Terminology for non-human intelligent beings
Terminology for non-human intelligent beings is the body of designations that UFO research, government and military documents, contactee traditions and languages other than English apply to intelligent beings of non-human or non-terrestrial origin: EBE (extraterrestrial biological entity) for the Roswell survivor in Milton William Cooper's writing, non-human intelligence in congressional and Pentagon usage since about 2023, ultraterrestrial in John Keel's writing, and alien, visitor and entity in research and contactee usage. Steven Greer holds that one of the biggest sources of confusion is the co-mingling, under one name, of the extraterrestrial, the man-made and what people call extradimensional or interdimensional phenomena.
Independent researchers, contactees and whistleblowers also apply incompatible names to the same beings, factions and phenomena, or one name to beings that are distinct, as Michael Salla and Elena Danaan describe. The confusion is not merely semantic: it produces genuine disagreement about the nature and identity of the beings involved, false identifications of separate species as one, and obscured operational distinctions between politically opposed factions whose members may be phenotypically identical. Some of it is attributed to the independent development of unconnected source traditions rather than to any single error,[citation needed] while Danaan holds that part of it is deliberately engineered disinformation run by a renegade faction, the Taal-Shiar.
Official and governmental terms
Extraterrestrial Biological Entity (EBE) Milton William Cooper writes that the live alien found wandering in the desert after the 1949 Roswell crash "was named EBE," a name "suggested by Dr. Vannevar Bush" and short for Extraterrestrial Biological Entity. The designation is also attributed to Majestic 12 documents of the post-Roswell period, and to Project Aquarius documentation, with subcategories distinguishing biological beings from manufactured or drone organisms, and "EBE" is read as framing the beings primarily as biological specimens rather than persons.[citation needed] An alleged 1989 Defense Intelligence Agency document reportedly uses the same designation in a context broadly consistent with its earlier usage.[citation needed] The Q94-109A document attributed to Dan Burisch pairs it with a program name: "Extraterrestrial Biological Entity (EBE) A.K. 'AQ-J-Rod' (JR)," and a Project Camelot copy of the Q94 document carries the same designation.
Non-Human Intelligence / Non-Human Intelligent Being (NHI / non-human intelligent being) The term adopted by the United States Congress and the Pentagon from approximately 2023 onward, appearing in the UAP Disclosure Act and related legislation and testimony, including that of David Grusch. "NHI" carries no assumption about origin (extraterrestrial, interdimensional, or otherwise),[citation needed] and is described as more neutral than "alien" or "EBE."[citation needed] David Grusch told the 2023 hearing that "non-human intelligence" and "non-human origin technical vehicles" are the terms he uses because they are the most accurate, the legislation is said to use the term 26 times, and the shift from "ET" to "NHI" in official discourse is read as growing recognition that the phenomenon includes beings whose origin cannot be reduced to interstellar travel. Steven Greer, by contrast, objects to "NHI" as a product of the "CIA psychological warfare Division that has the linguistics department," arguing that "flying saucers" was replaced by manufactured terms — "UFO, UAP" — designed to control the narrative. The term is also held to have entered the contact and disclosure literature in the 1990s–2000s to cover beings that are not extraterrestrial in origin, including intraterrestrial inner-Earth civilizations, interdimensional beings and future-human travellers, while avoiding the assumption that all such beings come from space.[citation needed]
Non-Terrestrial Officer (NTO) A heading that Gary McKinnon reports finding in US military computer systems during his hacking of NASA and Pentagon networks: "a list of officers' names" under "Non-Terrestrial Officers," in a spreadsheet he describes as listing names, ranks and ship names, with "fleet-to-fleet transfers." McKinnon says the phrase "doesn't mean little green men" and that he reads it as "not Earth-based," the ships as not US Navy ships, and the whole as evidence "they have some kind of spaceship, off-planet." Whether the heading refers to beings of non-terrestrial origin or to a classified human personnel category has not been publicly clarified.[citation needed]
Research and popular terms
Alien The dominant popular-media and lay term, carrying connotations of foreignness and otherness rooted in the word's ordinary meaning. Widely used in UFO literature and public discourse but avoided in more careful research contexts as prejudicial to questions of origin and nature.[citation needed] The word derives from Latin alienus (belonging to another) and entered UFO discourse primarily through mid-20th century science fiction and governmental euphemism.[citation needed] Elena Danaan noted that "alien races" remained the most broadly recognizable human term even while acknowledging its imprecision.
