Secret society
A secret society is an organization whose membership, rituals, and objectives are kept hidden from the general public — cited in exopolitics research as a potential repository of suppressed knowledge about non-human civilizations, a channel through which Anunnaki-descended ruling bloodlines maintain control over human institutions, and an organizational structure through which Majestic 12 and related oversight groups operated outside democratic accountability. Alternative historians further trace named secret societies — Freemasonry, the Rosicrucians, the Knights Templar — to a claimed unbroken prehistoric lineage of ancient mystery schools transmitting suppressed extraterrestrial-contact knowledge; that specific ancient-continuity thesis is treated at Secret ancient societies.
Freemasonry
Freemasonry is the largest fraternal secret society in the Western world, tracing its symbolic lineage to the builders of Solomon's Temple. Alternative researchers including William Cooper, Jordan Maxwell, and Michael Tsarion argue that Masonic symbolism preserves encoded knowledge of the Anunnaki and ancient ET contact — including the All-Seeing Eye (associated with the Anunnaki communications hub at Nippur), the Royal Arch Degree's secret name of God (argued to encode Yahweh/Baal/Osiris as a composite Anunnaki title), and the construction mythology linking pre-Flood knowledge with the Hiram Abiff narrative.
Bill Schnoebelen, a former 33rd-degree Mason who also attained high degrees in the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, describes the initiatory structure of Masonic lodges in detail: the Blue Lodge (three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, Master Mason), followed by either the York Rite (seven degrees, culminating in the Knights Templar degree) or the Scottish Rite (29 additional degrees, reaching the 32nd as Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, with honorary 33rd degree conferred on politically or industrially significant members). Schnoebelen identifies the scholars whose works reveal the occult core of Masonry — Albert Pike (Morals and Dogma), Albert Mackey (Encyclopedia of Freemasonry), and Manly P. Hall (The Lost Keys of Freemasonry) — as all being high-level occultists who openly acknowledge that Masonry's deepest energies are Luciferian.
Schnoebelen describes the blood-oath structure of Masonic initiation — in which candidates swear under penalty of having their throat cut, tongue torn out, and body buried in the sands of the sea — as a mechanism by which even non-occult members unknowingly channel energy to the occult hierarchy above them.
Beyond the 33rd degree, Schnoebelen describes the Rite of Memphis-Misraim — a 360-degree system operating in Europe — as the deeper structure within which the most senior initiates operate, involving doctrines of sexual alchemy and promises of physical immortality through practices the exoteric Masonic membership has no knowledge of.
Fritz Springmeier describes Freemasonry itself as a control layer for a deeper organization — "the glove on the hand" of the Illuminati, concealing the true power structure behind a public fraternal front. Masonic philosopher Manly P. Hall stated in America's Assignment with Destiny that a secret governing body controls the globe, and Albert Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry is cited by Springmeier as directly acknowledging the Illuminati.
Skull and Bones
Skull and Bones (Order 322), the Yale senior secret society founded in 1832, is notable in the exopolitics literature primarily for the disproportionate number of its members in senior positions of the CIA, State Department, and defense establishment — including both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, John Kerry, and numerous CIA directors and directors of national intelligence. The organization is cited as an example of the interlocking elite networks that provide the personnel continuity for covert programs regardless of which political party holds the presidency.
Rosicrucians and Hermeticism
The Rosicrucian tradition — emerging in early 17th-century Europe with the publication of the Fama Fraternitatis (1614) and Confessio Fraternitatis (1615) — claimed access to ancient Egyptian and Hermetic knowledge transmitted through a semi-legendary founder, Christian Rosenkreuz, who allegedly obtained his wisdom in the East. In alternative history frameworks, Rosicrucianism is interpreted as a survival tradition preserving pre-diluvian ET-transmitted cosmological knowledge in allegorical form, including the alchemical transformation of matter (interpreted as a metaphor for consciousness elevation) and the doctrine of the astral body (compatible with density-model ascension theory).
Ordo Templi Orientis and the Thelemic milieu
The Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), a ceremonial magic order refounded under Aleister Crowley in the early 20th century, occupies a specific place in exopolitics literature through its connection to Jack Parsons, the JPL rocket scientist and OTO lodge master whose Babalon Working ritual in 1946 — conducted with L. Ron Hubbard — is cited as a deliberate attempt to open a dimensional gateway. Parsons' simultaneous roles as America's leading rocket scientist and a senior Thelemic magician represent, for alternative researchers, the intersection of the aerospace-intelligence establishment with occult societies.
