Recorded evidence of Freddie
A circulating copy of the front-view photograph of the small being "Freddie", said by Jonathan Reed to have been taken during his home examination in Seattle in October 1996. 35 mm slide film, attributed to Reed. Fair use.
Recorded evidence of Freddie is the set of 35-millimetre slide photographs, video recordings and a sound recording that Jonathan Reed says he made in October 1996 of the small, humanoid non-human intelligent being he called "Freddie", first at the site of the Jonathan Reed forest incident near Snoqualmie Pass and then at his home in Seattle, Washington. It runs to four strands: a hand-held eight-millimetre forest video said to show the being on the forest floor beside the levitating black obelisk; the home video, also circulated as the examination video of Freddie, a continuous run of about 8 minutes 37 seconds in which a gloved hand handles the body amid crumpled Mylar foil; the head photographs, in front, side and rear views and in eye close-ups; and a short recording Reed says is the being's scream as he opened the chest freezer in which he kept it.
The material first reached a wide public on 11 November 1998, when Art Bell scanned the Kodak originals himself on his Coast to Coast AM broadcast, excerpts of the forest video's audio airing the same month; the photographs and video were then shown at UFO conferences, reproduced in Reed's 2000 book LINK: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey (co-authored with Robert Raith) and presented by Jaime Maussan in Mexico, and the freezer recording was played on Coast to Coast AM on 16 March 2001. Together with the Photographs of the obelisk taken on the same rolls, it forms part of the documentary evidence of non-human intelligent beings offered for the Reed case, the front-view face photograph being the image most often reproduced. Reed's account is the only account of how the material was made.
Several accounts of its provenance are in circulation. The investigators of the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group, now the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, found no independent witness to the filming, hold the case a hoax created by a group of friends and name Reed's legal identity as Rutter, so that on their reading Reed took part in making the material; the Syfy series Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files (2010) reproduced both the photographs and the forest footage with a fabricated figure placed in the woods under controlled lighting; and a commenter who said she was a former associate of Reed's alleged that the being is a papier-mâché doll. The debunking site UFO Watchdog reported both that the slide film Reed said he used was not manufactured until after October 1996, which, if correct, means the photographs cannot have been exposed when he says he made them, and that the Jeep he says he drove to the forest site was not in his possession until 17 April 1997, more than eighteen months after the alleged encounter — a finding the Seattle group repeats. The custody carries its own circumstances: Reed says the original recording was longer and that individuals who presented themselves as MUFON investigators took much of it and some of the photographs and never returned them, he says a viewer pointed out to him only years later that the being appears to blink on the tape, and when a listener asked the 28 December 1998 broadcast why the doctor had "just happened" to record the scream as he opened the freezer, Reed's collaborator Raith answered that it was made on a later visit rather than the first. Against these readings, Bell's physical handling of the Kodak originals was offered as proof that the photographs were not computer-generated, and the apparent blinking and the red-eye reflection in the close-ups are read by others as the mark of a living subject rather than a prop.

The forest video is the hand-held recording that Reed says he made on 15 October 1996 at the site of the Jonathan Reed forest incident, the footage offered as showing the being at the encounter site itself, lying on the forest floor beside the obelisk, and Reed's initial approach to the spot where he found the remains of his dog Suzy.[citation needed]
Description of the forest footage
Reed stated he filmed approximately ten to fifteen minutes of video at the incident site, capturing footage of the being lying motionless on the forest floor. Reed described the handheld recording as jerky and unstable, made while running through the woods in a state of distress; he confirmed it was secured to a ladder with duct tape during portions filmed at closer range showing the being's wound. The recording captured audio of the being's breathing, which Art Bell played during the November 1998 broadcasts; Bell identified it on air as coming from "the wood scene" with the breathing, and Robert Raith said the footage ran "about six minutes in each segment".
Obelisk footage
One of the still photographs taken by Reed at the encounter site, showing the obelisk levitating among vegetation in the forest near Snoqualmie Pass. Fair use.
