Ummo affair

The Ummo affair (also Ummo case or Ummite letters) is a decades-long series of letters in Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, purportedly from an extraterrestrial civilization called the Ummites, who claimed to have arrived on Earth in the 1950s in southeast France. The letters, numbering in the thousands, were sent to selected recipients across Europe and South America over several decades.

Background

The Ummite letters began arriving in the 1960s and continued for decades, addressed to private individuals, scientists, and small study groups primarily in Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal. The letters described the Ummites' home planet, their technology, their social structure, and their observations of Earth's civilizations. The case attracted a substantial network of researchers, particularly in southern Europe and Latin America.

Researchers

French researcher and engineer Jean-Pierre Petit wrote multiple books analyzing the case. Come Carpentier de Gourdon, a French-Indian exopolitics researcher, became acquainted with Petit and through him met another French engineer named Roger who compiled an encyclopedic analysis of the Ummite letters.

Scientific claims

Some technical claims in the Ummite letters have been independently confirmed by scientific advances occurring decades after the letters were written, while others remain unverified — a pattern that researchers cite as evidence against the hypothesis that the letters were a simple hoax.

The Ummite letters are one of several European contact cases involving purportedly extraterrestrial communications with selected civilians, a pattern documented by Timothy Good.
