The Jonathan Reed home video of Freddie is a short video recording that Jonathan Reed — a former developmental psychologist turned contactee — said he made of the small non-human intelligent being he called "Freddie" at his home near Seattle, Washington in October 1996, the being laid out on a flat surface amid the Mylar foil in which he had wrapped it. According to Reed, the being had been incapacitated during the Jonathan Reed forest incident in the Cascade Mountains near Snoqualmie Pass and revived at his home over the following days; he filmed it believing it to be dead, and said he learned only years later that on the recording it appears to blink its eyes and move its facial muscles, which he took as a sign it had still been alive. The surviving, circulating footage is a single continuous run of about eight and a half minutes, made up of eight distinct camera shots separated by hard cuts, and carries no spoken narration — its only audio is heavy breathing. Together with the Jonathan Reed forest video, the Photographs of Freddie, and the audio recording of Freddie, it is one of the central pieces of documentary evidence Reed offered for the 1996 encounter.
The video's authenticity is disputed. Investigators with the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, formerly the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group, concluded the material was fabricated — citing the absence of any independent witness to the filming and identifying Reed's legal name as John Bradley Rutter — and the Syfy series Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files found that the home video could be reproduced with a fabricated figure under controlled lighting. A recurring counter-argument holds that the slow blinking and faint facial movement visible in the footage would be difficult to obtain from a static prop, and that an animatronic lifelike enough to produce them would have been prohibitively expensive for a private hoaxer. Reed has said the surviving run is only a fragment, the original recording having been longer before most of it was taken with the rest of his physical evidence.
Description
The surviving, circulating footage is a single continuous run of about eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds, preserved in a best-quality digital copy of roughly 640 by 480 pixels, and is made up of eight distinct camera shots separated by hard cuts. Reed said the original recording was longer and that most of it was among the material taken by the individuals who had presented themselves as MUFON investigators — in the case's shadow government reading, agents who located him through the very channel to which he had reported the encounter. The recording is low-resolution, hand-held video shot on a Nikon eight-millimetre camcorder; because its viewfinder was a one-inch black-and-white display, Reed said he did not notice during filming that the being appeared to move, a detail third-party viewers pointed out to him years later. The footage carries no spoken narration; its only audio is heavy breathing, with none of the spoken communication-session material that belongs to the separate audio recording. The close-up photographs of the being's head come from this home session rather than from the forest footage taken at the incident site.
Throughout the run the subject is the small, dark — near-black — smooth, hairless humanoid form Reed called Freddie, lying amid crumpled gold-and-silver Mylar "space-blanket" foil, its large domed cranium the most prominent feature; a gloved hand, Reed's, repeatedly enters the frame to manipulate it.
The run opens, in a first shot of about three and a quarter minutes, on a full-length, body-sized bundle loosely wrapped in gold Mylar on a flat surface, a dark band cinched across its middle; the camera surveys it from the side and above, and at roughly the fifty-second mark a long thin rod or pointer is laid alongside and used to prod the bundle, after which the camera pushes in, the foil is opened, and a smooth dark rounded mass — the head and torso — fills the frame and is explored slowly from several angles. A hard cut brings a second shot of about fifty seconds: a close study of a dark, smooth, hairless domed head in profile, into which Reed's gloved hand enters to touch and steady the head and the area around the face and eye against the foil. A brief third shot of about sixteen seconds runs the hand along the being's dark back, a faint surface texture or ridging visible, before re-establishing the head and body on the foil, and a fuller side-and-rear view of about fourteen seconds — the fourth shot — gives the clearest overall silhouette: a large domed head, a narrow neck, and sloping shoulders and upper back against the gold foil.
An extended profile study of about a minute and a quarter — the fifth shot — is the most face-legible passage: a hand reaches in partway through, and the front of the head resolves into a face, a bulbous cranium tapering to a small facial area, with a bright highlight consistent with an eye. In the sixth shot, of about fifty-four seconds, Reed's gloved hand works at the front of the head, poking and prying and appearing to hold open a facial feature; this is the passage from which the widely circulated still of the being's eye being held open by a hand is taken. The head is then shown from another angle on a more crumpled tan-and-foil surface in a seventh shot of about thirty-eight seconds, the hand lifting it, pointing at it, and turning it, with a second dark mass partly visible at the edge of the frame, before the recording closes, in an eighth shot of about a minute and eight seconds, on very close, dark views of the black body and head deep in the crumpled gold-foil nest, the dark mass filling the centre of the frame, consistent with the body being re-covered as the footage ends.
