laboratories (Schratt, Project Aquarius, 2010).
The BL-4 laboratory at S-4 required personnel to be catheterized, then suited in total encapsulation positive-pressure suits similar to NASA space suits, with cooling systems, communication apparatus, and air lines connected to ceiling-mounted rotator heads. Only two personnel were authorized inside the cabinet lab at once, though the team routinely put three people inside to meet work deadlines. When personnel needed to pass each other, they had to consciously rotate around one another to avoid crossing their air lines -- a maneuver they jokingly called "we're a hydra" -- which invariably prompted the surveillance team to interject: "Gentlemen, enough of the jokes, please."
The emergency escape route from the BL-4 level shared the same tube as the incinerator blow-off system. In any genuine containment emergency, the options were to remain and be incinerated or to attempt escape through a tube carrying superheated pressure -- "either you are going to stay there and be melted or be blown out like a marshmallow, a toasted marshmallow, out of the blow-off tubes."
Clean sphere research
Burisch was first brought to the viewing gallery above the ambassadorial suite in late 1993 (by his recollection) or early 1994 (per facility records), where he saw Chi'el'ah (J-Rod) for the first time through the glass. Entry into the clean sphere itself required passing through a series of pressurized antechambers, walking up a gantry that was mechanically positioned against the sphere, and being hooked into interior air systems before the drum equalization system could open the passage.
Verbal communication was strictly forbidden in the presence of J-Rod; Burisch was supposed to communicate only through sign mimicry via a holographic teleprompter system projected inside the sphere glass. In practice, telepathic communication between Burisch and J-Rod had begun the moment Burisch entered the ambassadorial suite, well before reaching the sphere. Burisch concealed this from his supervisors until his research began producing results that diverged from expectations, at which point the communication was discovered and a bargain was struck: Burisch would share limited information from J-Rod in exchange for access to the Doctrine of Convergent Timeline Paradox.
The tissue research itself focused on J-Rod's progressive peripheral neuropathy, specifically involving antifreeze glycoproteins and immunoglobulin A (IgA) -- the latter a counterintuitive focus since IgA exists in lesser fractions in normal human immune systems. The prior research team (designated AQR-1, for Aquarius) had been focused on genomic translocations and chromosomal reduction, but Burisch's approach involved glycoprotein chemistry and VRM (virtual reality microscopy) systems to manipulate molecular models in three dimensions.
J-Rod's nature
Through extended interaction, Burisch determined that Chi'el'ah was not an alien in the conventional sense but an extraterrestrial with direct evolutionary lineage to humanity -- a future human descendant. Burisch distinguished carefully between "alien" (no genetic connection to humanity) and "extraterrestrial" (of human origin but from beyond Earth): "I have never met an alien, but I have met an extraterrestrial." The J-Rod was designated a P-52 J-Rod, indicating origin approximately 52,000 years in a future timeline.
2003: J-Rod departure
In 2003, Chi'el'ah was moved from S-4 to the Abydos stargate as part of the Tau-9 treaty negotiations, concluding the facility's decades-long biological research program on the entity.
Public record
Knowledge of S-4 has entered the public record through independent disclosures spanning more than three decades, beginning with Bob Lazar's 1989 interviews with George Knapp on KLAS-TV. Steven Greer has described the Nevada complex as comprising multiple numbered sectors — "S-3, S-4, S-9, Twelve, Groom Lake Mesa" — and alleged that two distinct and compartmentalized operations ran simultaneously: one studying recovered ET craft and another building human-made reverse-engineered versions, separated by a deliberate "firewall" so that personnel in each program did not know of the other's existence. Bill Uhouse subsequently described his 30-year career building the disc flight simulator; Michael Wolf's description of the 1975 security incident was published by journalist Chris Stonor in 2000; Dan Burisch gave an extensive video debriefing covering 1990–2003 in 2005; and in 2019, former SR-71 pilot Captain David Fruehauf described the existence of S-4 shortly before his death, stating that Lazar's description was "entirely accurate." Attorney Daniel Sheehan described being contacted by a deathbed witness identified as Oscar Wolfe (also referred to as Albert Stein), a U.S. Army clerk typist assigned to the classified division of Project Blue Book, who was brought to S-4 — described to him as approximately 11 miles south of Area 51 — where, through a two-way mirror, he witnessed a commanding officer conduct a telepathic interview with a non-human intelligent being approximately 5.5 feet tall wearing a blue jumpsuit, who described itself as part of a galactic monitoring team. Wolfe reportedly had not spoken of the incident to anyone — not even his wife — in the intervening decades before making the deathbed call to Sheehan. Late-career disclosures by engineers with Lockheed backgrounds, including Boyd Bushman's 2014 deathbed interview, have been characterized by Michael Salla as consistent with a "museum" interpretation of the facility — primarily a storage and study site rather than an active reverse-engineering operation, the successful reverse engineering having already occurred decades earlier at contractor facilities operated by Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and General Dynamics. Aviation researcher James Goodall asked then-Skunkworks president Jeff Babione directly about Lockheed's involvement; Babione stated he had "absolutely no knowledge" but conceded that "what happened before I came here and maybe it's something compartmentalized that I have no access to — Lockheed could have been involved." The 2025 documentary S4: The Bob Lazar Story, produced by Project Gravitaur, features a virtual reality reconstruction of the facility, the recovered craft, and the laboratory spaces described by Lazar.
