In the early 1920s, working with physicist Paul Alfred Biefeld at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, Thomas Townsend Brown observed that high-voltage direct current applied to an asymmetric capacitor produced a net propulsive force directed from the larger negative electrode toward the smaller positive electrode — a phenomenon that became known as the Biefeld–Brown effect. Brown interpreted the force as a coupling between electromagnetism and gravity — a phenomenon he termed electrogravitics — and pursued its application to anti-gravity propulsion for the remainder of his career. Mainstream physics has attributed the observed force to corona discharge and ion wind, with vacuum chamber studies by Talley (1988) and Tajmar (2004, 2024) reporting no anomalous thrust at low pressures. Thomas Townsend Brown first observed the effect in the early 1920s, while still in high school, experimenting with Coolidge tubes — early X-ray devices containing a cathode and an anode. When he applied a high-voltage electrical charge to a Coolidge tube placed on a scale, Brown noticed a measurable difference in apparent mass depending on the tube's orientation, implying a net directional force. This discovery caused him to believe he had somehow influenced gravity electronically, and led him to design a propulsion system based on the phenomenon. Brown brought the anomaly to Paul Alfred Biefeld, his professor of physics and astronomy at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, who signed a Navy affidavit confirming he had witnessed the effect. The coupling of the two names produced the designation "Biefeld–Brown effect"; skeptical sources note that Brown attended Denison for only a year before dropping out and that, as of 2004, the university claimed to have no record of any experiments or association between Brown and Biefeld, though Denison archivists ultimately confirmed the relationship decades later.
On April 15, 1927, Brown filed his first patent — "Method of Producing Force or Motion" (GB 300311) — describing an electrical method to produce linear force, which he attributed to an interaction between electricity and gravity. In 1929, he published an article in Science and Invention magazine detailing his "gravitator," a device that produced motion without electromagnetism, gears, propellers, or wheels, using what he called "electro-gravitation." Brown claimed that the asymmetric capacitors were capable of generating fields that interacted with the Earth's gravitational pull, and envisioned a future in which gravitators would propel ocean liners and space vehicles.
Physics of the effect

The Biefeld–Brown apparatus consists of two electrodes — one small and sharp (typically positive), the other large and smooth (typically negative) — separated by an insulating material known as a high-K dielectric, which is capable of storing large amounts of electromagnetic charge. When the system is energized with high-voltage, low-current direct current, thrust is generated in the direction from the larger electrode toward the smaller one. The use of an asymmetric configuration — with the negative electrode larger than the positive electrode — allows for more thrust to be produced in the direction from the low-flux to the high-flux region compared to a conventional capacitor. These devices, designated Asymmetrical Capacitor Thrusters (ACT), produce thrust in air using electrical power without combustion or moving parts. The most effective electrode separation occurs at an electric potential gradient of approximately 10 kV/cm, just below the nominal breakdown voltage of air.
The mainstream explanation holds that corona discharge at the sharp electrode ionizes surrounding air molecules: electrons are stripped from atoms in the surrounding medium, producing a cloud of positively charged ions that are accelerated toward the opposite smooth electrode by Coulomb's law, transferring momentum to neutral air molecules along the way — the mechanism known as ion wind. This produces an equally scaled opposing force on the lower electrode, a principle also exploited in EHD thrusters, fluid pumps, and electrohydrodynamic cooling systems for electronic components. The velocity achievable by such configurations is limited by the momentum achievable by the ionized air, which is reduced by ion impact with neutral molecules.
The effect operates with either electrode polarity — the small electrode can be either positive or negative, provided the larger electrode has the opposite polarity — though experimental reports indicate slightly stronger thrust when the small electrode is positive. This asymmetry has been attributed to the differences between the ionization energy and electron affinity energy of the constituent molecules of air, and hence the ease with which ions are created at the sharp electrode.
As air pressure is reduced, several effects combine to reduce available force and momentum: fewer air molecules are ionized; fewer impacts occur between ionized and neutral particles; and the breakdown voltage of air decreases. Once the system enters the glow discharge regime, the air becomes conductive — and although applied voltage propagates at nearly the speed of light, the movement of the conductors themselves becomes negligible, yielding a Coulomb force and change of momentum so small as to be effectively zero. Below the glow discharge region the breakdown voltage increases again, while the number of potential ions decreases and collision probability drops; experiments at very low pressure have both produced and failed to produce thrust, with positive results typically requiring very large voltages and always producing forces small compared to atmospheric-pressure measurements.
Brown's electrogravitic interpretation held that the effect represented a genuine coupling between electromagnetism and gravity — not merely an aerodynamic phenomenon. The critical test was whether thrust persists in a vacuum chamber, where there is no air to ionize and therefore no ion wind mechanism is available. The material of the dielectric was also significant: magnesium bismuth — a high-K dielectric — appeared repeatedly in Brown's experimental notes as producing superior thrust results. Brown's supporters argue that the thrust persisted under high vacuum at a reduced but measurable level, that its direction correlated with electrode geometry rather than ambient air density, and that its dielectric dependence suggested a genuine electrogravitational coupling.
Vacuum chamber experiments
The question of whether the Biefeld–Brown effect persists in vacuum has been the central experimental controversy since Brown first proposed it.