The same recording session captured the obelisk at the scene before it reactivated and disappeared. Reed described the obelisk as a black object levitating above the ground, emitting a low, harmonic hum and making the air beneath it feel thick and dense. Art Bell, who personally scanned the still photographs of the obelisk sent by Reed and verified they were raw photographic prints rather than digital fabrications, described the obelisk as "a black diamond-shaped six-sided object, almost diamond-shaped... pseudo-diamond-shaped... kind of a marquis diamond laying on its side," measuring approximately two and a half by three feet tall, four by four-and-a-half feet wide, and nine to nine-and-a-half feet long, hovering in midair.
Reed stated the obelisk was located approximately 75 to 100 feet from where the being fell. When he passed a stick beneath it to confirm nothing was supporting it from below, the stick met resistance like "going into molasses" as it passed under the object. Two still photographs of the obelisk were presented alongside the video footage; Bell noted that the photographs were so clear and detailed that some viewers rejected them as too good to be real — an inverse of the typical skeptical objection to blurry UAP imagery.
Reed described noticing that the camera experienced increasing distortion the closer he brought it to the black obelisk, and compensated by backing away to capture a more stable image: "As I filmed the video, I noticed that it would distort the closer that I got to the black obelisk... And I realized that the farther away I got, the less distortion would happen. So I ran back as far as I could and tried to record something."
Reed came to believe the obelisk was not a spacecraft — he considered it too small to have carried the being — but rather "a doorway, a portal," anchored simultaneously in two locations, functioning as the target point for dimensional transit. Reed further proposed that the Link bracelet recovered at the scene had served as a wrist-worn interface connecting the being to the obelisk and to a remote controller, citing as evidence the fact that the bracelet was found approximately where it would have landed if thrown from the being's wrist during the encounter.
Camera
The camera used was a Nikon eight-millimeter video camera — Reed described it as "Nikon straight eight... about seven years old" at the time of the 2000 UFO Congress presentation. The camera featured a unidirectional microphone extending from the top of the unit, which Reed cited as an explanation for the clarity of audio recorded during the hyperventilating, distressed run through the forest: "The microphone on this Nikon eight millimeter video camera is a unidirectional microphone sticking out of the top... The viewfinder is on the top." A television professional in the UFO Congress 2000 audience, Russell Callan of UFO Magazine (UK), observed that despite the visible hyperventilation and running evident in the footage, "you did very well to keep the camera steady" during portions of the film.
Filming at the site
Reed spent approximately three hours on the scene before returning to his vehicle. He recounted that, having decided he had to leave the site to survive, he remembered his cameras and resolved to document the scene: "Now, exuberant about the prospects of bringing proof of this nightmare and perhaps restoring my own sanity, I grabbed my camera from the pack, turning it on, and then ran as fast as I could back to the top of the ridge... I began breathing so hard that I could almost feel myself starting to lose consciousness." Reed described the filming itself as driven by a moment of adrenaline-fueled logic overriding panic: "I didn't want to think about what had happened, what had happened with my dog, what had happened with this creature. I wanted to just be healthy. I wanted to just come out of this nightmare... I was running on pure adrenaline." After completing the video, Reed returned to his backpack, removed his 35-millimeter camera, and took still photographs of the scene before leaving.
Home capture in October 1996
According to Reed, a former developmental psychologist turned contactee, the being was incapacitated during the forest incident in the Cascade Mountains and revived at his home over the following days. He says he carried it into the house, put it in his rec room and videotaped it, and elsewhere places the filming on his garage floor, adding that he filmed it believing it dead. The close-up photographs of the being's head come from this home session rather than from the forest footage taken at the incident site.
Reed stated that all photographs of Freddie were taken prior to widespread digital photography, on 35mm slide film loaded into a Nikon camera, with approximately four rolls exposed during the incident and its immediate aftermath documenting both the being and the obelisk artifact. Among the other items Reed says he brought from the forest site is the link bracelet, and his account of the days at his home includes a visit by agents of the covert organization he calls The School, among them Hobart (The School).