Reed stated that it was only years after the footage was made that he was informed by a reviewer that the being appeared to blink its eyes and move its facial muscles in the video — details he said he had not noticed while filming because his attention had been fixed on keeping the being from attacking him: "I wasn't the one who pointed out that he was moving and his eyes were moving. Somebody else who saw the video actually pointed that out to me years later."
Reviving in the garage
According to Reed, after returning from the forest incident he placed the being's body in a chest freezer at his home. On approximately the third day, Reed had arranged for a professor he knew from the University of Washington to come and examine the body, and he set up a table and lights in his garage for the visit. The professor cancelled. When Reed went back to the garage to put the table and lights away, he heard a sound from inside the freezer; he opened the lid and found the being moving, having displaced the thermal blanket covering it and shifting an arm. Reed stated he "slammed the door of the freezer and ran" into his house. He subsequently described the being as screaming when he opened the freezer. The home video was recorded over the days that followed, while Reed kept the being at his home.
In a later retelling on Art Bell's Dark Matter radio program, Reed gave additional detail: he had taken out a folding table and a light in the garage specifically for the anticipated visit, and when the professor cancelled he was in the process of "putting away the table, the folding table, and the light" when he heard the scratching sound from inside the freezer. Reed said that when he opened the freezer the being had unwound itself from the thermal blanket, stuck its head out, and begun screaming at him; on a later visit he found it had returned to the freezer of its own accord and was making "chirpy, squeaky sounds kind of almost like a bird or a dolphin sound."
Provenance and presentation
Reed showed the video at UFO conferences, including the International UFO Congress, and in presentations by the Mexican broadcaster Jaime Maussan in Mexico, and it is described in the 2000 book LINK: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey, which he co-authored with Robert Raith. The material first reached a wide public in November 1998, when Raith contacted Coast to Coast AM and Art Bell aired excerpts and posted associated stills; Bell scanned the original Kodak 35 mm photographs himself and broadcast them through his website's studio camera, telling listeners he was posting them "in order that you might know for sure that I am not just dealing with computer generated images." Reed's own spoken narration of the footage — delivered over the video at conference screenings — and the recorded communication sessions are separate items from the video itself, which carries only the breathing audio.
Authenticity
The most-discussed feature of the footage is the apparent slow blinking of the being's eye and movement of its pupil during the examination. In a 2025 video essay, the YouTube channel Polarity said that close inspection of the original footage appears to show the being's eyes blinking slowly — an observation that, if accurate, would indicate the being was alive when it was filmed, consistent with Reed's account that "Freddie" survived the encounter and revived in his freezer: "if you actually go back to part one and look at the footage of Jonathan filming this entity on the floor of his garage, you actually see it blinking slowly. So he actually realized after the fact when he thought this thing was dead, it wasn't." On the We Are Not Alone podcast it was argued that the visible blinking and pupil movement would rule out a fabricated prop, and that an animatronic detailed enough to reproduce them would have been prohibitively expensive for a private hoaxer. A recurring point among those who read the footage as staged, by contrast, is that the being's head appears disconnected or abnormally stiff during the examination. Maussan promoted the case, describing the supporting witness testimony — including that of Harold Chacon — as among the most extraordinary evidence he had encountered in the investigation of the phenomenon. The television program Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files (Syfy, 2010) examined Reed's footage and concluded that the home video could be replicated using practical effects and props — a fabricated alien figure placed on a surface under controlled lighting.
Investigators at the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, formerly the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group, examined the video and photograph and concluded the materials were fabricated, citing inconsistencies in the figure's appearance and the absence of any corroborating witness to the filming. The group further held that Reed's real identity was John Bradley Rutter and that his account contained several factual impossibilities — among them that Rutter was allergic to animals and had never owned a dog, contradicting the central claim that his dog Suzy had been killed by the being.