In 1956, Brown conducted tests at the Montgolfier estate in France. His biographer, Paul Schatzkin, recorded Brown's associate on a phone call — made shortly before the associate's death — stating that "the tests were very tricky, but in the end we got it to work." The following year, Brown performed experiments at the University of North Carolina under physicist Agnew Bahnson at the Institute of Field Physics. Video footage exists of Brown working on his vacuum experiments in a back room at the same facility where the 1957 Chapel Hill Conference on quantum gravity was being held — attended by Freeman Dyson, Richard Feynman, John Wheeler, and Bryce DeWitt. Brown was reportedly filmed popping champagne after one of these tests — interpreted as celebration of a successful vacuum result, the second such test he had conducted.
In 1965, Brown filed U.S. patent 3,187,206, which explicitly claimed that a net force on the asymmetric capacitor exists even in a vacuum. Skeptical commentators have noted that little independent experimental evidence validates this claim.
Subsequent independent vacuum tests have not confirmed Brown's claims. In 1988, R. L. Talley at the Air Force Research Laboratory measured no thrust from electrodes similar to Brown's operating at 10−6 torr vacuum under direct current, though he did observe force during electrical breakdown when current was flowing. In 2004, Martin Tajmar enclosed the electrode apparatus in a box suspended on wires — a configuration designed to exclude any contribution from corona wind — and observed no linear thrust. A 2014 review in IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science by Fylladitakis and colleagues concluded that Brown had initially misinterpreted the phenomenon for an anti-gravity effect and that this interpretation had been scientifically disproved. In 2024, Tajmar published a further study in Scientific Reports using improved instrumentation and again found no coupling between gravity and electromagnetism with steady fields.
Researchers sympathetic to Brown dispute the conclusion of these mainstream replications. Science communicator and researcher Jeremy Rys, who has operated a private anti-gravity research laboratory and organized a propulsion conference, reported that his team replicated the Biefeld–Brown effect in a vacuum, a result he argued has no mainstream explanation. Rys has also described a 30–40 person international team working on anti-gravity experiments with private funding over a five-year period.

In his 1960 patent, Brown referred to the phenomenon as "electrokinesis," linking it to the field of electrohydrodynamics (EHD). Tom Valone later published two volumes on the effect and its applications, terming the pulsed high-voltage variant "pulsed electrogravitics."
Classification and government interest
Brown's most dramatic demonstrations for Navy officials — tethered disc-shaped devices flying on wire guides at high voltage — were classified after the demonstrations. His 1952 Project Winterhaven proposal to the Office of Naval Research called for a classified development program to produce electrogravitic flight-capable platforms — a Mach-3 electrogravitic disc aircraft exploiting the effect at scale. Wilbert Smith, running Canada's Project Magnet, reportedly confirmed that UAP-related propulsion research was classified at two levels above the hydrogen bomb. A 1956 report by Aviation Studies International Ltd., Electrogravitics Systems, described the effect as the basis for a new propulsion breakthrough and noted that major aerospace companies were privately investigating it.
A 1971 Australian Joint Intelligence Organisation document — cited by David Grusch and described as "verified and real" — named the University of North Carolina as one of several identified "outposts of anti-gravity research" and stated that the CIA's Office of Scientific Intelligence was coordinating this work. The document was authored by Harry Turner, described as the head of Australia's nuclear division. Brown's supporters note that he "had a James Bond spy thing going on" alongside his scientific work, with his daughter confirming active government intelligence involvement in his career. Proponents argue that this classification regime is responsible for the absence of publicly funded replication of Brown's vacuum experiments since the early 1950s. The alleged suppression of the effect has been identified by some researchers as one of the core mechanisms by which advanced propulsion derived from retrieved non-human craft has been kept from public scientific knowledge.
Northrop and B-2 connection
In the mid-1960s, Brown's research at Guidance Technologies in Santa Monica was funded by Floyd Odlum, then the majority owner of Northrop (prior to its merger with Grumman). In late 1967, Guidance Technologies shut down, declaring its results had failed. Three months later, in early 1968, Northrop published a paper titled Electro Aerodynamics in Supersonic Flow, paying explicit homage to electrohydrodynamics and Brown's work; Northrop retracted the accompanying press release but the paper remained.
In 1992, Bill Scott wrote in Aviation Week that the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber "surfs its own wave using the Biefeld–Brown effect." British aviation journalist Bill Gunston wrote in Air International that he was "familiar with the rudiments of Townsend Brown's work" but would refrain from discussing "millions of volts charged positive to millions of volts charged negative on the trailing edge of the wing of the B-2 stealth bomber" — adding that he did not wish to "end up in the Tower of London."
Modern research
Charles Buhler, described as the lead electrostatics scientist at NASA Kennedy Space Center, attributes his own research directly to Brown's work. Buhler's company, Exodus Space, develops electrostatic thrusters, and Buhler has stated on record that the forces observed are not conventional electrostatic forces. Buhler's research has updated Brown's approach: rather than requiring megavoltage, electric field strength at kilovolt levels is identified as the critical parameter for producing thrust.
David Chester, a quantum gravity research scientist, has proposed that the physics underlying UAP propulsion is consistent with electrogravitics extended into the framework of quantum gravity — specifically, that manipulation of spacetime curvature at the quantum level could account for observed UAP characteristics such as instantaneous acceleration and the absence of sonic booms.
In the hobbyist and open-source engineering communities, devices called lifters or ionocrafts — consisting of balsa wood frames with tin foil at the bottom and copper wire at the top — demonstrate the atmospheric ion wind component of the effect and are widely replicated.
The 2024 Tajmar study in Scientific Reports remains the most recent peer-reviewed investigation, finding no evidence of electrogravitic coupling under steady-field conditions.
