Dan Burisch

Dan Burisch (born Danny B. Crain, full legal name as of 2006 Danny B. Catselas Burisch; born February 2, 1964) is a whistleblower who says he worked as a microbiologist and contractor for the United States Navy at the S-4 facility near Area 51 in Nevada during the 1990s. His central claims concern a working relationship with a J-Rod designated Chi'el'ah — a P-52 J-Rod he describes as a post-apocalyptic descendant of humanity from approximately 52,000 years in the future — his involvement with the Looking Glass future-viewing device, the biological research program Project Lotus, and the Tau-9 treaty negotiation process.

His claimed doctorate in microbiology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook is disputed, with SUNY reportedly denying having his records and former UNLV colleagues denying knowledge of his graduate work. Because the career is documented almost entirely through Burisch's own testimony and supporting documents collected in the third-party Brian Jackson-maintained Burisch Archive — with the institutional records he names said to have been erased and his named co-witnesses now dead — the same record is read, by those who take the account as authentic deep-cover disclosure, as a missing paper trail that is the expected residue of a cover-up, and, by those who reject it, as the hallmark of either a managed-disclosure operation he sincerely relayed or sustained fabrication.

Early life

Burisch was born in the Los Angeles area and grew up in Lakewood, California. In 1973, at approximately age nine, he allegedly experienced an abduction incident while playing baseball with his grandfather at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. According to his account, he was running to catch a fly ball when "the entire area around me turned black. It had been shaded out from the sun," followed by a temporal discontinuity during which he claims to have lost conscious awareness. He claims his grandfather, who witnessed the event, refused to discuss what occurred that day for the remainder of his life, leading to family arguments and his grandparents' eventual relocation. Burisch later claimed that during his work with Chi'el'ah, the J-Rod allegedly showed him the incident from the extraterrestrial perspective, describing being "pulled by my chest, upward, off the surface of the park" and witnessing his grandfather's distressed reaction. The episode takes its abduction shape only in this later telling, after Burisch was already immersed in the S-4 narrative; read as a hoax, the blackout and repositioned sun become an ordinary childhood gap retrofitted with an abduction frame, the grandfather's lifelong silence a mundane family rift that can no longer be cross-examined, and the captor's-eye detail — supplied only once Chi'el'ah was already part of the account — back-formation knitting the childhood into the J-Rod story rather than independent confirmation of it. On Burisch's account the same sequence instead closes a loop, the 1973 child and his future laboratory subject the same being met across time.

His interest in biology was subsequently shaped from childhood, when he was introduced through a network of scientists — starting with Dr. James Reynolds, chief pathologist at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center — to the Los Angeles Microscopical Society, which met at the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. Through the microscopical society he was also introduced to Zane Price of UCLA, who showed him how to use a transmission electron microscope. Burisch has claimed that as a child during the 1970s at LAMS meetings, he first encountered an individual he later identified as a Majestic-12 member, allegedly MJ-1 Mike McConnell, describing the initial contact: "I first met the gentleman at the back of the LAMS, the museum, more than 20 years, since the 1970s." Given Burisch's 1964 birth year, this first meeting would have occurred when he was approximately 12 years old. According to researcher Ron Garner, this relationship developed into a lifelong mentorship, with McConnell allegedly serving as Burisch's "mentor during his whole life" and treating him as his "in effect godson," later appointing him to the MJ-9 position in spring 2005.

Education

Burisch received a B.A. in biology from UNLV in December 1986. During his time at UNLV, he served as President of the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology from 1986-1987. He claims to have earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989, with his doctoral training funded by Edward Teller through the Committee of the Majority; his advisor was a glycoproteins expert he identified only as "Bill" with a surname beginning with "L." The dissertation topic was "The Use of Hypochlorite Complexes on Malignant Tissue," building on work he had done in England under Dr. John Bunyan, who pioneered medical applications of hypochlorite solutions.