Reviving in the garage
According to Reed, after returning from the forest incident he placed the being's body in a chest freezer at his home. On approximately the third day, Reed had arranged for a professor he knew from the University of Washington to come and examine the body, and he set up a table and lights in his garage for the visit. The professor cancelled. When Reed went back to the garage to put the table and lights away, he heard a sound from inside the freezer; he opened the lid and found the being moving, having displaced the thermal blanket covering it and shifting an arm. Reed stated he "slammed the door of the freezer and ran" into his house. He subsequently described the being as screaming when he opened the freezer. The home video was recorded over the days that followed, while Reed kept the being at his home.
Reed has said he put the being in the freezer, reasoning that a freezer would preserve what he believed to be a corpse, and described the unit as a large chest freezer in his garage — "a crypt freezer, like a coffin." He recounted: "I didn't want to bring it in the house. I didn't want to look at it."
In a later retelling on Art Bell's Dark Matter radio program, Reed gave additional detail: he had taken out a folding table and a light in the garage specifically for the anticipated visit, and when the professor cancelled he was in the process of "putting away the table, the folding table, and the light" when he heard the scratching sound from inside the freezer. Reed said that when he opened the freezer the being had unwound itself from the thermal blanket, stuck its head out, and begun screaming at him; on a later visit he found it had returned to the freezer of its own accord and was making "chirpy, squeaky sounds kind of almost like a bird or a dolphin sound."
Custody of the original
Reed said the original recording was longer and that most of it was among the material taken by the individuals who had presented themselves as MUFON investigators; in the case's shadow government reading, agents who located him through the very channel to which he had reported the encounter.[citation needed] Reed has also said that he handed over some of his photographs and some of the videotape to these people, who were not MUFON members and never returned the evidence.
The photographs
Face photograph
The photograph of Freddie's face is the most widely reproduced image from the Reed case, showing the head of a small humanoid figure with large dark oval eyes approximately two inches across, a small mouth, no visible nose cartilage, and no visible hair or ears — consistent with Reed's verbal descriptions of the being in interviews. Reed stated the being was photographed while stored in a chest freezer at his home in Seattle in the days following the forest encounter. Visible red material on the being appeared to be blood following Reed's strike with a tree branch during the forest incident; Reed described the skull as having been breached, stating: "from the photograph of the injury, the skull was breached."

A photograph showing the lateral profile of Freddie's head, including the ear-canal region. Reed stated that an additional side-view photograph of the being's head, released after the initial 1998 disclosures, showed the ear canal in detail.

Close-up photographs of Freddie's eyes, with one image reportedly showing Reed using his hand to hold the eyelid open. Retinal reflectivity visible in these close-ups has been cited as alleged evidence the being was a living creature rather than a fabricated prop, on the argument that a model or mask would not produce the same red-eye effect visible in the images. The "OMG Alien Footage" YouTube compilation presented the eye analysis as one of several arguments for authenticity. Red-eye retinal reflectivity visible in the eye close-ups has likewise been offered as alleged evidence of a living subject rather than a prop. The image of the eye held open by Reed's hand also circulates as a still from the sixth shot of the home video.
Film negative and film stock
An image of an original 35mm film negative, presented as alleged evidence the photographs predated digital manipulation capabilities. Bell emphasized during the 1998 broadcast that the photographs were physical Kodak 35mm originals rather than digital files: "I scanned these photographs, Kodak 35 millimeter photographs, myself." On a 2013 Dark Matter broadcast, Reed stated the photographs were taken "prior to digital photography" using "35 millimeter slide film." The debunking site UFO Watchdog reported that the slide film Reed said he used was not manufactured by Kodak until after October 1996, a point it attributes to Tony Edwards of the company's Product Information Department, a dating discrepancy that would affect every photograph in the set; the Seattle group's report puts the stock's first manufacture in 1997, after the alleged incident date.