Bohemian Grove
The Bohemian Grove, an annual encampment in northern California attended by senior political, military, and corporate figures, includes a theatrical ritual called the Cremation of Care in which an effigy is burned before a 40-foot owl statue. William Cooper and other researchers identify the owl as a symbol of Moloch — the deity to whom the Canaanites and later Phoenicians offered child sacrifices — and the Cremation of Care as a ritualized affirmation of the participants' freedom from moral constraint in the exercise of power.
Alex Jones, who has attended and filmed the ceremony, argues that Skull and Bones took over Bohemian Grove around 1900, and cites former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt as having explicitly described the gatherings as Illuminati rituals in his memoirs.
Jah-Bul-On: the composite Masonic deity
Schnoebelen identifies the Royal Arch degree's secret name of God — Jah-Bul-On — as a composite encoding of three divine names: Jah (Jehovah), Bul (Baal, the Canaanite sun god), and On (Osiris, the Egyptian underworld deity). Schnoebelen describes this as a deliberate corruption of the divine name, mushing it together with two entities whose worship was explicitly condemned in the Hebrew scriptures.
Knights Templar and the York Rite oath
The Knights Templar order, founded in 1119 and stationed for years at Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, is alleged to have acquired both vast wealth and suppressed theological knowledge during its time in the Holy Land. Its sudden suppression and massacre on the orders of Philip IV of France in 1307 is attributed by alternative researchers to its possession of dangerous secrets — allegedly including evidence undermining the historical accuracy of the Gospels, or material connecting Christian tradition to pre-Christian initiatory religion; survivors are alleged to have transmitted their knowledge into Scottish Rite Freemasonry and the later Priory of Sion.
The seventh degree of the York Rite — the Knights Templar degree — requires the candidate to swear the most extreme oath in American Masonry, described by Schnoebelen as pledging to have the top of the skull smote off and the brain exposed to the rays of the noonday sun. Schnoebelen also describes the Knights Templar degree's initiatory chamber as being draped entirely in black, with a triangular altar at which a candidate swears allegiance to Baphomet — the goat-headed figure worshipped by the historical Templars. Schnoebelen traces the Templars' occult knowledge to their interaction with the Hashashin (Assassins) during the Crusades — an exchange of initiatory doctrines that subsequently entered the Stonemasons' guild and eventually Freemasonry, and that accounts for the pagan symbolism visible in the Gothic cathedrals of medieval Europe.
Palladium Masonry and the 19th Degree
Beyond the public Scottish Rite structure, Schnoebelen describes the Palladium — described as the higher esoteric levels of Freemasonry — as the degree structure within which genuinely Luciferian workings are conducted, in contrast to the Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, and York Rite orders accessible to ordinary American Masons. Schnoebelen attained the 90th degree of the Rite of Memphis and Misraim, a 97-degree system documented in mainstream Masonic encyclopedias, and describes virtually all the degrees above the Blue Lodge as "deeply Luciferian." The 19th degree of the Scottish Rite — entitled Grand Pontiff — includes, according to Schnoebelen, a ritual invocation of Satan: "in the 19th degree of the Scottish Rite, they actually call up the devil. They summon Satan." This practice occurs while thousands of Christian pastors simultaneously hold Blue Lodge membership with no awareness of the ritual content of degrees three grades above them.
Illuminati infiltration of Masonry
Adam Weishaupt's Bavarian Illuminati (founded 1776) was designed, according to Schnoebelen, for the express purpose of infiltrating Freemasonry. Because Masons were constantly seeking more "light" — higher knowledge — the Illuminati structure fitted seamlessly into the existing Masonic framework, making it nearly impossible to determine where Masonry ended and Illuminism began. The date 1776 is identified as deliberately chosen for its numerological significance.
Masonic objectives and the Tower of Babel program
Schnoebelen identifies the overarching twin objectives of Masonry as the destruction of monotheism and the establishment of a one-world government and one-world religion — a program he traces in symbolic form back to the Tower of Babel, which he describes as "the world's first United Nations": a city (political Babylon) and a tower (religious Babylon) erected as a single unified project.
Law enforcement penetration
Schnoebelen documents that Masonic lodge membership has penetrated law enforcement at every level — including J. Edgar Hoover, who held the 33rd degree and whose membership left, in Schnoebelen's assessment, a solid Masonic stamp on the FBI that persisted for decades. The Masonic obligation requiring members to warn a brother Mason of "approaching danger" creates a structural conflict of interest within any criminal justice system in which both the officer and the suspect are Masons.