SUNY has reportedly denied having his records, and former colleagues at UNLV denied knowledge of his doctoral work when researchers and journalists investigated after his public emergence in the early 2000s; independent checkers found no peer-reviewed publications under his name in Medline or the Science Citation Index and no PhD thesis listed at SUNY Stony Brook. Burisch attributes the blank record to the classified nature of his training — funded, he says, off the books by Edward Teller through the Committee of the Majority, with his file sealed or expunged as is said to happen routinely to deep-program insiders — and at the 2004 Rob Simone event displayed a private legal agreement he said established that SUNY had been "caught lying" about his record. On a skeptical reading, an absence consistent with a cover-up is equally consistent with a credential that never existed, and the agreement said to prove otherwise was displayed but never independently produced.

Marriage and name change

In 1990, Burisch married Deborah Kay Burisch, who had a one-year-old daughter named Tiffany from a previous relationship. Five years later in 1995, he legally changed his surname from Crain to Burisch, adopting his stepdaughter's surname so the family would share a single name: "In 1995, I changed over to the name Burisch because her biological father obviously was not present. And what we did not want to do... we did not want Tiffany to have questions asked of her at school." His birth surname is spelled "Crain" across the documentary record — in his mother's affidavit, his own 2006 affidavit, the 1999 Thomas Mack letter, and his archived résumé — and the spelling is corroborated by the Las Vegas court record of the 1995 change cited by researcher Bill Hamilton. By 2006, his full legal name was Danny B. Catselas Burisch.

Clandestine and military career

Burisch claims an approximately twenty-year career (c. 1980–2005) in classified military and intelligence programs, documented primarily through his own testimony to Bill Hamilton, Project Camelot, Rob Simone, Ron Garner, and Linda Moulton Howe, with corroborating material including a 1999 handwritten letter from retired Air Force Major Thomas Mack referencing a "Captain Danny Crain" on Q-S4 projects.

Recruitment and early training (1980–1989)

Burisch says the network that eventually recruited him into classified programs first approached him in 1980, when he was working in a biology laboratory at UNLV under a professor. Majestic-connected figures walked in — one a civilian, another in a naval uniform — and introduced themselves through an aide-de-camp to MJ-1 known internally as "Little John." The MJ-1 whose aide-de-camp recruited Burisch was allegedly Admiral Mike McConnell, who according to researcher Ron Garner served as Burisch's "mentor during his whole life" following their initial contact at the Los Angeles Microscopical Society in the 1970s. They allegedly tantalized him with the promise of everything he would ask for in a laboratory; "that portion of the promise," he said, "was true."

By 1986, he was formally inducted into Majestic 12 with a B.A. degree, USN commission, and Secret clearance. After the initial approach he was reportedly run through a series of evaluations — what he calls "Winnebago trips" — in a parking lot at the Silver Bowl Arena, followed by meetings at the Naval Reserve Center in Las Vegas. He saw a video with "MAJ" on the screen, which at that time allegedly meant nothing to him, and asked to give opinions on its content.

Groom Lake and S-4 assignment (1989–1994)

He says he was subsequently moved from Nellis Air Force Base through a sequence of facilities, then to Groom Lake in 1989, transported on a 737 "Janet" aircraft. In 1989 he was cleared for Groom Lake and Project Aquarius, while in 1990 he was assigned to S-4 at Papoose Lake as Microbiologist III with USN rank of Commander and Top Secret clearance.

His S-4 assignment included multiple laboratory clearances: the ECC Support Lab in Hangar 8B (1990-91), the Avionics Lab at Ground Base 01, and the Anatomy Lab in Hangar 8C (1991). He has said he confirmed aspects of Bob Lazar's independently described account of the S-4 facility layout, including the Galileo Bay numbering system and briefing room.

Independent of Burisch's own testimony, a handwritten letter dated April 2, 1999, from retired Air Force Major Thomas Mack — who served with the Air Force Scientific Advisory Group at Groom Lake from 1975 to 1983 and again from 1988 to 1994 — states: "There was a Captain Danny Crain assigned to Q-S4 projects in the late 80's. Capt Crain was a biologist working on the R-4800 program at P-S2 complex. His assistant was Captain Arthur Price. Both were in charge of mapping alien DNA. Captain Crain developed a sequencing technique, dating found amino acids. The alien was the Quadaloid-Amos." The Mack letter is the career's principal documentary corroboration independent of Burisch's own voice, read by those who accept it as placing a "Captain Danny Crain" on Q-S4 work years before Burisch went public. Taken skeptically, it is a single handwritten note preserved only in the third-party Burisch Archive, attributed to an officer not otherwise locatable in the public record and now beyond questioning, with no chain of custody — an artifact that restates the claim rather than independently testing it.

