Extraterrestrial being

Being that originates beyond Earth

An extraterrestrial being, also called an extraterrestrial, ET, or space alien, is a being that originates beyond Earth. According to the UFO extraterrestrial hypothesis, UFO occupants are beings from extraterrestrial civilizations and/or such beings are the agency behind reported alien encounters.

The term carries distinct connotations across contexts: in scientific usage it refers to any life originating off Earth; in contact and disclosure testimony it denotes technologically advanced civilizations capable of interstellar travel; and in exopolitics the distinction between extraterrestrial (space-origin), interdimensional, and ultraterrestrial (parallel-dimensional or Earth-hidden) origins has become practically relevant as accounts describe beings arriving by different mechanisms. The Galactic Federation of Worlds is described as having deprecated "extraterrestrial" in favor of "non-human intelligence," on the grounds that many "ET" beings are not strictly space-travelers but operate across dimensional or temporal boundaries the spatial prefix fails to capture.

Terminology and naming disputes

The terminology used to describe non-human beings visiting Earth is itself contested. The government and military use "UAP" (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) as the current institutionally preferred term, deliberately non-committal on origin, while David Grusch and other whistleblowers used "non-human intelligence" and "non-human origin technical vehicles" in formal settings such as the 2023 UAP Congressional Hearing. Steven Greer, founder of the Disclosure Project, has objected to the term "NHI," calling it a product of the "CIA psychological warfare Division that has the linguistics department" and arguing that "flying saucers" was replaced by manufactured terminology designed to control the narrative: "Flying saucers are real. That's what they used to be called before they made up the fake name UFO, UAP. Those were made up." Tom DeLonge, on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2017, endorsed the hypothesis that human beings are the product of extraterrestrial genetic engineering, answering "I do" when asked directly whether non-human beings "took some lower hominids and did something to them to create human beings."

Historical usage

The modern use of "extraterrestrial" in the UFO/contact context dates to the post-World War II period and the 1947 Roswell recovery. The term "flying saucer" — coined by press misquoting pilot Kenneth Arnold's 1947 description — was quickly paired with "extraterrestrial" as the dominant explanatory framework for unidentified craft, framing the phenomenon as space visitors consistent with the concurrent science-fiction genre. Earlier contact traditions — the Vril Society, Thule Society, and pre-war spiritualist channels — used different vocabulary (cosmic beings, Venusians, space brothers) that has since been superseded.

Related categories of non-human intelligence

Extraterrestrials are the most commonly discussed category of non-human intelligent being in ufology and exopolitics, and are distinguished from several related categories:

In practice these categories overlap: the Zenae of Andromeda are extraterrestrial in origin but employ interdimensional and time travel, and reptilian species such as the Draco reptilians are extraterrestrial in origin (from Alpha Draconis) but have maintained a terrestrial presence for millennia, blurring the line with cryptoterrestrial classification. The umbrella term "non-human intelligent beings" was adopted in government and research usage to encompass all categories without presupposing any single origin.

Classification frameworks

Elena Danaan's A Gift from the Stars and Encyclopedia Galactica series provide the most detailed published taxonomy of extraterrestrial types active in the local stellar neighborhood, classifying approximately 110 distinct species by morphology, star system of origin, galactic affiliation (Galactic Federation of Worlds, Alpha Draconis Empire, Orion Group, independent), and history of interaction with Earth — compiled into the List of non-human intelligent beings. Steven Greer has stated that as of the 1960s, U.S. government programs had catalogued at least 69 distinct types of extraterrestrial — a figure he attributes to crash-retrieval team member Sergeant Clifford Stone — with the actual number likely higher today.

Density and dimensional classification

Contact testimony — particularly from the Cosmic Agency channel and Elena Danaan's contacts with Thor Han Eredyon — categorizes extraterrestrial beings not only by morphology and star-system origin but by the density or dimensional plane from which they operate. Fifth-density beings such as the Ahel of Taygeta in the Pleiades operate primarily from a 5th-density layer that makes them invisible to conventional sensors; many Pleiadian species retreated to fifth density following the Lyran Wars precisely to evade Draco reptilians predation. Fully non-physical or trans-dimensional beings — sometimes called ultraterrestrials — interact with third density reality through consciousness projection, portal technology, or brief materialization rather than spacecraft transit; these are distinguished in exopolitics from physical ETs even when phenomenologically indistinguishable to the observer.

Swaruu of Taygeta, a Pleiadian contact of the Cosmic Agency channel, describes the Prime Directive framework in which the Galactic Federation of Worlds withholds open contact with civilizations below a threshold of collective spiritual and technological maturity, on the grounds that premature contact disrupts a species' natural developmental arc — a non-interference doctrine applying regardless of whether the contacted beings are 3rd-density biological ETs or higher-density non-physical entities. Greer has emphasized the practical importance of distinguishing biological extraterrestrials from other star systems from inter-dimensional entities, warning that the co-mingling of these categories — sometimes deliberately encouraged by intelligence agencies — generates confusion that impedes accurate understanding of the phenomenon.

