Dream contact

Dream contact is the reception of information, instruction, or direct interaction with non-human intelligent beings or other non-physical entities during sleep, with the contactee's body and consciousness remaining integrated (in contrast to dream travel, in which consciousness departs the body during sleep). It is documented across contactee accounts, shamanic traditions, and military remote viewing precursor accounts, and operates through the altered brainwave states that occur naturally during sleep.

Phenomenology

SunBow, who describes ongoing contact with the Sasquatch people, characterizes the reception of content from non-physical intelligence as "information downloads": "Telepathic communication, for me, is a soul to soul connection... We call these information downloads. Each time I had these experiences it keeps working for a while before you can assimilate, decode it, understand, and then express it." SunBow places dream-state telepathic download alongside rather than within out-of-body experiences, categorizing contact as occurring variously "in the physical, some in the astral plane, out of body experiences. And also telepathy."

Brain-state context

The Monroe Institute's work on altered states identifies the theta brainwave range (4–8 Hz) — which occurs naturally during hypnagogia and REM sleep — as the frequency band most associated with psychic receptivity, and the basis for the Institute's Hemi-Sync protocols. Angela Ford, a Project Stargate remote viewer, describes this correspondence as the operative mechanism: "It's the mechanism in the brain. It's a mechanism the brain has to work a certain way for us to go out of body. And that's what the Hemi-Sync or the sounds of the — that's what the Monroe Institute was all about. Teaching people how to go out of body and what frequency does the brain need to be so you can go out of body?"