Desert Storm deployment (1991)

In 1991 Burisch says he was cleared for a biowarfare unit and deployed to Iraq during Desert Storm as part of a black ops unit within the international coalition's zone of operations, receiving a Presidential citation for field service. Marcia McDowell described his mission as counteracting a rogue military unit's attempted use of unauthorized biological warfare agents against the Iraqi Army. Burisch has consistently declined to elaborate on this period: "I won't talk about that, because that is a military operation."

J-Rod research program (1990s)

Beginning in 1990, Burisch's primary assignment was working with Chi'el'ah, a P-52 J-Rod he describes as a post-apocalyptic descendant of humanity from approximately 52,000 years in the future. From 1994 to 1996, he conducted tissue sampling work with Chi'el'ah, co-authoring the classified report Project Aquarius Document Q-94-109A in 1994 documenting the extraterrestrial biological entity "AQ-J-ROD." After the tissue sampling concluded in 1996, he transitioned to the EBE Fresh Water Project (1996-2000), followed by concurrent assignments to the EBE Marine Project and J-Rod Project Aquarius from 1998 to 2001.

The document was subsequently leaked to McDowell by Dr. Steven Roy Mostow before Mostow's death. McDowell stated: "The Q-94 document was leaked out to me by Steven M. before his death." Burisch later explained that Mostow "shoved it through the copy machine in the clerk's office" though how it physically cleared S-4's Pan-and-Scan security protocols remained unexplained. Mostow died "probably as a result of" the leak; another original Project Aquarius team member, Robert Schwartz, was "hacked to death... by a boyfriend of his daughter." By 2009, only two of the original Aquarius team remained alive: Burisch and the former MJ-1. Burisch's own characterization of the document cuts both ways: he calls it "quite real... with all of the errors that Steven and myself... could type that day," shoved through a clerk's-office copier, and has not explained how a typo-ridden draft cleared S-4's Pan-and-Scan security. On the authentic account, those imperfections are the marks of a genuine working draft smuggled out at lethal cost; on the skeptical one, a self-described error-filled paper, said to have been produced beside a copier by two handlers who are now dead and cannot confirm it, is also what a document authored to appear leaked would look like. The Q94 document's authenticity has not been independently verified or definitively debunked.

During 1990-1996, Burisch was reportedly "deeply involved with Majestic, his work at S4, and interactions with a J-Rod, making it an 'impossibility' for him to go public at that time." In 1994, he allegedly experienced "approximately a half-hour constant download of material from a J-Rod."

Burisch's direct physical interactions with Chi'el'ah inside the containment apparatus involved extensive tissue-sampling sessions and J-Rod physiology observations during which Burisch contracted J-Rod peripheral neuropathy. Information Chi'el'ah reportedly shared with Burisch became a bargaining instrument with Majestic 12, forming a quid-pro-quo that allegedly expanded Burisch's access to the timeline and treaty system. He describes the relationship as a genuine friendship: "A human is a human is a human to me. So I had a true friendship with him."

Project Looking Glass work

During his time at S-4, Burisch reportedly worked with the Looking Glass device — a back-engineered temporal-viewing apparatus that allegedly showed probable futures. He described witnessing timelines bifurcating into survivable and catastrophic outcomes. Burisch expressed personal opposition to the program's existence: "We should have never built [the Looking Glass]."

Mars research and Eagles Disobey (1997–1998)

Between 1997 and 1998, during a period of limited work with Majestic following the conclusion of his tissue sampling work and preceding the commencement of the Marine Project and J-Rod Project Aquarius assignments, Burisch analyzed NASA's Mars imagery and discovered anomalies in the "Inca City" region. He and Marcia McDowell co-authored Eagles Disobey: The Case for Inca City, Mars under the pseudonym BJ Wolf. The publication reportedly "rattled Majestic," who demanded to know if the J-Rod had shared any insights related to Mars; Burisch refused to answer.

