Rods from God

Rods from God is the informal name for a proposed kinetic bombardment weapons system in which heavy dense metal rods — typically described as tungsten cylinders approximately 6 meters in length and 30 cm in diameter, or larger — are deployed from orbital platforms and allowed to fall under gravity, striking targets with kinetic energy equivalent to a small nuclear weapon but without nuclear fallout or the political costs of nuclear use. The concept was first publicly associated with aerospace engineer Jerry Pournelle, who proposed it in the 1950s under the name "Project Thor." In the exopolitics research community, rods from God are discussed as one component of an orbital weapons infrastructure alleged to exist within the classified secret space program — alongside directed energy platforms, scalar wave arrays, and surveillance networks.

History and concept

The Rods from God concept exploits the substantial kinetic energy accumulated by any object falling from orbit. A tungsten rod released from low Earth orbit and guided by fins and GPS to its target would impact at approximately Mach 10 (3 km/s), with terminal energy release estimated at 11.5 tons of TNT equivalent per rod for standard specifications. Because the penetrator is kinetic rather than notable, it can destroy deeply buried hardened targets — underground command facilities, deep underground military bases (DUMBs), missile silos, and hardened bunkers — that resist conventional air-launched munitions.

Unlike nuclear weapons, kinetic bombardment systems would not be constrained by the Outer Space Treaty (1967), which prohibits placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not explicitly prohibit non-nuclear kinetic platforms — though their near-WMD energy yields have created legal debate about their treaty status.

Deep underground base destruction

In secret space program and exopolitics research contexts, kinetic orbital bombardment systems are discussed primarily in the context of destroying deep underground military bases (DUMBs) — the alleged subterranean facilities housing classified reverse engineering programs, dark fleet operations, and extraterrestrial treaty partners. Dr. Steven Greer described a scenario where a "non-kinetic solution" to the classified program's control over reverse-engineered technologies would be preferable to any military confrontation, but noted that military options would need to account for the ability "to get as much good detailed information on methods, assets, where they're located, where the bases are, where the entries are, what technologies that can be deployed as a countermeasure."

SSP context: orbital bombardment platforms

Corey Goode and other secret space program whistleblowers describe the classified orbital infrastructure as including multiple categories of space-based weapons platforms, among which kinetic bombardment systems are the least exotic — relying on known physics rather than classified alleged energy weapons or scalar technologies. The Space Force and its predecessor, Air Force Space Command, are the official custodians of orbital weapons and surveillance capabilities, though the full scope of classified space-based weapons remains unacknowledged.

Christopher Mellon, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, has described the range of U.S. space sensor capabilities as "amazing" and significantly underutilized for anomalous aerial phenomena research — implying a classified layer of orbital capability beyond what is publicly disclosed: "There's the DoD space fence. There's amazing capabilities out there. We're not even mining that data."

Contrast with electromagnetic interdiction

Greer drew an explicit contrast between kinetic weapons and the scalar/EMP systems actually used to down non-human craft: "Because the ET craft are completely electromagnetic — a kinetic weapon would not be so effective, a missile or a laser, but an electromagnetic pulse or scalar weapon stuns them and they'll come down." Kinetic systems thus occupy a different niche within the classified weapons architecture — effective against fixed terrestrial targets but not against maneuvering electromagnetic craft.