Extraterrestrial (ET) Common in scientific and semi-scientific discourse; implies origin outside Earth but does not imply biological personhood. Used in SETI research and by figures including Steven Greer and Michael Salla.[citation needed] Greer distinguishes genuine extraterrestrial craft from interdimensional beings and human-made black budget craft, and objects to the conflation of these categories under a single "alien" label.
Entity A clinical term for an individual being that does not itself assert personhood.[citation needed] Dan Burisch, who met the future human he calls Chi'el'ah at S-4, says "he's still a human being, and a human is a human is a human to me" and describes "a true friendship" with him.
Visitor / Contact Terms used in contactee and CE-5 communities to emphasize an invited or mutually initiated relationship rather than an intrusive or classified one. Steven Greer's CSETI prefers "contact" language;[citation needed] Elena Danaan and related channelling traditions use "brothers and sisters of the stars" and similar formulations. "Visitors" is Whitley Strieber's deliberate term, adopted because neither "alien," "demon" nor "angel" captured the nature of the beings he experienced, preserving ambiguity about origin and intention while acknowledging the experiential reality of the contact; "Star People" is the name used in many indigenous contact traditions across North America, Australia and Polynesia for sky beings who have maintained contact with humanity across millennia, conveying moral teachings and genetic gifts, which locates the beings within creation stories rather than an invasion paradigm, and "The Others" is used in some academic parapsychology.[citation needed] Some researchers and contactees hold visitor to be the most logically and diplomatically appropriate English term for a non-human intelligent being that comes to Earth: the term makes no assumption about origin, purpose, identity, or intent, while acknowledging the being as a conscious agent actively visiting — as opposed to an inanimate object arriving, such as a meteorite or an unoccupied (drone) craft, which would be a delivery rather than a visit — and in many cultural traditions the expected response to a visitor is hospitality.[citation needed] Proponents contrast the term with alien (which foregrounds foreignness), EBE (which depersonalises), and entity (which is deliberately non-committal on personhood); they include figures in the CE-5 and contactee communities who argue that the language of contact should not presuppose an adversarial or covert relationship.[citation needed] In popular culture, background alien characters in the animated series South Park are recurrently referred to as visitors rather than aliens.[citation needed]
Program-specific designations
J-Rod Dan Burisch's designation at S-4 for the future human descendants known as J-Rods, subdivided into P-45 and P-52 variants by temporal origin.[citation needed] Linda Moulton Howe's source BJ gives the name's origin as two symbols a being pointed to in 1953, one looking like a "J" and the other like a rod.
Orion Cube / Yellow Book beings Terms used by Majestic 12 and Burisch for beings whose communications or presence were mediated through devices such as the Yellow Cube.[citation needed]
Terminology in other languages
When Dmitry Medvedev spoke to a journalist after a televised interview in December 2012, with the crew's microphones still live, he said in the English subtitles that "along with the briefcase with nuclear codes, the president of the country is given a special 'top secret' folder" that "in its entirety contains information about aliens who visited our planet." The remark, later catalogued as the Medvedev statement on the extraterrestrial visitor file, is among the recorded statements that name the beings, and Medvedev pointed the reporter to the film Men in Black for more detail, an exchange The Moscow Times described as a joke.

