Mainstream science community
The mainstream science community's relationship with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), extraterrestrial intelligence, and paranormal claims has been characterized by institutional avoidance, professional stigma, and a growing tension between private interest and public silence. Since the closure of Project Blue Book in 1969, the institutional position of mainstream science has been that UAP do not merit systematic study — a position that began to shift in the late 2010s with the public emergence of AATIP data and the entry of credentialed scientists into the field.
The stigma
The professional cost of engaging with UAP or extraterrestrial claims has been a defining feature of the field. David Grusch described the problem from the perspective of classified programs: even when the government possesses anomalous materials that require analysis by the world's best theoretical physicists, the compartmentalized security structure prevents recruiting the most qualified scientists — some of whom cannot obtain clearances due to lifestyle factors — and the subject's stigma deters those who could qualify.
Garry Nolan, a Stanford University professor of pathology and immunology with over 300 peer-reviewed publications, has described the stigma as circular: scientists refuse to study the subject because it is considered unserious, and it remains unserious because no scientists study it. Nolan entered the UAP field after being approached by the CIA and aerospace officials to analyze biological samples from individuals who had reported proximity to anomalous craft, and subsequently applied advanced mass spectrometry techniques to analyze anomalous materials with unusual isotopic signatures.
Private interest, public silence
Multiple sources describe a pattern in which credentialed scientists express private interest in UAP evidence while declining to engage publicly. Grusch stated that the quality and seniority of the individuals who confirmed classified UAP program information to him would "blow your mind" if they went public — implying that senior scientists are aware of the evidence but constrained by career risk and security obligations from saying so.
Steven Greer has described briefing senior scientists and government officials who reportedly affirmed the reality of the evidence in private settings but would not do so publicly.
Recent shift
Beginning around 2017, the public posture of mainstream science toward UAP began to shift, driven by several developments:
- Avi Loeb — the chair of Harvard University's astronomy department launched the Galileo Project (also known as the Harvard Galileo Project) in 2021, deploying standardized sensor networks to detect and characterize anomalous aerial phenomena using peer-reviewed scientific protocols. Loeb has argued that the scientific community's refusal to investigate constitutes a dereliction of scientific duty.
- Garry Nolan — brought institutional credibility to material analysis of UAP-related samples and has spoken publicly about the evidence at scientific conferences and on major podcasts
- Congressional hearings — the 2023 House Oversight Committee hearing placed UAP testimony in a formal scientific-adjacent institutional setting, lending procedural legitimacy to questions previously confined to fringe media
- Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU) — an organization of scientists, engineers, and academics that conducts technical analysis of UAP cases using scientific methodology
Ongoing resistance
Despite the shift, institutional resistance remains substantial. The National Academy of Sciences has not convened a study panel on UAP. Major scientific journals have published almost no original research on the phenomenon. University departments do not offer courses or fund research positions in UAP studies. The prevailing institutional position remains that the subject is either explained by conventional phenomena or too poorly evidenced to warrant formal study — a position that figures like Luis Elizondo have characterized as a product of deliberate information suppression rather than genuine scientific assessment.
