Missing time
Missing time is a phenomenon reported in alien abduction accounts in which the experiencer becomes aware of an unexplained gap in memory — typically ranging from minutes to hours or days — during or immediately following a close encounter with unidentified aerial phenomena or non-human intelligent beings. Across hundreds of documented cases, the gap is typically detected not by conscious memory of an event but by the experiencer discovering that they arrived at a destination significantly later than they should have, with no subjective sense of the intervening hours having passed.
Mechanism hypotheses
Proposed mechanisms for the memory gap include electromagnetic interference with hippocampal memory consolidation, chemical sedation, direct neural suppression technology, and — in consciousness-based models — a temporary shift in the abductee's density or vibrational frequency that prevents ordinary memory encoding. A minority position proposed by Whitley Strieber holds that missing time represents a genuine discontinuity in linear time rather than simple memory suppression. In secret space program accounts the gap is attributed to pharmacological or classified neurological technology — so-called "blank slating" — applied at the conclusion of operations to prevent conscious recollection.
Relationship to screen memories
Screen memories — false memories implanted to conceal the actual content of the encounter — are a related but distinct mechanism proposed to explain cases where some memory exists for the missing interval but the recovered content is clearly anomalous (a memory of seeing owls, deer, or bright lights that does not account for the full gap). Under hypnotic regression, the screen dissolves and the actual sequence of events is often recovered — boarding a craft, medical examination, return.
Regression hypnotherapy
Hypnotic regression — placing the subject in a deeply relaxed trance state and directing attention to the missing interval — remains the primary methodology for recovering abduction content from missing-time gaps. Subjects typically enter the missing interval and narrate a coherent sequence of events involving non-human beings, craft interiors, and procedural examinations, with strong emotional affect (fear, wonder, confusion) inconsistent with confabulated or fantasy material. The reliability of hypnotically recovered memory remains contested, with critics arguing that suggestion can produce subjectively authentic false memories and proponents citing cross-case consistency among independent witnesses as evidence against suggestion-based explanation.
Military abduction context
Missing time has also been reported in MILAB (military abduction) contexts, in which the abduction is conducted by human military or intelligence operatives rather than — or in addition to — non-human entities. Military-context gaps are sometimes reported to extend far beyond the minutes-to-hours range typical of ET abduction accounts, in some cases lasting weeks or months — a duration suggesting programmatic rather than single-incident suppression.
