Stanford UAP experiencer brain study

A research program to examine MRI scans of military, diplomatic, and civilian personnel who reported contact with unidentified aerial phenomena or related anomalous phenomena was conducted by Garry Nolan and colleagues at Stanford University after the personnel were referred to Nolan by representatives of the CIA and an aerospace company.

Cohort

Of approximately 100 patients whose records Nolan reviewed, the majority turned out to be early Havana syndrome cases — individuals who had been subjected to what Nolan characterizes as directed energy, microwave, or sound-wave weapons. About ten patients in the group did not match the Havana syndrome profile; several of them claimed their condition had begun after contact with a UAP.

Basal ganglia finding

Working with the MRI data, Nolan and colleagues discovered an unusual feature in many of the subjects: an enriched, MRI-dense region in the basal ganglia — specifically the head of the caudate nucleus and putamen — that initially appeared to be damage but on closer examination proved to be living tissue, indicating elevated neural density rather than injury. Contrary to the older understanding of the basal ganglia as a motor-control region, recent literature at the time suggested it functions as a "brain within the brain" — a goal-processing system involved in planning, intuition, and integration of sensory information subservient to executive function.

Diana Walsh Pasulka, discussing the study on the Danny Jones Podcast, characterized the subjects as "high functioning people who are downloading information that's really helpful, generally technologies," and identified "the caudate putamen, the part of the brain that he was looking at" as the specific region of interest.

Jeffrey Long, an NDE researcher, also discussed the findings on the Danny Jones Podcast, noting that Nolan "scanned their brains and tried to find any kind of correlating evidence and what he did find was that there was a specific part of the brain in the caudate... the neurons in this basal ganglia are far more dense than the average person." Long raised the scientific question of directionality — whether the elevated density predisposed individuals to anomalous experiences, or whether the experiences themselves produced the neural development.

Heritability

The feature appeared to be heritable: Nolan found it in himself and in members of his own family, as well as in husband-and-wife pairs within the original cohort. He estimates the feature occurs in roughly one in 200 to one in 300 individuals generally, and interprets it as a marker of heightened sensitivity to anomalous information in the environment — a form of higher-functioning pattern recognition rather than any paranormal ability. He cautions that the finding was over-interpreted by the UAP community as suggesting subjects could "talk to UFOs."
