UFO crash recovery
UFO crash recovery — also called UFO crash retrieval — is the alleged covert recovery, by military and intelligence units, of non-human craft that have come down in a UFO crash, together with the bodies and in some accounts the living occupants of the non-human intelligent beings aboard, and the passing of the hardware to aerospace contractors for reverse engineering. It is the crash-driven part of UFO recovery, which also takes in recoveries from controlled landings, the seabed and handovers by aligned non-human powers.
David Grusch, a former intelligence officer, told the House Oversight Committee in July 2023 that he was informed of a multi-decade crash retrieval and reverse-engineering program and denied access to it; he said that "biologics came with some of these recoveries", an assessment he attributed to people with direct knowledge, while telling the committee he had not witnessed any of the bodies himself. Clifford Stone, a retired U.S. Army sergeant, says he took part in recoveries over some twenty years and saw living and dead entities at the sites, and the attorney Daniel Sheehan says the United States has verified nine craft in its possession, Russia at least one and China one.
Sean Kirkpatrick, then director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), had told Congress there was "no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity or of off-world technology brought to the attention of the office", which Grusch answered was "not accurate" because some of the roughly thirty people who had gone to AARO were people he had also interviewed. AARO's later history of government UAP investigations assessed the claim of a hidden reverse-engineering program as "circular reporting from a group of individuals who believe this to be the case, despite the lack of any evidence" — a reading that requires Grusch's interviewees, Stone and the other witnesses to be repeating one another rather than reporting separate access. Steven Greer adds a different caution: that 80 per cent or more of the UFOs people see are human-built, and that even members of the retrieval teams he works with cannot always tell a downed human-made craft from a non-human one until they are close to it.
Retrieval units and procedure
Units and programs
According to William Cooper, the earliest retrieval units were "Blue Teams" assembled under Project Grudge to recover crashed discs and dead or living non-human entities, and these evolved into Alpha Teams under Project POUNCE, the dedicated crash retrieval program above Project Blue Book.
Stone describes a second line of descent. In January 1953 the Air Force created the 4602nd Air Intelligence Service Squadron (AISS), an elite unit whose wartime mission was field exploitation of downed enemy aircraft, personnel and documents; with no peacetime mission at its inception, it was assigned to field investigations of UFO reports involving military personnel and trained observers such as astronomers, and under it the AISS created Project Blue Fly, unknown to Project Blue Book, for the immediate recovery of downed aircraft or objects of unknown origin. Blue Fly was to recover objects of unknown origin that fell to Earth; it was expanded in 1957 into Project Moondust, the overall field-exploitation program for non-U.S. space objects and objects of unknown origin, whose recovery teams are known as Blue Fly teams and number between three and fifteen members. A 1961 U.S. Air Force document states: "Blue Fly: Operation Blue Fly has been established to facilitate expeditious delivery to Foreign Technology Division of Moon Dust or other items of great technological intelligence interest"; a declassified Defense Intelligence Agency report from 1967 refers to Moon Dust in connection with UAP evidence gathering in Morocco, and a 1965 report is titled "Fragment Metal, Recovered in the Republic of the Congo, Origin Believed to Be an Unidentified Flying Object." Stone says that "under Moon Dust, under Blue Fly, we have recovered alien debris, not of this Earth."
Stone says the Air Force acknowledged in 1987 that Blue Fly and Moondust had had their names changed, and that when Congress then asked for documentation the Air Force replied that all records on both operations had been destroyed — although the files were under active FOIA appeal, which he says legally prohibited their destruction.
Detachment 35
Stone says U.S. Air Force Detachment 35 collected data, photographs, reports and physical evidence relating to UFO cases, and that between 1947 and 1952 files from early crash retrieval events, including the Roswell incident, were transferred to it from the Army Counter Intelligence Corps. He says he personally saw portions of the Detachment 35 folder listing UFO cases and charges the Air Force intelligence community with destroying the documents to prevent public knowledge of the Roswell crashes.
Field procedure
Stone says a retrieval was run like a nuclear, biological or chemical accident response, a field in which the Army sent him to school: the debris was extracted "quietly behind the scenes", under an officially sanctioned deception program such as a bogus news release if one was needed. A craft moved by truck was tracked, with a shipping document carrying a number and a code word for the crew to call if the vehicle broke down, and a specialised team was held ready for the biological contamination risk. Stone also describes training to give first aid to injured non-human entities, and a manual covering 57 species for that purpose.
Paola Harris, who co-edited Stone's book, relays that his first confirmed deployment came in 1969, at age eighteen, to Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, where he found four dead entities, two inside a downed craft and two outside, and that after he first met a colonel at fourteen, when he tried to buy a UFO magazine, the same man followed him through much of his life. Harris also relays that Stone was deployed to at least three crash sites in Vietnam, where he found beings he described as amphibian, four to five feet tall with gills, and that he released a living medium Gray held at the Pentagon by cutting a security fence, for which he was accused of aiding the enemy.
Andy Pero, a super-soldier whistleblower, claims to have served as a mind-controlled Montauk Project operative on crash-retrieval Delta teams — the forward security element that secured a crash site before recovery specialists arrived — with memories of the deployments afterwards erased.
