Planetary spirit

A planetary spirit is, in the Theosophical teaching of Helena Blavatsky, the ruler of a planet, "a kind of finite or personal god" counted among the Dhyan-Chohans, a name she gave as the generic term for all devas, or celestial beings. In The Secret Doctrine (1888) the planetary spirits are "the informing spirits of the Stars in general, and of the Planets especially", who rule the destinies of the human beings born under their constellations, and in her recorded answers to students she called them karmic agencies with no concern for the three higher principles of the human constitution. The clairvoyant Geoffrey Hodson later described an Archangel of the planet, for whom the Earth and its superphysical planes are a vehicle. Michael Salla's 2026 briefing for public officials lists "planetary spirits" and "solar beings" among the names that different religions give the Level Seven beings, beside gods, angels, Elohim, devas, demons and asuras. The planetary spirit is thus a ruling rank among the devas and, in Hodson's rendering, the Archangels, one of the interdimensional non-human intelligent beings of that top level; its counterpart in later Theosophy, the Planetary Logos, is a separate doctrine.

Blavatsky's planetary spirits

Blavatsky's recorded answers to students in London in 1888 distinguish the classes by function. "Dhyan-Chohan is a generic term for all Devas, or celestial beings", while a planetary spirit rules a planet; there is "only a functional difference between the Dhyanis and the Planetary". She held the terrestrial Builders to be planetary spirits "of a lower order" than those of the seven sacred planets, and said of them that "they were collectively that Spirit themselves". The Theosophical Glossary entry reproduced by Theosophy World gives the highest planetary spirit ruling any globe as "in reality the 'Personal God' of that planet", and the same encyclopedia entry sets the planetary spirits, "concerned with material evolution", apart from the Dhyani-Buddhas, who "are concerned with the spirit". Asked whether the Dhyani-Buddhas and the planetary spirits in charge of the globes go into pralaya with their planets, Blavatsky answered "only at the end of the seventh Round, and not between each round".

Hodson's planetary Archangels

Hodson, who describes clairvoyance as the instrument of some thirty years of research into the Kingdom of the Gods, writes of "the Archangels or Spiritual Regents of the planets", each of which "maintains an Ambassador and an 'Embassy' on Earth". He holds that the astrological influences of the heavenly bodies "emanate in large measure from these ensouling Intelligences", and that the Archangel of a planet "may be regarded as a synthesis of all other Archangels, angels and nature spirits within the planetary field".

Solar beings

Hodson gives the star-level counterpart: "the totality of the Angelic Hosts and nature spirits of a Solar System is a manifestation of one Solar Archangel of unimaginable splendour". The contactee George Kavassilas uses a different phrase for a similar presiding intelligence. In interviews with Salla he asks "who is Mother Earth? Who is the Solar Being?", places both inside a galactic and a cosmic intelligence, and says it "has not been shared who this planetary being is" or who the solar being is, the latter "an expression of the masculine expression of the universal intelligence". He says that entering the solar system is "entering into the body of the solar intelligence", and that Solar Warden admirals are "tuning the solar system" in "conscious co-creation with the solar being".