Obelisk photographs

Photographs of the obelisk
Photographs of the obelisk artifact were taken on the same rolls of film. Reed stated on a 2013 broadcast that the obelisk photographs in their original physical form were unusually clear, and that later versions circulated online appeared lower-resolution by comparison.

The 1998 broadcast described "approximately six 35mm photographs with three posted publicly," and additional images surfaced on Reed's website in subsequent years.

Description
The surviving, circulating footage is a single continuous run of about eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds, preserved in a best-quality digital copy of roughly 640 by 480 pixels, and is made up of eight distinct camera shots separated by hard cuts. The recording is low-resolution, hand-held video shot on a Nikon eight-millimetre camcorder; because its viewfinder was a one-inch black-and-white display, Reed said he did not notice during filming that the being appeared to move, a detail third-party viewers pointed out to him years later. The footage carries no spoken narration; its only audio is heavy breathing, with none of the spoken communication-session material that belongs to the separate audio recording.
Throughout the run the subject is the small, dark — near-black — smooth, hairless humanoid form Reed called Freddie, lying amid crumpled gold-and-silver Mylar "space-blanket" foil, its large domed cranium the most prominent feature; a gloved hand, Reed's, repeatedly enters the frame to manipulate it.
The run opens, in a first shot of about three and a quarter minutes, on a full-length, body-sized bundle loosely wrapped in gold Mylar on a flat surface, a dark band cinched across its middle; the camera surveys it from the side and above, and at roughly the fifty-second mark a long thin rod or pointer is laid alongside and used to prod the bundle, after which the camera pushes in, the foil is opened, and a smooth dark rounded mass — the head and torso — fills the frame and is explored slowly from several angles. A hard cut brings a second shot of about fifty seconds: a close study of a dark, smooth, hairless domed head in profile, into which Reed's gloved hand enters to touch and steady the head and the area around the face and eye against the foil. A brief third shot of about sixteen seconds runs the hand along the being's dark back, a faint surface texture or ridging visible, before re-establishing the head and body on the foil, and a fuller side-and-rear view of about fourteen seconds — the fourth shot — gives the clearest overall silhouette: a large domed head, a narrow neck, and sloping shoulders and upper back against the gold foil.
An extended profile study of about a minute and a quarter — the fifth shot — is the most face-legible passage: a hand reaches in partway through, and the front of the head resolves into a face, a bulbous cranium tapering to a small facial area, with a bright highlight consistent with an eye. In the sixth shot, of about fifty-four seconds, Reed's gloved hand works at the front of the head, poking and prying and appearing to hold open a facial feature; this is the passage from which the widely circulated still of the being's eye being held open by a hand is taken. The head is then shown from another angle on a more crumpled tan-and-foil surface in a seventh shot of about thirty-eight seconds, the hand lifting it, pointing at it, and turning it, with a second dark mass partly visible at the edge of the frame, before the recording closes, in an eighth shot of about a minute and eight seconds, on very close, dark views of the black body and head deep in the crumpled gold-foil nest, the dark mass filling the centre of the frame, consistent with the body being re-covered as the footage ends.
Apparent blinking
The most-discussed feature of the footage is the apparent slow blinking of the being's eye and movement of its pupil during the examination. In a 2025 video essay, the YouTube channel Polarity said that close inspection of the original footage appears to show the being's eyes blinking slowly — an observation that, if accurate, would indicate the being was alive when it was filmed, consistent with Reed's statement that "Freddie" survived the encounter and revived in his freezer: "if you actually go back to part one and look at the footage of Jonathan filming this entity on the floor of his garage, you actually see it blinking slowly. So he actually realized after the fact when he thought this thing was dead, it wasn't." On the We Are Not Alone podcast it was argued that the visible blinking and pupil movement would rule out a fabricated prop, and that an animatronic detailed enough to reproduce them would have been prohibitively expensive for a private hoaxer. A recurring point among those who read the footage as staged, by contrast, is that the being's head appears disconnected or abnormally stiff during the examination, and that Reed can be seen inserting a finger into the being's eye during filming — behavior they consider inconsistent with genuine care for a living subject.
