Rendlesham Forest craft
The Rendlesham Forest craft is a triangular object reportedly encountered on the forest floor during the first night of the Rendlesham Forest incident on 26 December 1980 by USAF Staff Sergeant Jim Penniston. Penniston described the craft as approximately three metres tall and three metres wide at the base, with no visible landing gear — "it seemed like she was on fixed legs" — its surface "like a smooth, opaque, black glass" that was warm to the touch. The hull was covered in hieroglyphic-like characters, which Penniston sketched in his field notebook. When Penniston placed his hand on the surface for an extended period, he experienced what he described as a telepathic download of binary code.
The craft departed silently, manoeuvring between trees before accelerating away at high speed. It left three indentations in the ground arranged in a triangular pattern, broken branches at height, and elevated radiation readings at the landing site. Suffolk Constabulary officers attributed the indentations to animal diggings.
Penniston's companion John Burroughs did not recall seeing a craft. Base commander Colonel Ted Conrad stated he had interviewed Penniston at the time and no such encounter was mentioned. A sculpture modelled on witness sketches of the craft was installed on the Forestry Commission's UFO Trail in Rendlesham Forest in 2014.
