Paranormal investigation
Paranormal investigation encompasses the methods, protocols, and institutional frameworks used to study events and entities that fall outside the explanatory scope of conventional science — including unidentified aerial phenomena, extraterrestrial contact, remote viewing, psychokinesis, near-death experiences, and anomalous material effects. It is not a single settled discipline: practitioners range from parapsychologists and defense-contract scientists to ufologists, investigative journalists, and independent field researchers, and there is no agreed-upon boundary between what counts as paranormal, what counts as genuinely unexplained, and what has simply not been reclassified by mainstream science. That definitional instability is itself a feature of the field.
Paranormal investigation is distinct from parapsychology (the academic discipline centred on experimental testing of psychic phenomena under controlled conditions) and from paranormal (the category of phenomena studied). The distinction is funding- and methodology-based: parapsychology at Stanford Research Institute, Princeton, and Duke University was Congressionally funded academic research operating under blind-target experimental protocols; paranormal investigation is the broader methodological category that includes funded academic work but also encompasses field investigators, journalists, and classified programmes operating outside the academic pipeline.
Methods
Witness interview and testimony-collection is the most common method across the field — applied by journalists, ufologists, abduction researchers using hypnotic regression, and academic field investigators alike. Other principal methods include:
- Remote viewing — the trained use of consciousness to perceive distant targets, operationalized at Stanford Research Institute by Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ and, through Project Stargate, used for over twelve hundred intelligence tasks across roughly fifteen years;
- Field investigation — on-site data collection at locations where anomalous events have been reported (the AAWSAP's 2008–2010 work at Skinwalker Ranch being the largest-scale modern government example);
- Instrumental measurement — radar, infrared, electromagnetic monitoring, and radiation detection, now pursued at scale by the Galileo Project under Avi Loeb at Harvard University;
- Material analysis — applied to alleged crash debris, alien implants, and biological specimens by researchers including Garry Nolan.
Investigators and institutions
Prominent paranormal investigators active in the modern era include George Knapp, Jacques Vallée, John Keel, Bill Hamilton (ufologist), William Moore (UFO researcher), and Robert Wood (researcher). Institutional contexts include classified military programs (Project Blue Book, AATIP, AAWSAP, AARO, Project Stargate), government-funded academic research (Stanford Research Institute, Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research), private scientific initiatives (Galileo Project, SCU), and independent researchers working without institutional backing. The relationship between levels is frequently adversarial: classified programs withhold data from academic researchers and independent investigators.
Pseudoscience status
Mainstream science classifies paranormal investigation as pseudoscience, holding that the phenomena either do not exist or are adequately explained by conventional causes; researchers investigating paranormal claims face career damage, loss of funding, and professional ostracism. Scientists including Garry Nolan and Avi Loeb have argued the counterposition — that the stigma attached to the subject prevents rather than protects scientific rigor, and that the refusal to investigate is itself a failure of the scientific method.
