The Kyllimir-Auk are a non-human tall Saurian race from the Kylat system — a four-planet system around Gamma Volans — closely allied with the Maytre. Colloquially called "bird-heads" because of their distinctive facial features, the Galactic Federation of Worlds forbade them from visiting Earth 3,000 years ago, but they continued coming due to their alliance with the Maytre.
Conflict with the Galactic Federation of Worlds
The Kyllimir-Auk's ongoing presence on Earth, maintained through Maytre protection, is described as an unresolved and ongoing problem for the Galactic Federation of Worlds. Their oblong silvery ships are extremely fast; they employ interdimensional travel and have a habit of materialising in a two-dimensional state to escape monitoring — a technique described as "very annoying." The Gamma Volans system (their Kylat home system) is located in the Volans constellation of the Southern celestial hemisphere.
Physical characteristics
As Saurian-Grey hybrids, the Kyllimir-Auk combine the tall stature and saurian skeletal structure of the Draco reptilians branch with the enlarged cranium and grey skin tone associated with the Grey lineage. Their most distinctive feature — giving rise to the "bird-heads" colloquial designation — is a facial structure that diverges from typical saurian profiles toward an avian morphology, though the specific nature of this feature (beak-like nose, crest, or overall skull shape) is not detailed beyond the colloquial name in Danaan's source material.
Volans constellation
The Kylat system's host star Gamma Volans lies in the Volans constellation of the southern celestial hemisphere, at approximately 142 light-years from Earth. The constellation Volans (the Flying Fish) is a small southern constellation bordered by Carina, Pictor, Dorado, Mensa, and Chamaeleon — and is one of the constellations containing documented NHI home systems in Danaan's taxonomy, alongside the neighboring Ummit civilization's entry on the facing page of A Gift from the Stars.
Alliance with the Maytre
The Kyllimir-Auk's sustained defiance of the Galactic Federation of Worlds' ban is made possible entirely through their alliance with the Maytre — a species themselves notorious for unauthorized Earth interactions and for resisting GFW jurisdiction. Without the Maytre's protection and possibly their technological or logistical assistance, the Kyllimir-Auk could not sustain their Earth presence in the face of GFW monitoring operations. The relationship is described from the GFW perspective as an ongoing problem without resolution — a de facto standoff in which the alliance between two non-compliant species effectively neutralizes GFW enforcement capacity against either individually.