Major terminological conflicts
| Term | Used by Source A to mean | Used by Source B to mean | Status of conflict |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Pleiadian" | Ahel from Erra in Taygeta — GFW-allied humanoids with blonde hair and distinctive slanted eyes (per Danaan)[32] | the Jadaii Anunakene (Janosians), an Anunnaki colony at Aldebaran that contacted Maria Orsic in 1919 (older German Vril literature calls Orsic's contacts Pleiadian or Aldebaran beings[citation needed]); also used as generic label for any Pleiadian-region being including Taal, Noor, Taal-Shiar, and Alcyone-based factions[33] | Danaan's A Gift from the Stars p. 286 identifies Orsic's contactors as the Jadaii Anunakene, an exiled colony from the destroyed planet Janos now at Aldebaran, and she says in interview that they are "allied with the reptilian collective,"[34] so the label "Pleiadian" designates beings on opposite sides of the galactic conflict[35] |
| "Grey" | Manufactured biological drones (Do-Hu, BREs) and enslaved Nebu worker races — not autonomous beings but instruments of the Alliance of the Six (per Danaan)[36] | Degenerated future humans / J-Rods traveling back from ~24,000–52,000 years in the future (per Burisch)[37] | Different beings conflated under one phenotypic label; the Danaan Greys are manufactured extraterrestrial drones while the Burisch Greys are degenerated temporal humans — ontologically incompatible categories sharing a superficial appearance |
| "Nordics" / "Tall Whites" | Ahel/Taal Pleiadian humanoids allied with the Galactic Federation of Worlds (per Danaan)[32] | Etherians from Andromeda (per Charles Hall's Nellis Air Force Base testimony);[citation needed] the Altairon of Altair, "humans with white hair and very skinny, very thin," also called tall whites (per Danaan);[38] the Kiily-Tokurt of Vela, tall grey-humanoid shapeshifters of reptiloid genetics whom "your people calls sometimes 'tall whites'" (per Danaan);[39] asked about Hall's Nellis contacts, Danaan names the Altairan humanoids or the Kiily-Tokurt as candidates[7][40] | Danaan warns that the name "is put on different species"[7] |
| "Reptilian" / "Draco" | Off-world Alpha Draconian Empire — an interstellar imperial power originating from Alpha Draconis (per Danaan and Salla)[41] | Earth-native reptilians per Lacerta testimony; any reptilian species regardless of origin (David Icke)[42] | Specific interstellar empire vs. catch-all for any reptilian species; the Encyclopedia Galactica documents multiple peaceful GFW-member Reptiloid species, noting the Draco reptilians are "an exception"[43] |
| "Orion Group" | Political alliance of service-to-self entities per the Law of One / Ra Material (political entity)[44] | Any species originating from the Orion constellation (geographic designation); Nebu hive collective headquartered in M42 (per Danaan)[45] | Political entity vs. geographic designation; the Council of Five (benevolent) also originates from the Orion zone, making "Orion" an unreliable moral indicator |
| "J-Rod" | Future human from ~52,000 years ahead — Chi'el'ah, of whom Burisch says "he's still a human being"[22][46] | Zeta Reticulan Grey / extraterrestrial biological entity (MJ-12 nomenclature; Howe's sources)[26] | Same individual classified as either a degenerated future human or an extraterrestrial Grey depending on the source tradition consulted |
| "Galactic Federation" | GFW: military federation of ~52 mostly humanoid worlds conducting liberation operations in the Solar System, per Danaan and Salla[47] | Galactic Federation of Light / Ashtar Command (New Age channeling traditions); also conflated with the Confederation of Planets (operates at higher densities, works with individuals rather than governments)[48] | Multiple organizations with similar names; Danaan explicitly warns that the Taal-Shiar run information operations to discredit the GFW by conflating it with channeled "Galactic Federation" messages[9] |
| "Eben" / "EBE" | The specific individual recovered from the 1947 Roswell crash and held by the US government (EBE-1)[49] | Reticulan Greys from Zeta Reticuli generally (per Project SERPO); also "Shamtbahali" in the Danaan own-name designation[50] | Individual vs. species designation; the same three letters designate a specific captive entity, a species, and a general government classification code |
| "Archons" | Draconian Reptilian factions operating from the Orion Group (Alex Collier)[51] | An artificial intelligence of pre-human origin managing reality parameters (Jason Reza Jorjani)[52]; also: tulpa-like thought-form entities sustained by collective fear (Swaruu/Cosmic Agency); also: Gnostic subordinate creator-entities (Nag Hammadi) | Same term designates physical Reptilians, non-physical AI, thought-form entities, and ancient Gnostic cosmological beings depending on the source |
| "Anunnaki" | A specific group from planet Nibiru in a parallel dimension, with their portal in the Orion zone (Danaan)[53] | Ancient "sky gods" who genetically engineered humanity (Zecharia Sitchin); interchangeable with Elohim (various traditions) | Specific interdimensional species vs. generic label for any ancient genetic engineers visiting Earth |
Causes of terminological confusion
Independent source traditions
The major source traditions developed independently without cross-referencing.[citation needed] Danaan's classification derives from alleged telepathic contact with a Federation officer (Thor Han Eredyon) and organizes beings by home star system; Burisch's classification derives from alleged classified government programs and organizes beings by temporal origin; the Law of One derives from channeling and organizes beings by density and service orientation; Collier's classification, tied to the Andromedan Council, derives from claimed physical contact and emphasizes political alignment; and Puthoff's classification organizes by geographic origin (extraterrestrial vs. ultraterrestrial vs. cryptoterrestrial).