Reed stated that it was only years after the footage was made that he was informed by a reviewer that the being appeared to blink its eyes and move its facial muscles in the video — details he said he had not noticed while filming because his attention had been fixed on keeping the being from attacking him: "I wasn't the one who pointed out that he was moving and his eyes were moving. Somebody else who saw the video actually pointed that out to me years later."

The audio recording is a short sound recording that, according to Jonathan Reed, captures the vocalization made by the small non-human intelligent being he called "Freddie" as he opened the chest freezer in which he was keeping it at his home near Seattle, Washington. Reed said he made the recording on a deliberate return to the freezer some days after the Jonathan Reed forest incident near Snoqualmie Pass in October 1996, by which time the being he had believed dead had, in his account, revived; he played it on Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell on March 16, 2001.
Because the recording captures sound alone, it cannot by itself establish what produced the sound; its identification as the being's voice, and the account of when and how it was made, rest entirely on Reed's testimony, and the original tape has not been made available for independent acoustic analysis.[citation needed] The recording belongs to a case that the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group holds to be a hoax, and Reed retold the account on broadcasts from 1998 to 2013, presenting it as one strand of a larger body of photographic, video, and physical evidence.
The scream recording
According to Reed, some days after the forest incident the being he believed dead revived and began producing vocalizations. Reed subsequently made an audio recording by opening the freezer and capturing the resulting sound, which he described as a scream. Reed stated: "This is opening the freezer, him screaming, and closing the freezer."
On Coast to Coast AM on April 20, 2000 — one of his earliest broadcasts on the subject — Reed described the moment of the being's revival in detail: "Without thinking, I just opened the top of the freezer and to my surprise, my creature sat up and looked right at me and let out a scream that basically forced me back away from the freezer." He emphasized that the recording had been made not at that first moment of revival but on a later, deliberate return to the freezer: "This was not the time that I recorded it... later on I went back in and actually recorded the sound of him screaming when I opened the freezer."
The scream was described as physically forceful. Reed recounted that the being "sat up out of the end of the thermal blanket and screamed at me in such a way that it... forced my chest back against the wall," and, on a 2013 Dark Matter broadcast, that the sound was "so intense, it was so powerful that it felt like it was pushing against your chest, pushing you away," as though it were a defensive reaction.
Broadcast and response
The recording was played on Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell on March 16, 2001, during a lengthy interview. Bell's on-air reaction — "Oh my God, you're gonna live to a good old age. That would have done me in" — reflected his stated response to hearing the sound. Reed responded: "Well, it done me in too, the first time around. I didn't go back out there for a long time, until Gary came over. And then we didn't know what to do." Bell additionally noted that the being was alive and revived inside the freezer "where it's been for days at what? Probably near zero temperatures."
Reed's 2000 book LINK: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey, co-authored with Robert Raith, also covers the period at his home in which the home video and the photographs were made.[citation needed] Reed also stated that he had separately recorded the scream to audio tape and that the being produced this scream on multiple occasions when the freezer was opened.
Recorded communication sessions
Audio Excerpt 2 (2:55–3:58): the being's vocalizations become increasingly agitated.
Audio Excerpt 3 (3:58–5:35): Reed describes the alleged telepathic contact — "Hurts my head," "It hurts," "Go back."
Audio Excerpt 4 ("Exodus", 5:35–6:22): Reed narrates his movements as he slowly backs away.
In addition to the freezer scream recording, a series of four audio excerpts document Reed's deliberate attempts at communication with the being after it had emerged from the freezer and begun to calm. An introductory narration on the recording states: "He took a recording device out to his garage. Opened the freezer, allowed the creature to come out, and then he made attempts to communicate to the creature, to give it water, to offer it food, and to basically try to keep it calm."
In the first excerpt, labeled "Creature Throws Cup," Reed can be heard speaking in a calm, reassuring tone: "Okay. Move. No one is going to hurt you. Anymore. I won't hurt you anymore." What Reed presented as the being's vocalizations — high-pitched chirps and screeches — are audible throughout. The being reportedly threw a cup during this session, prompting Reed to repeat "no more."