Priory of Sion
The Priory of Sion is alleged to be the secret inner order that predated and controlled the Knights Templar, dedicated to protecting the bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene (the Holy Grail in this interpretation), which is claimed to have merged with Merovingian royal bloodlines. The organization was publicized through the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion controversy and later through The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (1982) by Baigent, Leigh, and Lincoln, and the documentary forgeries of Pierre Plantard.
P2 Lodge
Propaganda Due (P2) was a clandestine Masonic lodge operating in Italy from the 1960s until its exposure in 1981. Under Grand Master Licio Gelli, P2 included senior Italian military and intelligence officials, politicians, businessmen, and members of the Vatican hierarchy. The lodge was implicated in a series of terrorist attacks, assassinations, and financial scandals — including the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano and the alleged murder of its chairman Roberto Calvi, found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982. P2 is cited as a modern example of how Masonic structures can serve as covert coordination networks for political and financial operations that transcend national governments.
Club of Rome
The Club of Rome, founded in 1968 by Italian industrialist Aurelio Peccei and Scottish scientist Alexander King, published The Limits to Growth (1972) and has been identified by conspiracy researchers as a planning body for the global elite. Cooper and others identify the Club of Rome as one of the organizations through which the "Order of the Quest" coordinates long-range policy — particularly population reduction, economic restructuring, and the management of global resources under centralized authority.
Unitary thesis: the Order of the Quest
Bill Cooper argues in Behold a Pale Horse that the apparent diversity of named secret societies conceals a single continuous organization operating under many names: "I hope to show that most modern secret societies and especially those that practice degrees of initiation — and that is the key — are really one society with one purpose. You may call them whatever you wish — the Order of the Quest, the JASON Society, the Roshaniya, the Qabbalah, the Knights Templar, the Knights of Malta, the Knights of Columbus, the Jesuits, the Masons, the Ancient and Mystical Order of Rosae Crucis, the Illuminati, the Nazi Party, the Communist Party... they are all the same and all work toward the same ultimate goal, a New World Order."
Jim Marrs describes the architecture of secret-society control as a nested structure of concealment — "secrets within secrets within secrets" — where each level of initiation reveals only enough to maintain the loyalty and function of that tier, while the true purpose and leadership remain hidden behind successive veils of misdirection and compartmentalization. This model mirrors the compartmentalization principle used in intelligence agencies and Special Access Programs, suggesting the same organizational logic governs both modern classified programs and historical initiatory traditions.
Connection to the Cabal and deep state
In exopolitics frameworks, secret societies function as one layer of the Ancient global Cabal — the term used for the interlocking network of bloodline families, intelligence operators, financial institutions, and occult orders that maintains control over human civilization on behalf of, or in collaboration with, hostile NHI factions. The compartmentalized structure of secret societies — in which most members are kept in ignorance of the true objectives of the organization's inner circle — mirrors the compartmentalization described in covert UFO/ET programs: genuine knowledge is held only by the few, while the many provide legitimacy, funding, and energy to the system without awareness of its ultimate purpose.
David Icke argues that the 33rd degree's Latin motto Ordo ab Chao (Order out of Chaos) reveals the operating principle of the entire Masonic-Cabal structure: engineer a problem, wait for the public reaction, then offer the pre-prepared solution — a process Icke calls the "problem-reaction-solution" cycle that, when applied repeatedly in small increments, constitutes what he terms the "totalitarian tiptoe."
Fritz Springmeier traces the institutional continuity through Skull and Bones' German origins: investigators who broke into a Skull and Bones initiation room found text written on the wall in German that, when later translated, linked the organization to the same Illuminati network that Weishaupt had constructed. Springmeier also documents that 25 American presidents share a close genealogical relationship — a chart he published in Bloodlines of the Illuminati — and that many are photographed in Masonic regalia, including Ronald Reagan receiving his honorary 33rd degree on the cover of New Age magazine.
Icke further identifies the Round Table — a network established just before the start of the 20th century by Cecil Rhodes's associates — as the organizational ancestor of the Trilateral Commission (co-founded by David Rockefeller in 1973), the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Bilderberg Group: successive visible manifestations of the same controlling structure that Masonry's inner circle feeds into.
Jim Marrs (Rule by Secrecy), Fritz Springmeier (Bloodlines of the Illuminati), and other researchers document the genealogical and institutional continuity between the major secret societies — Freemasonry, the Illuminati (founded by Adam Weishaupt in 1776), Skull and Bones, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Bilderberg Group — as successive organizational vehicles for the same controlling bloodlines across centuries.