Each tradition has its own nomenclature, and mapping between them is the difficulty Salla and Danaan describe. A being identified as "Pleiadian" in one tradition may correspond to a "Nordic" in another, a "Tall White" in a third, and an "Aldebaran Anunakene" in a fourth — or may not correspond at all, because the different traditions may be describing genuinely different entities under a similar label.
Channeling vs. physical contact
A structural difference in information source compounds the naming problem. Contactees who report physical meetings with beings — such as Charles Hall, Dan Burisch, Billy Meier, or Elena Danaan — produce descriptions anchored in observed physical characteristics and stated identifications. Channelers who receive information through psychic or telepathic transmission — such as Carla Rueckert (Law of One), Barbara Marciniak ("Pleiadians"), or the Cosmic Agency team — produce descriptions filtered through the channeler's existing conceptual vocabulary and cultural framework.
When the same species name appears in both physical-contact and channeled accounts, there is no reliable mechanism for determining whether both refer to the same beings. The Taal-Shiar — a renegade Taal faction allied with the Nebu — are explicitly identified according to Elena Danaan as running disinformation operations through channeled communications, deliberately introducing false identifications to discredit the Galactic Federation of Worlds. This means that some terminological confusion may be engineered rather than accidental.
Different axes of classification
Researchers classify the same beings along different axes — appearance, origin, political alignment and temporal origin — which produces systematic mismatches between traditions; the axes themselves are set out in Classification of extraterrestrial, interdimensional, and non-human intelligent beings, and the naming conventions that follow from each are described under naming convention approaches below.
Species identification disputes
The Pleiadian problem
Danaan and Salla treat "Pleiadian" as a label that covers beings on opposite sides of the galactic conflict. Elena Danaan and Michael Salla identify the beings who contacted Maria Orsic as the Jadaii Anunakene, an Anunnaki colony at Aldebaran that Danaan says is allied with the reptilian collective, not Pleiadian at all. Older literature calls them "Pleiadians" or "Aldebaranians."[citation needed] The Taal-Shiar of Alcyone are a renegade Pleiadian faction allied with the Nebu, making "Pleiadian" not merely imprecise but actively misleading as a moral indicator — the Pleiades contain both the GFW-allied Ahel of Erra and the Nebu-allied Taal-Shiar of Alcyone.
The J-Rod paradox
The J-Rod is classified as either a degenerated future human (Dan Burisch) or an extraterrestrial Grey (mainstream ufology / Majestic 12 operational nomenclature), depending on the source consulted. Burisch described Chi'el'ah as categorically human — "he's still a human being" — while the program that held him designated him "EBE" (Extraterrestrial Biological Entity) and "AQ-J-Rod." The Q-94 document itself uses clinical language ("Extraterrestrial Biological Entity A.K. 'AQ-J-Rod'") that explicitly frames the being as non-human, while Burisch's personal testimony insists on his humanity.
The Grey spectrum
Elena Danaan and Dan Burisch between them apply the label "Grey" to five kinds of being:
- Manufactured drones (Do-Hu, BREs, PLFs) — no autonomous consciousness
- Nebu hive members (Eban, Grail, Indugutk) — autonomous species operating under a Queen-linked hive mind
- Enslaved worker races (Reticulans, Solipsi Rai) — capable of independent thought if the hive link is severed
- Degenerated future humans (J-Rods) — temporal, not spatial, origin
- Benevolent Greys (Emerther of Tau Ceti) — the sole documented exception to the Earth-contact Grey pattern
Danaan holds that "it is not possible to repertoriate into precise categories all the Greys, Reptiloids, Amphibians, Humanoids, Insectoids and all the Hybrid sub-species," among the wider human-looking and non-human-looking extraterrestrial types she catalogues.
The "Galactic Federation" tangle
At least three distinct organizations share near-identical names:
- Galactic Federation of Worlds (GFW) — military federation of ~52 worlds, conducting fleet operations, working with governments and militaries
- Galactic Federation of Light (GFOL) — channeled entity associated with New Age traditions and the Ashtar Command
- Confederation of Planets — higher-density organization (5th–8th density) working with individuals rather than governments, distinct from the GFW in both operational level and method
The conflation of these three is actively exploited: Danaan identifies the Taal-Shiar as running disinformation campaigns that attribute GFW actions to "the Galactic Federation" in New Age channels, deliberately muddying the distinction to discredit the genuine military alliance. Michael Salla, summarising Michael Wolf, names three major groups of which the Majestic 12 organization was aware — "the joint humanoid-corporate alliance, the mostly humanoid Federation of Worlds, or F-O-W, the mostly reptiloid Unified Races of Orion" — and says the Federation of Worlds corresponds with the Galactic Federation of Worlds on which "Dr. Brown and his remote viewing team were focusing."