The second excerpt, "Creature Gets Upset," contains no discernible human speech — only the being's vocalizations of increasing agitation.
In the third excerpt, "Communication Hurts," Reed can be heard saying: "I don't know what this means. Hurts my head. It hurts. Go back." The being's vocalizations occur concurrently with Reed's speech, consistent with his later accounts of simultaneous vocal and telepathic communication producing physical discomfort.
The fourth excerpt, labeled "Exodus," captures Reed narrating his movements as he backs away from the being: "Okay, it's alright, I'm gonna go. Alright, I turn it off. Alright, I won't. I'm just going to walk over here."
Behavioral progression
Reed described the being's behavioral progression during the days following the first freezer scream. After the initial revival and screaming episode, its vocalizations shifted: it "at least no longer screamed" at him and "would now make little chirpy, squeaky sounds," and Reed talked to it as he would a dog or a member of his family in order to keep it calm. By around the ninth day the being had begun voluntarily exiting the freezer on its own, sitting in front of the unit and rocking back and forth in a fluid motion while making eye contact with Reed: "It actually would get out of the freezer on its own, sit in front of the freezer, kind of rock back and forth in a very fluid motion... and look at me with these big two inch oval eyes... It started to communicate through telepathy." This progression — from screaming at freezer openings to voluntary emergence and telepathic communication — frames the audio recording as capturing only the earliest phase of the being's revival, before what Reed described as a sustained relationship with the being developed.
Reed cited the scream's force, and the being's sitting upright when the freezer was opened, as evidence of its ongoing vitality throughout the period of freezer storage; this raised the question whether the being had been genuinely unconscious, temporarily suspended in a state of physiological dormancy, or deliberately feigning incapacitation.[citation needed]
Provenance and authenticity of the audio
Questions raised publicly about the provenance of the audio recording centered on why Reed would have had a tape recorder active when opening the freezer. The December 28, 1998 broadcast addressed this directly: a listener submitted the question "how is it that the doctor just happened to record the scream of the alien when opening the freezer — why was he carrying a tape recorder turned on when opening the freezer?" Reed's collaborator Raith answered: "That was not the first time that I had gone out to the freezer; this was much later when I made that recording." This was offered to clarify that the recording was a deliberate documentation effort made on a return visit, not an accidental capture at the moment of first revival.
The same December 1998 broadcast addressed the cameras Reed had used: asked whether he had a Nikon, Raith described the unit as "an eight millimeter straight eight, but it is made by Nikon" — which Bell noted few realized Nikon had manufactured — adding that it was "an older machine," and that the still camera was an older 35-millimeter Nikon. Reed stated that, in addition to the audio, he had photographed and videotaped the being at his home and retained the recording: "I actually took pictures of it. I took video of it, and I do have that recording."
As an audio-only artifact, the recording is inherently limited as evidence: it carries no image, so it cannot show what produced the sound, and whether the captured scream issued from a non-human source rests wholly on Reed's account of the circumstances under which it was made. A reading common among those who treat the Reed case as a fabricated hoax holds that the scream is an ordinary or manufactured sound presented within that account — the recording restating Reed's claim rather than independently testing it.[citation needed] A common reply among those who treat the case as authentic is that the sound's reported physical force, which Reed said pressed against his chest and to which Bell reacted on air, and the consistency of Reed's retelling across broadcasts from 1998 to 2013, are difficult to square with fabrication, and that the recording is one strand of a multi-format record that also includes the home video, the photographs of Freddie, and the recovered Link bracelet.
