Vatican UFO knowledge

Vatican UFO knowledge refers to claims that the Vatican (Holy See) possesses archived records of NHI contact predating the modern UFO era, that its restricted library contains suppressed scriptures documenting alien interaction with early humanity, and that senior officials within the Catholic Church have privately acknowledged extraterrestrial reality while preparing theological frameworks for public disclosure. The subject is covered in detail in the Vatican article, which addresses the Vatican's archives and NHI knowledge, its disclosure-preparation statements, its role in ratlines, and its financial connections.

Archive access attempts

Danny Sheehan, constitutional attorney and former special counsel for the Carter administration's congressional investigation into UFO documents, testified to attempting to access the Vatican's UFO-related archives through Jesuit headquarters in Washington D.C. Marshall Smith of the Congressional Research Service tasked Sheehan with contacting the Vatican to see whether Jesuit scholars could access relevant material: "I've been asked by Marshall Smith to contact the Vatican to see if we could get access to the archives — anything they had in the archives about the UFO phenomenon or the extraterrestrial civilization that was assumed to be responsible for the UFO."

Fatima and intelligence scrutiny

William Cooper reported that U.S. intelligence used Vatican assets recruited during World War II to obtain the Vatican's internal study of the Fatima events — which the intelligence community had scrutinized "on suspicion that it was alien manipulation." Cooper stated that NHI beings, when confronted by the government with the Fatima prophecy's contents, confirmed it was accurate and attributed the Fatima events to their own program of managing human civilization through religious programming: "The aliens explained that they had created us through hybridization and had manipulated the human race through religion, Satanism, witchcraft, magic and the occult."

Suppression of apocryphal contact accounts

Multiple researchers including Michael Salla and William Bramley argue that the Vatican's restricted archives contain records of historical NHI contact that have been suppressed because they contradict the theological framework of unique human divine creation. The Book of Enoch — describing the Watchers as non-human beings who descended and interacted with humans — was excluded from the biblical canon by the Council of Laodicea (363 CE) and the Canonical Decrees of Pope Gelasius (495 CE). Gregg Braden, on The Joe Rogan Experience #2387, noted that the Book of Enoch "was accepted before these councils" as canonical — among texts containing direct-experience accounts of divine contact that the councils removed: "Just like Enoch. The Book of Enoch was accepted before these councils as well. So these are inner teachings not meant for the masses."

Historic contact accounts and Catholic archives

Diana Pasulka, professor of religious studies and author of American Cosmic, has identified the documented experience of Francis of Assisi on Mount Alverna (c. 1224 CE) as a historic UFO contact account allegedly altered by Catholic translators. Pasulka's translations of Thomas of Celano's original Latin describe "a sound and fury, atmospheric sparks, and a flaming torch" with telepathic communication and radiation-like wounds on Francis — paralleling modern contactee accounts of radiation injury: "Could this be the same radiation damage that occurs in what we can now call UFO experiences? The people getting like burns, so that's ultraviolet, that's like ionizing radiation."

Pasulka, professor of religious studies at UNC Wilmington and author of American Cosmic (2019) and Encounters (2023), reportedly conducted research at the Vatican Observatory and restricted archive in the company of a pseudonymous NASA-connected scientist she calls "Tyler." She was invited by Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ — MIT-trained Jesuit astronomer and director of the Vatican Observatory — who told her: "Everything that has to do with space at the Vatican comes to our archive. You're welcome to come and stay. We have a scholar's residence." Tyler's credentials allegedly granted him access to restricted archive sections through unexplained channels: presenting identification to a guard who had Tyler's face already on a security database screen, Tyler was admitted without challenge. At the Observatory, Tyler reportedly encountered International Space Agency astrophysicists who recognized him by reputation. Pasulka expected the visit to settle the question for him, the Observatory being staffed by the same kind of people as the space program and devoutly Catholic besides, and describes him turning religious afterwards.

Senior Vatican theologians on NHI

Steven Greer has described meeting personally with Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a senior theologian and demonologist to Pope John Paul II, at the Vatican. Greer reported that Balducci drew a clear distinction between extraterrestrial beings and supernatural entities, stating "neither angels nor demons need flying saucers," and affirmed that God would not have left all hope for intelligent life in the universe solely in humans. In a separate interview, Greer expanded on Balducci's significance, recounting that Balducci — whom he described as "the top demonology at the Vatican" — explicitly rejected the conflation of UFOs with demonic phenomena, a position Greer characterized as authoritative given Balducci's formal role within the Church hierarchy.

Disclosure preparation

The Vatican's November 10, 2007 statement — acknowledging the growing likelihood of discovering extraterrestrial life in light of exoplanet discoveries — is interpreted by disclosure advocates as theological preparation for public acknowledgment of NHI contact. Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno (2010) stated: "I'd be delighted [if we found aliens] and I think we would all suddenly realize that God is a much bigger god than we imagined." Vatican Observatory director José Gabriel Funes (2008): "Just as there is a multitude of creatures on Earth, there could be other beings, even intelligent, created by God." Pope Francis — the first Jesuit pope in history — is seen as a potential vehicle for significant theological updating, given the Jesuit Order's role as the Vatican's primary intelligence and scholarship arm, directly answerable to the Pope rather than through the episcopal hierarchy.