Project Lotus and Ganesh particle research (2001–2004)

The Project Lotus research program began in May 2001, focusing on a biological phenomenon in which micro-portals emit self-organizing cellular material when energy is applied to silicate substrates, yielding what Burisch termed the Ganesh particle. During the latter half of 2001, information concerning the future of the Lotus project was given to Burisch, and he exchanged information regarding time travel issues with Chi'el'ah. Email records from this period indicate scheduled trips to Frenchman Mountain near Area 51 and attempts at communication with "Ganesh."

Burisch allegedly successfully persuaded parties at the Tau-9 treaty negotiation to remove Lotus from the treaty agenda by using the Orion Cube to show delegates probable outcomes of its misuse.

Majestic-12 elevation

Burisch claims to have been temporarily elevated to the MJ-9 seat of Majestic 12 on a pro-tem basis as the result of an internal wager, an appointment that allegedly gave him access to Washington archives and eventually led him to nominate the first female MJ-9 member in the committee's history before Majestic 12 formally adjourned: "I was pro temp or made MJ-9 for the 12 as the result of a bet that went on within MJ-12." He describes the broader international oversight body as the Committee of the Majority, reportedly formed between 1963 and 1967 when the Soviet threat to establish a competing treaty with extraterrestrials prompted the US to internationalise the MJ-12 structure.

Public disclosure

Burisch's disclosure activities began during his active service. His earliest disclosures occurred through his relationship with Marcia McDowell, with whom he co-authored Eagles Disobey: The Case for Inca City, Mars in 1998.

Burisch says he decided to become a whistleblower in 2002, after refusing biological weapons research that his MJ-1 superiors had directed him to undertake, and disclosed to Bill Hamilton, who began systematically documenting his account.

In 1999, Bill Hamilton independently discovered the Q94 document on the internet while conducting a general search, describing it as "awfully technical" and unlike any document he had seen before. Hamilton circulated the document on the MUON mailing list but could not generate significant interest at the time.

In 2002, McDowell contacted Hamilton directly after learning of his earlier interest in the Q94 document, calling him at UCLA with an urgent plea: "Bill, I need help. I need help. Dan is in trouble." When Hamilton first met Burisch at a Las Vegas meeting arranged by McDowell, Burisch initially fled upon seeing Hamilton wearing an Air Force cap, taking all his briefcase papers and running to the elevator. After McDowell retrieved him and made proper introductions, Burisch apologized, explaining "I'm very sorry, I reacted like that. I have to watch myself." Prior to the formal 2002 sessions, McDowell had attempted to meet Burisch independently but was intercepted in a park by three figures she described as men in black: "They had the classic look. They had the classic feel. They didn't feel 'right'... It was terrifying... Instead of meeting Dan, I was met. I don't know WHAT these people were." She described their affect as rehearsed and unnatural — "They couldn't speak naturally... They walked wrong. They moved wrong. They were pale" — and fled the encounter.

The initial September 18–19, 2002 interview sessions constituted Burisch's first substantive public disclosure. On November 13, 2002, the Eagles Disobey website was archived, and Hamilton conducted in-person disclosure interviews with Burisch and McDowell. Beginning in 2003, Burisch engaged in online discussions on platforms including the GLP forum, discussing topics such as timelines, J-Rods, the Ganesh particle, the Lotus project, and MJ-12.

In early 2003, rumors circulated that Burisch had died or been silenced. McDowell (still writing as BJ Wolf) traveled to Las Vegas and, with Alan Gudaitis of the Las Vegas MUFON chapter, staked out the Frenchman Mountain complex during what she had been told was a scheduled Majestic field operation. They photographed and recorded Burisch's appearance at the site. In a February 13, 2003 dispatch to Jeff Rense, McDowell reported: "The rumors that Dan gets saluted by official personnel have also been confirmed. I have photographic proof. His driver... exited the vehicle, walked around to his door, opened it, drew herself up to attention, and snapped up a salute which she held for several seconds until he emerged from the vehicle and returned it." The driver was subsequently identified by Burisch's mother as his wife Deborah, described as "belonging to PsyOpsSec within Majestic." That the saluting "official personnel" proved to be Burisch's own wife, herself placed within Majestic, reads on the authentic account as confirmation that his household was program-embedded and, taken skeptically, as the signature of a staged tableau — a salute exchanged between spouses photographs as choreography, not as proof of rank. The dispatch described the operation as taking place near "the Stargate hill" at Frenchman Mountain.