Non-human search and rescue
Harris relays that, according to Stone, retrieval teams were not always first on scene: so many retrievals had been done that the teams had enough bodies, and in at least one incident, in Georgia, they left the bodies out overnight so that the beings could collect their own dead the next day.
Downing of craft
Daniel Sheehan says the programs are not passive: they have "developed technology to knock some of these things down", capable of disabling a craft and forcing it to the ground. Jason Sands, a claimant who says he met a non-human being on a test range, offers as his opinion — not from personal experience — that many drones are being flown because of the danger of a crash, and that a non-human intelligence aware of directed-energy weapons that affect UAP would stop putting crews aboard.
Reported retrievals
Retrievals reported in the literature, from the recoveries attributed to the 1940s to the 1990s, include the following.
| Date | Location | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1941 | Cape Girardeau, Missouri | Deathbed testimony of Rev. William Huffman describes disc-shaped craft, three non-human bodies, military personnel with secrecy orders.[33] |
| August 1945 | San Antonio, New Mexico | Twenty days after the first nuclear detonation; avocado-shaped craft on the Padilla ranch; nine-year-old Jose Padilla and seven-year-old Remigio Baca witnessed two small non-human entities near the wreckage; Silumin bracket retrieved from inside the craft; a 30-foot oval at the site where nothing grew for seventy years. Documented by Jacques Vallée and Paola Harris in Trinity: The Best-Kept Secret (2021).[34] |
| July 1947 | Roswell, New Mexico | Multiple military witnesses; Walter Haut press release; subsequent cover story of a weather balloon and later Project Mogul.[33] |
| March 1948 | Aztec, New Mexico | 100-foot disc, 16 bodies; described in Frank Scully's Behind the Flying Saucers (1950) and subsequently by Philip Corso and Michael Wolf.[33] |
| December 1965 | Kecksburg, Pennsylvania | Acorn-shaped object recovered by the Army; NASA FOIA requests produced incomplete records.[33] |
| January 1996 | Varginha, Brazil | Multiple entities recovered; Brazilian military and hospital witnesses.[33] |
| Early 1997 | Peru | U.S. Marine and Department of Energy personnel; summarised below.[35] |
1997 Peru: Operation Laser Strike
Main article:
1997 Peru UFO crash retrieval
In early 1997 U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Jonathan Weygandt, on perimeter security during Operation Laser Strike in Peru, says he was sent to secure a downed aircraft and found instead a sculpted, egg-shaped object some ten metres tall embedded in a granite cliff, casting no shadow and coated in a fluctuating purplish-green sheen, before a Department of Energy team in hazmat gear removed the Marines from the site and he was interrogated and threatened.
Species catalogued
Stone says that when he left the service in 1989 the Army had catalogued 57 different species of non-human intelligent beings, some of them looking much like a human being and able to walk unnoticed among people. Jason Sands describes direct contact with a blue-tinged humanoid in a military BDU uniform with whom he says he communicated telepathically, and says he heard of a "council of twelve" in connection with the non-human presence.
Biological materials
Several witnesses describe the recovery of non-human biological materials alongside crashed craft. Grusch told the committee that biologics came with some of the recoveries, and that what he knows of the bodies comes from others. Sheehan says Grusch testified under oath that the United States holds both the craft and biologics that confirm their occupants are non-human. Ryan Wood's Majic Eyes Only, which Harris says compiles 92 separate retrieval events, includes accounts in which biological material was secured alongside hardware. Emery Smith says he worked inside classified underground facilities analysing and cataloguing recovered non-terrestrial biological specimens and craft components.
Chain of custody and contractor involvement
According to Richard Dolan, recovered craft and materials passed from the field teams through military transport to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as the primary initial reception site, and from there advanced components were distributed to private contractors — including Battelle Memorial Institute, Lockheed Skunk Works and Hughes Aircraft — under "foreign technology" cover designations. Sheehan says two craft are held at Wright-Patterson, one at a base in Missouri and one near Maryland, and that in the 1950s the Air Force could not at first work out how to open an intact craft. Colonel Philip Corso, who served in the Army Research and Development division, says he personally oversaw the seeding of recovered Roswell craft technology into the research programs of defense contractors, including fiber optics, integrated circuits, night vision and particle beam technology.
The podcast host Julian Dorey, relaying what he says insiders have told him, describes the past six or seven decades of U.S. government practice as having given private aerospace organizations "carte blanche", so that material recovered from a crash "isn't even owned by the government"; Sheehan answers that the 64-page bill he helped draft gives a review board eminent domain and subpoena power to dig that information out of those corporations, and that the House version removed it.
Security and classification
Grusch's sworn statement, as read to him in the hearing, was that the United States holds non-human spacecraft and that some of the artifacts have circulated with defense contractors. Grusch says the arrangement leans on the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, which the Schumer amendment "awkwardly calls out", treating the subject as nuclear secrets. Sheehan says the highest-level program non-disclosure agreements carry consent to lethal force, so that a signatory agrees he can be "gunned down on the street anywhere at any time."
The Wilson–Davis memo (2002) records Admiral Thomas Wilson being refused access to a classified special access program, the program manager telling him that it involved vehicles of non-human origin and that he had no need to know; Wilson was then Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. In his NewsNation interview Grusch said that "there are multiple legacy programs — and we have the craft. And we have non-human intelligence as well. The biologics are not human."