Service-to-others vs. service-to-self

A foundational polarity in exopolitics taxonomy distinguishes extraterrestrial civilizations by orientation: service-to-others (STO) civilizations cooperate, share technology, and respect other species' sovereignty; service-to-self (STS) civilizations exploit, colonize, and treat other species as resources. This polarity — drawn from the Law of One material and widely adopted in contactee traditions — maps onto galactic political alignments: Galactic Federation of Worlds member species are predominantly STO, while Alpha Draconian Empire and Orion-affiliated species are predominantly STS. The polarity is not absolute — individual beings within STS societies can develop STO orientations and defect to Federation contact networks.

Biological vs. trans-dimensional extraterrestrials

Contact testimony distinguishes several broad physical types:

The practical relevance for exopolitics is that treaty frameworks and non-interference norms differ: physical biological ETs are subject to the same interstellar governance frameworks as human civilizations, while trans-dimensional beings operate under different rules not fully encompassed by the Prime Directive.

Extraterrestrial humans

A distinct category, sometimes overlooked, is extraterrestrial humans — biologically human beings (or Terran-compatible populations) living off Earth, in breakaway colonies such as the ICC installations on Mars, or in inner-Earth civilizations such as the Anshar and Telosii who are documented to have interbred with surface Terrans. These are not non-human intelligent beings but humans; the term "extraterrestrial" encompasses them, though they are rarely the referent in casual usage.

The EBE classification system

The term Extraterrestrial Biological Entity (EBE) entered classified US government documentation following the Roswell-era recoveries and became the standard internal designation for physically recovered or directly encountered non-human beings. The term is associated primarily with the Majestic 12 committee established by President Truman in 1947, and with Project Aquarius — the Majestic oversight program for EBE contact and research. The term gained wider currency through Paul Bennewitz, who intercepted communications from Kirtland Air Force Base and became convinced he was monitoring EBE transmissions; he used the variant spelling "Eben" for diminutive grey entities, which subsequently became a distinct designation in the serpo.org disclosure documents for the grey-type beings from Zeta Reticuli in the exchange program Project Serpo. The standard MJ-12-era taxonomy used EBE as a broad category with subclassifications:

J-Rod: the paradigm EBE case

The most extensively documented claimed EBE is J-Rod (also written J•Rod), a grey-type entity allegedly present at the Area 51 S-4 facility from approximately 1953 onward. The name derived from early communication attempts: unable to establish spoken language, researchers showed the entity symbol cards, and it indicated two symbols — one resembling a "J" and one resembling a rod or inertial bar. Bill Uhouse, a retired mechanical engineer, described J-Rod as a technical adviser to a classified flight-simulator program at Los Alamos and Area 51 — hairless, with large black wrap-around eyes and four-fingered hands, said to be 200 years old and suffering cellular deterioration, originating from the Kingman, Arizona crash of 1953. The most detailed account comes from Dan Burisch (also Dan Crain), a microbiologist who claims he collected tissue samples from J-Rod at S-4 and reported communication achieved partly through telepathy; according to Burisch, J-Rod is not a separate species but a future human from the P45 timeline — 45,000 years ahead — whose lineage diverged through hybridization and environmental adaptation into the small grey form. A video claimed to depict a live EBE at the S-4 Papoose complex — designated EBE-K24 — was uploaded in 2007 and alleged to have been recorded on July 6, 1993.

EBEs as future humans: the P45/P52 model

A significant complication to the ET-versus-human framing is the claim, advanced most fully by Dan Burisch, that at least some entities classified as EBEs are future humans who have traveled backward in time. Two principal future-human lineages are described:

This temporal model is offered to explain why the greys appear specifically interested in human genetics (repairing their own), why they show recognizably human emotional responses, and why communication sometimes occurs through shared imagery and emotion. (See extratempestrial hypothesis for the parallel future-humans thesis of Michael Masters.)

BAASS biological research

The Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) program — the primary contractor for the DIA's AATIP effort — included significant biological research components, reportedly maintaining repositories at Skinwalker Ranch for physical materials related to UAP encounters, including alleged biological samples. Colm Kelleher, BAASS's science director, described systematic collection of tissue and material samples from encounter sites. Luis Elizondo, former AATIP director, has stated that the biological effects of UAP encounters on human witnesses — tissue damage, radiation burns, neurological disruption, and in some cases healing — represent some of the most significant data in UAP research.

Classification challenges

The multiplicity of NHI categories creates persistent classification problems. A being biological in composition but originating outside current spacetime may present identically to a biological ET in physical examination; a consciousness entity that temporarily manifests a body for a contact encounter will appear biological in that moment; reptilian species present on or within Earth for tens of thousands of years are extraterrestrial in origin but functionally cryptoterrestrial in their present relationship to the planet. The NHI umbrella category was adopted to avoid forcing premature classification. For the species-by-species breakdown, see List of non-human intelligent species.