In 2004, Burisch appeared at a Rob Simone "Disclosure Dialog" event. He presented 3D computer renderings of S-4's floor layout, described security protocols and Galileo Bay craft bays in detail, displayed a legal agreement about his academic credentials, and showed Project Lotus microscope imagery to a live audience for the first time. Under direct questioning, he confirmed being "monitored, censored, imprisoned and beaten" during his black program service, and denied ever claiming to have cured cancer — addressing a headline that had appeared in the Yellen Rebel campus newspaper at UNLV following a dispute over a taurine-chlorine study.

Burisch's disclosure involved multiple interconnected classified programs and relationships. His description of Chi'el'ah involves a temporal paradox: Chi'el'ah was present at S-4 — one of the beings recovered from a downed exotic craft — following his recovery from the 1953 Kingman crash, and also present in 1973 when Burisch was abducted at Mayfair Park — making him simultaneously Burisch's captor and his future laboratory subject. He supplied detailed clinical observations of Chi'el'ah and addressed widespread confusion between J-Rods and reptilian entities, explaining that neuropathic exacerbations cause skin changes that produce a reptilian appearance. He distinguished three categories of J-Rod-related beings present at the Tau-9 negotiations — two types of P-45 J-Rod and two P-52 J-Rod representatives — with markedly different dispositions toward present-day humans.

A photograph that circulated in connection with the J-Rod was an acknowledged special-effects fabrication that no party held to be genuine. On a counter-disclosure reading its brief promotion — and conspicuous public exposure — functioned less as evidence against Burisch than as discredit-by-association, plausibly intelligence-run, aimed at tainting both the witness and the ideas he carried; the single figure who had vouched for the image is said to have realised it was fake only through a prompt that itself bore the marks of such an operation.

Project Lotus became a central dispute at the Tau-9 treaty negotiations when the P-45 J-Rods demanded Lotus codes be included in the treaty, seeking to use the cellular regeneration research to ameliorate their own neurological deterioration. Although ordered by his superiors to provide a technical model for the negotiations, Burisch opposed giving the P-45Ks access to this technology. At Bandelier National Monument, he deliberately exploited the Orion Cube's emotional reactivity to conduct psychological warfare against the delegates, intentionally projecting catastrophic visions including imagery of them "standing on the bones of their own families." This manipulation successfully convinced the delegates to remove both Project Lotus and certain abduction authorizations from the final treaty terms, which Burisch later justified as necessary for humanity's preservation.

The Abydos stargate event — in which Burisch physically assisted Chi'el'ah's return to his own timeline ("ET went home") — occurred at the end of 2003, more than a year after his first public interviews. Burisch was arrested for violating protocol after pushing Chi'el'ah's pressurized stroller through the open Einstein-Rosen bridge field. He was subsequently beaten and accused of having been a spy: "No. I wasn't a spy. I just shoved him into the stargate and he went bye-bye." Classified operations involving Burisch thus continued well after he had begun publicly describing them.

McDowell was inducted into Majestic 12 in late 2003: she had become a problematic presence through her archival and disclosure work, and the organization opted to bring her inside rather than neutralize her. She relocated to Canada around the same period "fearing for her safety," returning in 2004.

In 2006, Burisch explained his understanding of the men in black phenomenon, distinguishing between human psychological operations and non-human entities. McDowell was also given a tour of S-4 that year and shown video recordings of Burisch's interactions with Chi'el'ah. This unusual pattern — disclosing classified information while still in service — became a central element in competing interpretations of his case. His formal discharge from Majestic service occurred on October 12, 2005, when, by his account, he was placed under recall orders, reproduced in his October 2006 affidavit, that "by order of the Majestic 12, in Formal High Session" instructed him "to present the truth of the extraterrestrial reality, as you have personally known it and yet to be established, to the population of the world," to be conducted "with the application of [his] sacred honor, without regard for personal security," and closing: "May God be with you, O Son of the Majestic! We will stand, unanimous and adjourned to your purpose" — in his telling a sanctioned mandate to reveal the truth of the extraterrestrial as he had known it, rather than an unauthorized leak. His disclosure became one of the most extensively documented whistleblower testimonies in the UFO field, spanning multiple interviews, conferences, and documentary projects from 2002 through 2024.

