Temple of Set
The Temple of Set is an occult initiatory order founded in 1975 by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Aquino, a U.S. Army officer specializing in psychological operations, following a split from Anton LaVey's Church of Satan. The organization is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian deity Set, whom Aquino identifies as the "Prince of Darkness" — a self-created god who stands apart from the natural order and grants individual consciousness its isolate, immortal character. The Temple's combination of high-ranking U.S. military membership, PSYOPS expertise, and occult doctrine has made it a recurring subject of investigation by researchers into mind control, Satanism in the military, and the alleged Luciferian agenda of transnational power structures.
Origins and founding
Anton LaVey established the Church of Satan in San Francisco in 1966, popularizing a form of materialist Satanism that treated Satan as a symbol of human self-interest rather than a literal deity. By 1975, internal tensions — partly theological, partly organizational — led to a schism.
Michael Aquino, who held the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserve at the time of founding, claimed to have received a direct communication from Set — later formalized as "The Book of Coming Forth by Night" — which provided the theological basis for the new organization's "Setianism." Setianism diverges from LaVeyan Satanism in asserting that Set is a real, literal entity: the original Prince of Darkness who granted humans the "Gift of Set," an isolate, self-aware intelligence distinct from the mechanistic natural universe.
Organizational structure
The Temple of Set is governed by Aquino through a Council of Nine, described in intelligence documentation as "in fact his chief lieutenants." Below the Council, members progress through initiatory degrees corresponding to increasing levels of Setian gnosis. The organization is described as small but nationwide in scope, with several hundred members as of the early 1980s, operating on a national level.
Military connections
The Temple of Set's relationship to the U.S. military is documented in declassified intelligence memoranda and Army Criminal Investigation Command records. Michael Aquino himself held a commission as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, with a military specialty in Military Intelligence and psychological operations.
Two of Aquino's senior lieutenants in the Temple were also U.S. Army Reserve officers in intelligence roles: Captain Willie Browning and an officer named Dennis Mann, both associated with Military Intelligence units in the Los Angeles area.
Intelligence analysis noted that the Temple of Set was marked by "its seeming obsession with the military" and an overt fascination with Nazi Germany — "many of them wearing on occasion, World War II German uniforms and insignia."
Aquino publicly claimed to his membership that he reported directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff — a claim intelligence assessors described as "a gross exaggeration" while nonetheless confirming his active commission and intelligence specialty.
MindWar and psychological operations
In 1980, Aquino co-authored with Colonel Paul E. Vallely a classified military paper titled "From PSYOP to MindWar: The Psychology of Victory," submitted to military review through the 7th Psychological Operations Group. The document proposed replacing conventional PSYOP with a doctrine of "MindWar" — defined as "the deliberate, aggressive, convincing of all participants in a war that we will win that war."
The MindWar paper called for targeting enemy and domestic populations through electronic media — television, radio, and emerging satellite communications — to reshape their will before conventional military engagement occurred. It explicitly invoked the use of "psychotronics," electromagnetic activity including ELF (extremely low frequency) waves, as tools for influencing the mental state of target populations.
The paper argued that existing PSYOP doctrine was too reactive: "MindWar must reach out to friends, enemies, and neutrals alike across the globe — neither through the primitive 'battlefistful' leaflets and loudspeakers of PSYOP nor through the weak, imprecise, and narrow efforts of psychotechnologies — but through the media possessed by the United States."
Researchers including Jim Marrs, Walter Bowart, and others cite the MindWar paper as evidence of a program to weaponize media and electromagnetic frequencies against civilian populations — a conclusion that intersects with broader research into Project MKUltra and its successor programs.
Presidio daycare scandal (1987)
In 1987, Michael Aquino was investigated in connection with allegations of child sexual abuse at the Presidio Child Development Center, a U.S. Army-run daycare facility at the Presidio of San Francisco. Multiple children reported abuse, with some identifying Aquino and his wife Lilith by name. Aquino held a Top Secret/SCI security clearance at the time of the investigation.
The investigation was eventually closed without charges, with the Army citing lack of prosecutable evidence. Critics and researchers — including investigative journalists and victims' advocates — alleged that Aquino's security clearances and military connections shielded him from prosecution. The Presidio case became a central reference point in studies of ritual abuse, satanic ritual abuse, and the intersection of occult practice with military intelligence.
The pre-existing 1981 Army intelligence memo — filed six years before the Presidio allegations — noted that Aquino was "known to frequent prostitutes in San Francisco in order to become involved in sadistic sexual practices" and that there were concerns about "his position in the Army reserve."
Setianism and esoteric doctrine
The Temple of Set's theological framework, Setianism, holds that Set is the only self-created god in the Egyptian pantheon — the "Black Flame" whose gift to humanity is the capacity for individual, isolate consciousness. Unlike the natural universe, which Setians view as a mechanistic system, the "Prince of Darkness" stands outside nature and enables the initiate to do likewise through a process called Xeper (Egyptian: "I have come into being"). Aquino's book MindWar states that Set "is the oldest of all gods" and represents the unique principle of individual consciousness, isolated and aware of itself as distinct from the universe. Interdimensional-hypothesis researchers describe the Temple as a human organizational interface with the Set current, an interdimensional entity that Aquino posits as a pre-cosmic intelligence whose gift to humanity was individual isolate self-consciousness, the faculty that separates the human mind from undifferentiated group-soul consciousness.[citation needed]
The Temple operates through initiatory degrees analogous to those of Freemasonry and other mystery schools, with the highest degree — the Ipsissimus — reserved for those who have achieved full self-deification in the Setian sense. The esoteric framework draws on Hermetic magic, Enochian systems, and Egyptian ceremonial practice, adapted to the Setian metaphysical worldview.
Researchers' assessments
The Temple of Set occupies a significant position in alternative research connecting military intelligence infrastructure to occult practice. Researchers including Alex Jones, David Icke, and Cathy O'Brien cite the organization — and Aquino personally — as an operational node in a broader network connecting CIA mind control research, military Satanism, and what they characterize as a Luciferian agenda operating within the highest levels of Western power structures.
Nathan Reynolds, a self-described Illuminati bloodline survivor, testified in 2022 that the occult organizations operating within military structures are interlocking — that Freemasonry, the Church of Satan, and the Temple of Set function as initiatory layers within a single hierarchical structure oriented toward what he described as "the Kingdom of Darkness." Former Church of Satan Warlock and later Temple of Set-adjacent initiate Bill Schnoebelen described reading the works of Michael Aquino as the pivotal step that led him from LaVey's organization into the deeper initiatory networks: "I read some of the works of Michael Aquino, who founded the Temple of Set. I also got involved with the Order of the Black Ram."
FBI assessment
Former FBI senior special agent-in-charge Ted Gunderson, who investigated satanic ritual abuse cases in the 1980s and 1990s, specifically named Michael Aquino alongside Anton LaVey as the two most prominent figures in the network of Satanic leadership operating within America, and documented that after the Presidio allegations Aquino was transferred to manage the U.S. Army Reserve's personnel files in St. Louis — a position Gunderson identified as providing continued access to sensitive military personnel records while enabling Aquino to continue his occult activities. Gunderson further stated that approximately a year before his testimony, Aquino had been actively involved in a classified mind-control programme at the University of Arizona on behalf of the U.S. government.
