Research on Chi'el'ah at S-4

Research on Chi'el'ah at S-4 is the program of direct tissue sampling, neurological diagnosis, attempted treatment of J-Rod peripheral neuropathy, and direct communication conducted on the P-52 J-Rod being known as Chi'el'ah at the S-4 facility at Papoose Lake, Nevada. The program spanned from Chi'el'ah's arrival at S-4 through the tissue-sampling campaign associated with Project Aquarius, with Dan Burisch's direct-contact sessions running c. 1994–1996 as described in his testimony and documented in the Project Aquarius Document Q-94-109A.

The Clean Sphere

Chi'el'ah was housed, and all sampling and contact sessions were conducted, inside an environmental biocontainment chamber known as the Clean Sphere — a highly pressurized, hydrogen-atmosphere sphere in the underground biological laboratory on Level 4–5 of S-4, matched to J-Rod physiology rather than to human occupants. The chamber sat beneath a viewing gallery from which Majestic 12 and Department of Defense staff observed sessions through cameras and observation windows; Burisch recalled first seeing Chi'el'ah "through the glass from the gallery," where "he looked like a bug to me."

The illustrations Dan Burisch provided to investigator Michael Schratt, published by Open Minds in 2010, document the sphere's upper floor, interior lighting configuration, observation windows, and a scissor lift used to raise and lower access within the chamber. Its pressurization system included a repression valve that could be fired to change the internal pressure, causing "mild to moderate intumescence" in Chi'el'ah — a pain-compliance mechanism available to the gallery crew.

Scientists entered the sphere through a pressurized gantry in a positive-pressure BSL-4 suit, tethered constantly to an external buffer supply rather than carrying an internal backpack — an arrangement Burisch likened to being "damn close to" a glove-box. A breakdown of the sphere's strict positioning protocols during one session produced the Chi'el'ah–Burisch Clean Sphere incident.

Personnel

The principal scientific team for the tissue-sampling program consisted of at least two scientists, the original team leader Dr. Steven Roy Mostow and Dan Burisch. Chi'el'ah eventually rejected Mostow and demanded Dan Burisch enter the sphere for tissue sampling instead, requiring Burisch to be rapidly promoted to the lead position. Entry required scientists to suit up in a positive-pressure biosafety suit and enter via a pressurized gantry, with specific entry, sampling, communication, exit, and debrief sequences. Burisch recounted that his physical interactions with Chi'el'ah involved formally rigid communication protocols and covert telepathic communication in the Clean Sphere environment for safe contact. Additionally, Burisch was instructed not to communicate directly with Chi'el'ah for certain periods as part of the experimental protocols. Strict movement and positioning rules governed all sessions: Chi'el'ah and the scientist maintained specified relative positions, any movement by Chi'el'ah toward the scientist constituted a protocol breach, and any instinctive movement by the scientist in response was equally prohibited. Support staff observed through cameras and a viewing apparatus from outside the sphere throughout each session.

Research chronology

Tissue sampling from Chi'el'ah spanned approximately two years, ending in 1996, with the Q-94 document bearing the 1994 date representing the mid-point of this period. Over this interval Burisch reported taking more than 200 tissue samples using a Pressurized Induction Needle System (PINS) device, producing the Q-94 document as primary investigator — a report Bill Hamilton described as "the most technical document I had ever seen," containing "a lot of biological, microbiological terms in it." Prior research teams — including the team led by Steven M. — had worked with Chi'el'ah before Burisch assumed the lead role. Burisch's genomic and glycoprotein expertise formed the scientific foundation for the diagnostic work that followed.[citation needed]

Molecular biology and diagnostic work

The core scientific problem confronting the research team was diagnosing and attempting to treat Chi'el'ah's peripheral neuropathy, the results of which were documented in the Project Aquarius Document Q-94-109A — formally identified in Q-94 as a paraprotein-related monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) with a CMT1A-like demyelinating presentation linked to PMP22 overexpression on chromosomes 5 and 17. Tissue samples were extracted from Chi'el'ah during these sessions for laboratory analysis. A Cockayne syndrome-type presentation and supercoiled triplex DNA further complicated the pathology; Chi'el'ah's J-Rod physiology — adapted to underground conditions over tens of thousands of years on Timeline 2 — made conventional gene-therapy approaches impractical. Attempted immunotherapy approaches — including T-cell immunosuppression, plasma exchange, and viral transfection — produced only minimal symptomatic relief. Hyperbaric hydrogen therapy provided temporary symptomatic relief.

Entrainment and habituation

Repeated direct-contact sessions produced a gradual entrainment effect between Burisch and Chi'el'ah mediated by Chi'el'ah's specialized audiosensory brain organ — analogous to the acoustic melon of a dolphin — which Chi'el'ah used to communicate with other J-Rods by thumping: "As our familiarity to one another increased, our ability to disconnect from one another decreased... I could still feel that audiosensory area of his thumping me." This accumulating habituation was the precondition for the incident in which Chi'el'ah broke protocol, climbed on Burisch, and transmitted an extended body of information — the Chi'el'ah–Burisch Clean Sphere incident — whose contents included intelligence about Project Looking Glass and Majestic 12 operations — leaving Burisch comatose for several days and triggering an emergency response.

Videotaped record

Marci McDowell confirmed in a sworn affidavit that she personally viewed "high resolution (full color) coherent motion digital and videotaped material" of Chi'el'ah — filmed during his residence at S-4 — when shown this material at the facility in 2006. Burisch corroborated this in his 2009 Zurich workshop presentation.