Michael Salla articulated the affirmative position in his 2005 book review of William Hamilton's Project Aquarius: Burisch was "still allegedly working in compartmented projects" while disclosing classified information — unusual for whistleblowers, who ordinarily come forward only after leaving service. "If Burisch's claims are true, his continued participation in highly classified projects while disclosing classified information indicate that he had an extraordinary degree of official support." This reading treats the anomaly of active-duty disclosure as evidence for, rather than against, the claims' authenticity.

Salla's own reading did not settle on a single pole: in an April 2004 article he had argued the case was "so highly contrived, that it would amount to little more than two small steps forward followed quickly by one large step back" — a disclosure architecture built around Burisch would principally serve to legitimate past Majestic 12 decisions while suppressing information about other ET contacts and factions. By 2005, Salla concluded Burisch was "unintentionally part of a psychological operation orchestrated by one or more factions within the covert world of classified EBE-related projects who wish to 'spin' public attention in a way that promotes their disclosure agenda."

This reading finds a measure of inside corroboration in Burisch's own testimony about how much he was permitted to know. He has said Majestic "were still reticent about informing me as to what the real nature of the situation was as late as 2001," restricting him to what they "considered a need-to-know situation." He has further described being deliberately misled by his own side — "I found out it was a bunch of garbage basically just to manipulate me to keep my mouth shut," after which he told his handler, "Don't lie to me anymore... I can accept that better than being lied to" — and characterized much of the public UFO record as the product of a Majestic "folkloristic unit" that "promulgated a lot of these stories" before he was sent out to publicize disclosure. On this view Burisch may have sincerely conveyed a worldview that was itself curated for him — distinct from the claim that he fabricated it.

George Knapp — investigative journalist and KLAS-TV reporter with established UFO disclosure sources — wrote the most direct published dismissal: "The 'Eagle' has crash-landed. It's just my opinion, but the name-changing, secret-spilling, tall-tale-telling UFO 'whistleblower' known as Dan Crain or Dan Burisch... is a complete goofball. He is a manipulative, egocentric, phony-baloney goofball. You can quote me."

Researchers such as Linda Moulton Howe, Kerry Cassidy and Bill Ryan of Project Camelot, who gave Burisch his broadest platform in the 2006–07 interviews, treated the case as ongoing and unresolved. Ryan, in a 2019 private discussion, offered his personal assessment after years of direct contact: "I don't believe that he ever knowingly told a lie. To me personally, I don't believe he did that... He was heartfelt, heart-centred, intelligent, funny, smart and kind." Ryan noted that at their first meeting, Burisch immediately laid down "a big pile" of documentation — papers, certificates, references — unprompted.

Later activities

Following his 2005 discharge from Majestic service, Burisch's public activities became increasingly limited. In summer 2007, he emailed contacts including Bill Ryan to announce he was being "inducted into a classified Project" and would be unavailable for six months, with automated replies confirming his absence through December 2007.

On November 11, 2007, Burisch was captured on a security camera in what supporters characterized as an outburst of frustration at being pressured to remain silent. In February 2008, he and Marcia McDowell were filmed discussing the case of a Canadian associate who had fled the United States, claiming Majestic surveillance had made it unsafe for him to return.

Documented public appearances include his 2009 participation in the Zurich conference workshop with Marcia McDowell and a 2013 recorded conversation with McDowell about "entering 2013 timeframe" Burisch's public profile declined significantly after this period. Researcher Brian Jackson's investigation "ultimately led to a one-and-a-half-hour phone call. with Dan himself in 2018."

Following his discharge, Burisch and Marcia McDowell continued Lotus research publicly, presenting at Caltech in 2008 and describing three classes of particle: Ganesh particles, Shiva portals, and Selkie guide particles. In November 2024, journalist Michael Shellenberger included Burisch's case in documentation submitted to the House Oversight Committee.