Surfacing and circulation
The material first reached a wide public in November 1998, when Raith contacted Coast to Coast AM and Art Bell aired excerpts and posted associated stills; Bell scanned the original Kodak 35 mm photographs himself and broadcast them through his website's studio camera, telling listeners he was posting them "in order that you might know for sure that I am not just dealing with computer generated images." Bell held the physical Kodak originals up to the studio camera and personally scanned them for online display, presenting the physical handling as alleged certification against digital manipulation: "These are original Kodak photograph of an alien encounter." The broadcast described approximately six 35mm photographs in the released set, with three posted publicly at that time and additional images noted in possession, and Reed continued releasing photographs to his website over subsequent years, the side-view ear-canal images among the later disclosures.
Reed showed the video at UFO conferences, including the International UFO Congress, and in presentations by Maussan in Mexico, and it is described in the 2000 book LINK: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey, which he co-authored with Raith. The face photograph was displayed at UFO conferences and included in the book. It was shown alongside the home video, the forest video, and the audio recording of Freddie during presentations by Maussan in Mexico, and broadcast in the Otro Rollo segment on the Reed case (26 June 2001), which was reportedly rebroadcast 14 times across 21 countries. Reed also presented the case internationally, travelling to 14 countries to show the evidence to private groups, with video material scheduled for broader public release in the period following his 2001 Coast to Coast AM interview. The image became the central visual element of the Reed case and remains in circulation in UFO documentary and discussion media. Reed was allegedly shot some days after first presenting the case in person at a UFO conference in March 1999. Reed's own spoken narration of the footage, delivered over the video at conference screenings, and the recorded communication sessions are separate items from the video itself, which carries only the breathing audio.
For the forest video, Robert Raith contacted Coast to Coast AM host Art Bell in November 1998, and Bell played excerpts of the audio portion of the videotape during the broadcasts, among the first pieces of documentary evidence Reed presented publicly. Photographs were posted to Bell's website (artbell.com); Bell said he scanned the Kodak 35 mm prints himself rather than producing computer-generated images, to establish their non-digital origin. Before the second broadcast Bell re-scanned the photographs at higher resolution: "I have re-scanned the photographs... photographs of the obelisk, photographs of the alien creature... The new scans are much higher resolution."
During the November 18, 1998 broadcast, Bell played a segment of audio extracted from the videotape live on air, describing it to listeners as: "Listen carefully, folks. You're going to hear a man in a dead flat panic." Reed confirmed after it aired: "Yes, it was" in response to Bell's identification of the audio as Reed's own voice hyperventilating in the forest.
By the December 28, 1998 broadcast, Bell — who had by then personally viewed the videotape — described it on air as showing "a lot of running, a lot of very hard breathing, somebody in the middle of a, well, I guess a panic attack," adding that "some of it was steady, most of it was running or moving" and that the footage of the obelisk and the being "all of it appears roughly as in the still photographs, and backs those up." The same broadcast confirmed the camera model as "an eight millimeter straight eight, but it is made by Nikon" — a detail Bell said generated listener confusion, since many were unaware Nikon had manufactured that type of camcorder. By the January 29, 1999 broadcast, Robert Raith described the video's impact on audiences, noting the visible "interference" during the forest passages and that "you do see the alien laying on the space blanket and it's a bluish gray color, at least from a distance," and said approximately 110 people had viewed the video at a San Diego screening on March 14.
The forest video was likewise screened at UFO conference presentations including the International UFO Congress (Laughlin, Nevada) and in presentations by Jaime Maussan, and referenced in the book LINK: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey (2000) by Reed and Robert Raith, in which an entire chapter, titled "LINK", is named for the Link bracelet recovered at the same scene. The photograph of Freddie's face comes from the home session rather than from the forest footage.
Examinations
Investigators at the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, formerly the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group, directed by Charlette LeFevre and Philip Lipson, examined the video and photograph and concluded the materials were fabricated, citing inconsistencies in the figure's appearance and the absence of any corroborating witness to the filming. They concluded the Reed case was a hoax, asserting that "Jonathan Reed" was a pseudonym for one Jonathan Rutter and that the alleged encounter near Snoqualmie Pass never took place. The group further held that Reed's real identity was John Bradley Rutter and that his account contained several factual impossibilities, among them that Rutter was allergic to animals and had never owned a dog, contradicting the central claim that his dog Suzy had been killed by the being, and separately noted that the slide film Reed said he had used for his photography was not manufactured until 1997, after the alleged October 1996 incident date.
Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files (Syfy, 2010) examined Reed's photographic evidence in its "Sasquatch Sprint/Alien Attacker" episode and concluded the imagery could be replicated using a fabricated prop head under controlled lighting conditions, and that the home video could be replicated using practical effects and props, a fabricated alien figure placed on a surface under controlled lighting. A reading common among those who accept the material as genuine holds that a reproduction shows only that such a figure can be made, not that this one was.[citation needed]
The same episode investigated the forest footage as part of its examination of the Reed case, concluding that the footage of the being could be reproduced using a prop figure placed in the woods under ordinary filming conditions. A YouTube review by the channel OMG Alien Footage examined both the original 1996 footage and the 2010 Fact or Faked recreation and concluded that the debunking was itself flawed, citing documentary evidence — including photographs of Reed's bullet wound scars (entry and exit), his University of Washington employment records from 1983 to 1996, and the deaths of two colleagues, Rodger Haggitt and Michael Wessels, allegedly preparing to release DNA analysis of the creature — as grounds for reopening the question: "I find it odd that people think anyone would give up a doctor's salary, collection of cars, girlfriend, dog, and life to get hospitalized, threatened, friends murdered, and have people ridicule you as a hoax for over 14 years."
The debunking site UFO Watchdog reported that the Jeep Reed claimed to have used for transportation to and from the forest was not in his possession until 17 April 1997 — over 18 months after the alleged incident date — having obtained the Lynwood Nissan bill of sale showing the vehicle had been purchased by Reed's former girlfriend. A separate investigation by the Seattle UFO-Paranormal Group, published through the Northwest Museum of Legends and Lore, reported the same finding regarding the Jeep's acquisition date. Reed, who says the agents who ransacked his home removed most of his supporting evidence and records, has not addressed either discrepancy directly in any recorded interview.[citation needed] Questions raised at the 2000 UFO Congress regarding the camera's audio quality — a television professional suggested it was anomalously clear given the microphone's position during running — were addressed by Reed's explanation of the camera's unidirectional microphone design, though the steadiness of some passages has been read, by those who regard the footage as staged, as difficult to reconcile with filming in extreme distress.
A commenter identifying herself as a former associate of Reed, whose messages were read aloud in a YouTube video, alleged that "Freddie is a doll made of papier-mâché" and that "Valerie did Freddie's videos with his Microsoft team." No evidence accompanies the comment.
Attorney Daniel Sheehan, in a discussion of disinformation within the UFO field, described the Reed case as an example of deliberate fabrication, recounting that one of his professional investigators "followed this guy around and finally caught him reporting to some friends of his how he was bullshitting everybody." Sheehan stated he informed John Mack, who subsequently "issued a statement discrediting the guy." No corroborating detail about this investigator, or about Mack's purported statement, has surfaced in the public record.[citation needed]
Maussan promoted the case, describing the supporting witness testimony — including that of Harold Chacon — as among the most extraordinary evidence he had encountered in the investigation of the phenomenon.
Tissue analysis
Biological analysis presented by Maussan reportedly linked the photographic and tissue evidence, claiming Freddie possessed 46 chromosomes — the same number as humans — with nine pairs resembling those of dolphin and sea tortoise, alongside nanotechnology devices found in the being's brain. The tissue analysis is attributed to Chacon in the Reed case. The tissue itself was said to have been examined by a University of Washington team that included pathologist Rodger Haggitt and research chemist Michael Wessels, both of whom died within months of each other in 2000 before any results were published — a coincidence read, by those who hold the case to be genuine, as a deliberate effort to suppress the findings.[citation needed] The independent investigator Daniel McEvoy said on the 16 March 2001 broadcast that he was given the names of four people directly involved in the tissue analysis — Harold Chacon, Reed, and the two University of Washington researchers — and that he interviewed the two researchers in April 2000.