Naming convention approaches
Star-system-based naming (Danaan)
Elena Danaan's framework, codified in A Gift from the Stars (2020) and the Encyclopedia Galactica (2024), names species by their home star system and their own-language self-designation: Ahel (from Erra, Taygeta), Eban (from Betelgeuse), Draco reptilians (from Alpha Draconis). This system is precise — each name designates exactly one species from one star system — but requires learning an extensive alien nomenclature that has no English-language cognates, and the names it produces do not map onto the popular phenotypic labels. The GFW's administrative language, Taami, provides the phonetic basis for most of these designations.
Witness-based naming
Government programs and ufological tradition name species by the circumstances of first encounter or by the witness who documented them: "EBE" for the Roswell entity, "J-Rod" for the symbol-mediated identification at S-4, "Tall Whites" for Charles Hall's Nellis AFB contacts. This approach is intuitive but produces labels that reveal nothing about origin, biology, or allegiance — and, critically, the same label may be applied by different witnesses to different species based on superficial resemblance.
Appearance-based naming
Popular ufology's dominant system — "Greys," "Nordics," "Reptilians," "Mantids" — classifies by gross phenotype. This is the system most accessible to the general public and most widely used in media, but it systematically conflates ontologically distinct species that happen to share a body plan. The Encyclopedia Galactica explicitly warns against this approach for Reptiloids, noting that "Reptiloid cultures include a wide range of diverse natures of consciousness" and that conflating all Reptiloids with the Alpha Draconian Empire misrepresents the majority of Reptiloid civilizations. Danaan holds that this phenotypic grouping puts distinct species under single labels, as with "tall whites."
Density and alignment naming (Law of One)
The Ra Material classifies beings by density level and service orientation rather than species name. Ra refers to the "Orion group" (service-to-self alliance) and the "Confederation" (service-to-others alliance) without providing species-specific names, making the system resistant to the misidentification problem but difficult to cross-reference with physical-contact accounts that describe specific individuals and species. The framework refers to most advanced non-human intelligent beings as "people" in a deliberately non-othering sense, and groups them into the Confederation of Planets in the Service of the One Infinite Creator (positive polarity) versus the Orion group (negative polarity), emphasizing consciousness orientation rather than species morphology; because service orientation is orthogonal to both appearance and origin, a "Grey" could be service-to-others or service-to-self depending on its faction, while the popular label carries a strong service-to-self connotation.[citation needed]
Temporal-origin naming (Burisch)
Dan Burisch names future-human lineages by temporal origin — "P-24K," "P-45K," "P-52K" — a designation invisible to appearance-based observers: a P-52K J-Rod and a Nebu Eban Grey may look similar but are categorized as fundamentally different kinds of entity.
Government classification codes
US government programs have employed alphanumeric codes — "EBE-1," "AQ-J-Rod," "COSMIC-MAJIC" clearance levels — that precisely designate specific individuals or programs but carry no biological or origin information and cannot be decoded without access to the classified key. USAF Major Tom Mack called the same entity "JAROD" and the "Puppet Master," adding yet another layer of program-specific nomenclature to an already overburdened designation.
Consequences for research
Cross-referencing between source traditions is uncertain. When Bill Uhouse describes working with a "J-Rod" at the Nevada Test Site and Dan Burisch describes working with a "J-Rod" at S-4, it is not certain they are describing the same individual, the same species, or even the same ontological category of being — despite using the same label. When Corey Goode describes Blue Avians and Elena Danaan describes Carians, the possible relationships range from "same beings under different names" to "completely unrelated species with superficial resemblance" — and no method is offered for resolving the question across the broader roster of catalogued beings.
The classification of non-human intelligent beings by origin organises the beings along several axes at once; the primary evidence it works from is individual testimony from sources who did not coordinate their naming, and Danaan holds that some identifications were supplied deliberately by the Taal-Shiar to mislead.
