Al Bielek
Alfred Bielek (March 30, 1927 – October 10, 2011), born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American electronics engineer and self-described secret space program whistleblower who in the late 1980s began publicly claiming that he had originally been USS Eldridge crew member Edward Cameron — a sailor allegedly involved in the 1943 Philadelphia Experiment — and that his identity had been erased and replaced through time travel procedures conducted within the Montauk Project.[citation needed] Bielek's account, presented across radio appearances, conferences, and Internet videos from 1989 onward, is described by mainstream sources as an unsupported elaboration of an already-disputed urban legend,[citation needed] while in exopolitics and Montauk Project research it is treated as a primary witness account corroborated in part by fellow alleged participant Stewart Swerdlow.
Background
Bielek's verifiable biography records him as an electronics engineer who worked in defense-adjacent industries during the postwar period before his retirement; he spent his later years in Florida, where he died in October 2011. Public claims of his alleged former identity as Edward Cameron began in 1989, when he attended a screening of the 1984 Stewart Raffill film The Philadelphia Experiment and reportedly experienced a recovered-memory episode in which he came to believe he had been aboard the Eldridge.[citation needed]
Identity claim
Bielek identified himself as Edward Cameron, an officer aboard the USS Eldridge during the Philadelphia Experiment — an alleged 1943 U.S. Navy test of invisibility/radar-evasion technology that, in proponents' accounts, caused the ship and crew to phase out of normal spacetime. According to his account, he and his brother Duncan Cameron (later identified with Duncan Cameron of the Montauk Project) were pulled from the Eldridge and sent forward in time to the Montauk facility in 1983, where their identities were subsequently altered; he reportedly re-entered time as Al Bielek. He claimed direct involvement in the Montauk Project from 1971 to 1983, and additionally claimed to have been personally sent to two further future periods, having witnessed human civilization in 2137 and 2800 AD.
At the 1990 MUFON Conference, Bielek asserted that Raffill's 1984 film "was largely consistent with the events he claimed to have witnessed in 1943," and he proceeded to elaborate the account through subsequent radio talk shows, conferences, and online videos.[citation needed]
Philadelphia–Montauk time loop
Stewart Swerdlow, who has likewise self-identified as a Montauk Project participant from 1970 to 1983, has corroborated Bielek's core claims about the alleged Philadelphia–Montauk time loop. According to Swerdlow, Bielek and Duncan Cameron arrived at Montauk in 1983 after jumping from the Eldridge in 1943, were interrogated, and were subsequently sent back to 1943 — with Duncan becoming the lead psychic on the Montauk Chair from 1970 onward. Swerdlow characterizes the connection between the two programs as permanent: "It's considered to be a roadway or a vortex between two points in time and space."
Temporal war framework
Michael Salla presented Bielek's testimony in a June 2022 episode of EXOPOLITICS TODAY as part of a broader interpretive framework in which World War II was allegedly not merely a conventional conflict but a temporal war involving multiple non-human factions — with Draco Reptilians purportedly assisting Nazi Germany and future humanity allegedly supplying the Allies via time-travel technology.
Reception and skeptical analysis
Bielek's claims are widely regarded by mainstream and skeptical sources as a hoax or confabulation elaborated from the older Carl M. Allen / "Carlos Allende" hoax that originated the Philadelphia Experiment narrative in 1955–56. Historian Mike Dash has noted that authors who popularized the Philadelphia Experiment story after Morris K. Jessup tended to perform little independent research, and that Bielek's late-1980s addition of Montauk Project, time travel, and identity-replacement elements appeared only after the 1984 Raffill film provided the dramatic outline.[citation needed] The U.S. Navy and the Office of Naval Research have repeatedly stated that no invisibility experiment occurred aboard Eldridge; ONR pointed out in September 1996 that "ONR has never conducted investigations on radar invisibility, either in 1943 or at any other time," noting also that ONR was not established until 1946.[citation needed] A USS Eldridge veterans' reunion told a Philadelphia newspaper in April 1999 that their ship had never made Philadelphia port,[citation needed] and the ship's complete World War II action report — including 1943 deck-log remarks — is publicly available on microfilm.[citation needed]
Jacques Vallée has proposed that the underlying real-world events were degaussing procedures conducted aboard the nearby USS Engstrom, which used powerful electromagnetic fields to render ships less detectable to magnetic mines — a routine wartime procedure unconnected to invisibility or time travel.[citation needed] Robert A. Goerman, writing in Fate magazine in 1980, identified Carl Meredith Allen of New Kensington, Pennsylvania — who suffered an established psychiatric illness — as the author of the original "Carlos Allende" letters that Bielek's account elaborates.[citation needed]
Bibliography and recordings
Bielek's claims have been disseminated primarily through interviews, lecture videos, and conference appearances rather than through peer-reviewed scholarship. Among the most cited are his MUFON 1990 lecture on the Philadelphia Experiment, his 1991 video The Philadelphia Experiment and Other UFO Conspiracies, and his joint appearances with Stewart Swerdlow and Duncan Cameron at Montauk Project–themed conferences.[citation needed]
